    This product needs a recall

    • Written by from Bellevue

Have treated my charger very carefully. Have not wrapped it too tight and have always avoided putting stress on either end of it. It's now failing at the power supply end around the grommet. My previous Macbook chargers (which are all several years older) have had no issues with the same degree of care given them. This is a shoddy product. Will not be buying an air again because of this.

Long-term excellent durable if treated a certain way

This goes against the grain of reviews, but here's my experience. I have had three Apple white power bricks, each outlasting the laptop it came with (the weren't all 45W Magsafe – the first was the co-axial plug-in type with a white iBook, the second a 60W Magsafe with a Macbook and the current one a 45W Magsafe with an Air). I travel several days a week. I'd estimate I coil and uncoil the wire at least 10 times a week, several hundred or a thousand times a year, several thousand times in the time I've had the adapters.
But I always make sure I'm not allowing the wire to become twisted or strained. Where it emerges from the brick itself, I let it turn very gently through 90 degrees and then start wrapping the wire around the folding plastic 'ears', gently on the first lap and tightly thereafter. With each turn, I give the cable a twist with my thumb and forefinger to counteract the natural opposite twist it would otherwise get. And as I uncoil it I do the opposite. It doesn't take any time. Apple should put this in the instructions. It's the same way any sailor or trucker would coil up a rope, or gardener coil a hose, to stop it twisting and getting knotted and strained.

I must have got a fluke

    • Written by from Sydney

I bought my MacBook Air 11" in early 2012, and have the same power cord for that entire time. It has never failed me, never frayed, never broken.

Only recently did I drop my computer while it was plugged in, and the magnetic part of it snapped off when it hit the floor. Even though that happened, it still charges, as I can stick it back together, the magnetic part just comes off fairly easily now.

I'm really not sure why everyone has given it such terrible reviews. I'm not a very careful person, and I have dropped and swung and roughly handled this charger since the day I got it. It's been to uni, on planes, on the regular drive to my dad's house shoved in my overnight bag, and it's still as fine as it was the day I got it. It's even survived the occasional nibble from my pet cat.

Perhaps I got a random good one! Only complaint I have is the price. Really ridiculous. But considering how long mine has lasted in comparison to other people's, I would say the price is worth it. Hopefully I get lucky again!

    Seriously???

    • Written by from Leighton Buzzard

I am now at the point where I have to buy the fourth charger for this Macbook air which is not even 3 years old.
The first one died within 3 months and was replaced under warranty, the second one died 18 months later and the third now needs replacing after less than 10 months of use.

How can you justify such a badly designed product at such a high price?
I was considering buying another Macbook Air for my son, I am now seriously reconsidering.

    This charger is pathetic.

    Insulation on wire disintegrating

    • Written by from Mill Valley

Besides the outrageous price, I cannot believe the insulation on the cord disintegrated...first a small hole (covered with electrical tape), then a few days later, chunks opening up on both sides of the tape. I am ultra careful with my precious Air; am unaware that I have ever damaged the cord. This is NOT what I expect o an Apple product!! I've never had this happen on anything else that wasn't smashed or otherwise damaged.

    Needs Revamp Big-time

    • Written by from Singapore

This is probably the worst apple product I've come across. I'm sorry but it is. Failed for the third time, First time replaced during warranty second time replaced few months ago and cost me in full as out of warranty ( not using apple care hence only 1 year). This is the third time already and I'm thoroughly disappointed. I've never used the charger for anything but for my MBA11" and yet it failed 3 times within 2 years of laptop. The price for the charger is ridiculous with this error rate :(

Very poor design and too expensive!

    • Written by from Costa Mesa

The thin cord has frayed near the power supply and made the unit non-functional for the second time in the past three years. Very poor design! I am tired of spending $80 + tax to replace it which is an outrageous price! Make me rethink my next laptop purchase!

    What's up with the cables?!?!

    • Written by from Orlando

I love my MacBook Air... I am an Apple junkie... We all have iPhones here at home... we have an iPad and iPods... but these power cables are just not up to par with Apple's quality... Apple products are pricy, we buy them because we love Apple... but I have spent so much money replacing cables that I'm starting to loose that love... Please Apple, my second cable is fraying already!!!... And I have to pay $80 yet again!!!... I don't need the whole thing, just the cable, but I was told that they don't sell just the cable, so I have to buy the whole thing again!!!... My youngest son is going to start online schooling and I was looking into giving him my Air and buying myself a Pro, but I don't think want to invest so much on a laptop when I have to continue buying replacement cables at such a high price... Thank you for your wonderful products, but your cables are really bad!!!

    3 years is plenty

    • Written by from Epsom

Just had to replace my 3 year old unit that's travelled around the world several times, been used in the most unusual conditions. I can't count how many times the mag-safe feature has saved my MBA from flying off a desk, flight case, lap by popping off when yanked. In fact, I'd say those yanking out moments are where the cable gets the damage from. I'd rather replace that than the laptop.

Those people complaining about 1 year lifespan - what the heck are you doing to it?!?!?!?

The only reason I'm not giving it 5* is because the cables are a bit bent awkwardly out of the box. Yeah, stupid reason, but I like my cables coiled nice.

    • Written by from Medford

As a college student I bought a mac thinking it would be a good investment, and the computer itself has been....but having to spend 80 dollars on my non existent budget is outrageous! I am considering going back to a non apple laptop just so I can save money in the long run.

    ...Seriously?

    • Written by from Calgary

I got my MacBook Air in December of 2013, and just 7 months later the charger is busted. Wiggling the cord around to get it into the right position has now failed, so I come to find a new one, and what do I see? 80 bucks for a new one? This is so ridiculous. I've gone through 3 charge cables for my iPod 5 over the past 2 years as well. The quality is terrible.

    bad product

    • Written by from cold spring

80 bucks is TOO much for a new one, specially that we need to buy a new one every while. It supposed to be more efficient, and that's the deference when i buy it from Apple store and other store.

    Bad charger

    • Written by from Edison

I bought my Macbook Air 11'' couple of months ago, and my charger has already started to fall apart. I have used Windows laptops and I never faced adapter problems with them. My Macbook works fine, but the charger is falling apart and it is costly.

    Please recall this adapter!

    • Written by from virginia beach

This adapter pulls itself out with the slightest pressure up or down. It will, however stay secure when attempting to pull straight out. If placed on a computer lap tray with just enough material of some kind wedged underneath the connector so it is stable, it is less likely to disconnect. At this price, I shouldn't have to jerry-rig apple's design flaw. It's only a bandaid, but I hope this helps some of you.
