    Great cover - great design

After much research, I decided to purchase the black leather cover for my iPad 2.
    Aesthetics:
+ look and feel of the leather is great
+ metal hing and magnet look great

    Functionality:
+ magnetic attachment is great - easy to remove and re-attach
+ soft liner is great against the screen
    - folds only in one direction (microfiber out)

Overall, I'd only remove less than one half of one star for it folding the the liner side out. Highly recommended if you need business black!

    Fantastic

The Smart Cover is a fairly standard concept, but when I had to choose, the black leather was best, because...

A: It isn't some ugly color.
    B: It is flexible
    C: Its kind of pretty.

However, my two problems with it, are...

A: The cover is easily scratched.
B: The inside becomes really dusty.

Overall, it's a good case, and thats why I'm typing on it now. :)

iPad 2 Black Leather Smart Cover

Brilliant accessory for your iPad as it makes it even more magical to use. The automatic lift to unlock feature is brilliant as you don't have to slide to unlock once you have lifted the cover flap. the auto align feature ensures that every time you attach the smart cover it fits perfectly. The leather material is both soft and smooth and the black cover goes very well with both black and white iPad's.

    Missing a back?

I love the magnetic attachment, works really well except this product is missing some sort of protection on the back side. Wish it had a back like a book jacket.

    Leather hinges and stretching

    • Written by from Livingston

It's really nice when brand new but over time, the leather that loops around the hinge will stretch. This will cause the cover become really loose and the stability is even worse when using it as a stand.

It's Not worth it. The synthetic cover should last longer but it doesn't feel as nice. I settled for a third party product. There's a lot of garbage out there but with some digging, you can find a superior case or cover that costs less.

    DO NOT BUY!

This case has proven to be pretty worthless. Not only does the magnetic strip constantly disconnect, but it has caused my iPad to fall over on a desk multiple times. One time it fell over and slipped off the desk cracking the glass in the corner. Do not buy as this cover will cause you more pain than you want.

    Works well,but overpriced

Works well AS A COVER (which it is). I think of mine as a nice screen cover so I don't need to apply a screen protector that blunts the beauty of the display. I like the way it turns the iPad on & off, and can prop the iPad at an angle. It's nice looking (black leather), but overpriced for what you get. No, I don't try to carry it by the cover, so it has never fallen off (it IS attached by magnets - what do you expect??) Since it is a cover & not a protective case, I did purchase a neoprene sleeve from another vendor into which I slip my iPad when I carry it around the building or protect it when in my briefcase. This combo keeps the iPad slim and doesn't interfer w/ the retina display, doesn't need to be removed to prevent heat build-up from the battery, but provides sufficient protection.

    Smart cover in camel colour

I brought the camel coloured smart cover for my ipad 2 in white, all looks good, and I am very happy with the functioning of the cover, however, it does tend to leave marks on the screen in the form of lines, as the cover has 3 rigid lines running across it, these lines are quite stubborn to remove, so the next solution after taking it back to apple was to purchase a very tiny spray bottle of cleaning solution to rid the screen of these lines, after reading the product information of this chemical it did not sound to healthy to use in the same room as me! .
However, it did work, and at a price of £14.95.

Some of the weirdest reviews I have ever read....Good cover

    • Written by from ANN ARBOR

The reviews here are some of the weirdest I have ever used, ranging from "amazing" to "horrible"...
This is a cover that is what it is -- it protects the FRONT SCREEN of the iPad, and is designed to do nothing else. It does not protect the iPad from user-drops. It does not protect the iPad if you grab it from the cover without supporting the iPad. It does not cause that damage...YOU cause that damage when you do not pay attention to what you are doing.
Never advertised as an iPad protector, but simply a front screen cover. They look stylish, they work well on all the current new iPads (even though some here say they don't -- they work exactly the same on the new iPad as they do the iPad2...I administer 20 iPads in my office, and not one person has complained about the cover -- even though many remove it and purchase their own full-protection covers.
Decent cover. Does what it is supposed to do. Ignore all the complaints herein.

Great cover, complaints seem to be user error.

I've used the (Red) Leather and Orange Polyeurethane "rev1" covers on the iPad2, and the newer "rev 2" Grey Polyeurethane, and Black Leather on the iPad3. I noticed that the "rev 2" covers have a nicer feel (they silently updated them a few months ago. I believe the "rev1" models start with "MC" as the part number, and the "rev2" start with "MD"). The inside of the "rev2" is more suede-like, probably due to thicker microfiber to keep dirt off the screen. I also noticed the "rev 2" leather seems to be more resistant to scratches and cosmetic damage which used to be my primary complaint with the Red leather cover.

That said, I can see people either loving or hating this cover. Luckily you can get a full refund if you dislike it. The love/hate primarily depends on how you intend to use (and treat) your $500+ glass tablet. I personally don't need to cover the back since I'm always mindful as to where I set it down. I certainly never hold my iPad by the Smart Cover or without a firm grip on the tablet itself so I don't need an "Otterbox" (which ironically isn't waterproof). I'm confused by those who say this was "hard to install". You literally just place the smart cover on the glass as if it were in the "closed" position, and let go. The magnetic hinge does the rest. You can remove it by using a bit of force to pull the cover away from the iPad when in the "open" position. I do enjoy the "Smart" aspect of this cover, in that automtically turns the screen off when closed and turns it on when open.

If you do want to protect the back from scratches, a "happy medium" would be to add one of the "Smart cover compatible" back covers by InCase or Belkin, or for a classier look, add a matching leather "Zagg Skin" to the back.

If you like to keep the aesthetics "clean" and don't have kids or a tedency to drop things, I highly recommend this case. If you don't want to have to worry about where you set it down, then get a massive "Otterbox" case and toss at will! However, I equate that to wrapping your nice couch in plastic like grandma used to do. I give it 4 stars only because it's over-priced, but that isn't really unexpected from an Apple accessory.

    Best iPad Case

I really enjoy the smart cover for my white iPad. I chose black because it hides scratches and kinks very well. It is extremely light, and easy to take off, unlike my brothers case which takes a good 3-4 minutes. The magnetic feature is fantastic. When opening the cover, my iPad wakes up , when the iPad is turned on, and I log in instantly. Even though it's not necessary I think it's a great bonus of owning the cover. My iPad does not have any scratches on it, and I've owned it for about six months now. Laying the iPad on the cover, and leaving the back bare in a safe spot will do the job just fine. I bring it to the gym a lot and its very portable and not a hassle. The case still looks, new. The leather has not peeled on the sides or torn. The inside cloth does help keep the screen a bit clean of smudges. Overall good product form Apple. It's portable, but not durable. So if you bring it to work or have lots of kids using it, I would not recommend it, but for the occasional book or web browsing on the sofa, it's excellent.

I've had this iPad cover since I got my iPad3 when it came out, and I haven't had any complaints about it. Some of the other reviews here cited the magnets being not strong enough and the iPad falling and dropping onto the floor. There is a simple solution to this: don't hold the iPad by the case! You need to keep your paws on your iPad whenever possible. The case looks great and works great for what it is meant to do.

    Honestly?

If you want my honest opinion, here it is. This cover does what I expect it to, and does it extremely well.

I am typing this review on my iPad using the cover to prop it in the right angle. It holds my iPad at an amazing angle to type with. The other "movie" angle holds my iPad steady to be able to watch movies while in front of me.

I chose the black leather because I am an entertainment technician (video, lighting, sound, etc.) and it looks extremely professional, the microfiber side keeps fingerprints in three rows which are easily eliminated with one swipe of the cover while detached, it prevents my screen from scratching while transporting (which happens to me a lot).

The magnets are extremely strong and I can actually hold my iPad by the cover ( DON'T TRY THIS). I still reccomend holding the iPad by the iPad itself.

Yes, it only protects the screen, but that is what it was designed for, to be thin, lightweight, and to protect only the screen.

Overall, this cover works exactly how I expected it to (I watch the keynotes) and that is all that I could ask for.

Poor design in this Apple product

    • Written by from Ashtabula

44 of 54 people found this useful

I expected much more from a product designed by Apple. The magnet is difficult to use and not very effective at keeping the cover in place. The cover provides very limited protection for the glass face of the iPad and provides no protection for the metal case, and that limited protection only occurs when the cover sometimes stays in place. The Magnet is not effective in holding the cover in place. It is easily displaced while being transported in a backpack or briefcase and flops open when carried by hand i.e it is not very good at protecting an expensive devise that was meant to be portable. When folded, the cover does not reliably hold the iPad in viewing position(s) especially on a smooth surfaces e.g glass top table. It does work well at picking up loose paper clips and assorted other metallic items and holding them in place. A quick search finds other less expensive products that provide much more protection and better options for holding the iPad in various viewing positions.

Everyone, who's a critic, pay attention...leather scratches and marts, just like anything else that is leather...ev own a pair of leather shoes. Cost, surprise, leather costs more than poly...again, the same show analogy; leather costs more than other materials...why, because it's leather genius's...get over it.

This is a great cover, the magnets work very well, and it functions as designed. If money is an issue, then yes, go with poly, but if you want leather and understand that leather stains and scratches, just as it should, then spend the extra money.

Apple needs to spend some R&D on better welding processes before they charge extra for leather. The front and back materials on mine started separating after only three months of modest use. I wish I had checked others' comments before buying.

    Slippery

I previously had an original iPad with Apple's standard cover and was very satisfied with it. Maybe it spoiled me.

With this cover, coupled with the tapered edge and smooth back of the iPad it has slipped out of my hands many times in the two weeks I have owned it. My attempts to catch it often fail and down goes the iPad and... up goes my heart rate.
Some percentage of the time, the magnetic hinge (which is a very cool, self centering design will fail while attempting to catch it)

This has proven to me that the iPad is a very rugged animal indeed but I can't afford to keep testing it.

I like the snap-on feature and the way it looks...

The Black Leather Smart Cover is the only way to go! I find it is a rather classy look. I have never had any problems with the magnet dis-engaging, as I do not pick up my iPad up, by using the Smart Cover. Match the the Black Leather Smart Cover with the proper cover, for the
back of the back of the iPad, and it is all good! I like the look and feel of the leather, versus the
poly. Black Leather is the only way to go (just my opinion).
