We have four chargers for our two Mac Book Air's and they all work great.

    • Written by from Castro Valley

We purchased multiple chargers so we do not have to move them around as we move around the house. The oldest one is three years old and is still working great. My best recommendations is to keep them cool by allowing them to breathe and do not yank on the cords too hard (treat them with respect).

    Maybe I'm lucky?

    • Written by from newton abbot

Had mine for 3 years this month and nothings gone wrong with it yet, the cable doesn't show signs of giving up anytime soon. I always think people are more likely to review when it's negative than when it's positive though, but I may just be one of the lucky few.

Long-term excellent durable if treated a certain way

This goes against the grain of reviews, but here's my experience. I have had three Apple white power bricks, each outlasting the laptop it came with (the weren't all 45W Magsafe – the first was the co-axial plug-in type with a white iBook, the second a 60W Magsafe with a Macbook and the current one a 45W Magsafe with an Air). I travel several days a week. I'd estimate I coil and uncoil the wire at least 10 times a week, several hundred or a thousand times a year, several thousand times in the time I've had the adapters.
But I always make sure I'm not allowing the wire to become twisted or strained. Where it emerges from the brick itself, I let it turn very gently through 90 degrees and then start wrapping the wire around the folding plastic 'ears', gently on the first lap and tightly thereafter. With each turn, I give the cable a twist with my thumb and forefinger to counteract the natural opposite twist it would otherwise get. And as I uncoil it I do the opposite. It doesn't take any time. Apple should put this in the instructions. It's the same way any sailor or trucker would coil up a rope, or gardener coil a hose, to stop it twisting and getting knotted and strained.

Take care of it, and it will be fine

    • Written by from Highgate center

Ive had my i7 Air for a year this month, i have my original and spare 45W I bought as a travel one. Both are still in 100 percent mint condition. No cracks, or frays, and still go strong. The magnetic plug can fall out when i turn quick, or sit in bed, but i simply just plug it back in... and its good to go... people that complain about this product obviously shove it into a bag, or wrap it up tight onto something or in a ball. just keep a 3 inch loop in the cord when winding, and don't yank it out of the wall or computer. You can only blame yourself if yours is falling apart. your doing something wrong

    Undeserved negativity

    • Written by from Seguin

Often times the problem with a power adapter no longer charging is simply the need to reset the SMC per Apple document HT3964.

Sadly, too often people want everything to work perfectly all the time and never have the need for any maintenance. I still have my adapters that have outlived my old MacBooks, and they work fine.

This power adapter is far superior to any other. Really works great. I love the indicator light and the magnet. Stays attached great but comes undone if pulled on hard enough just like it should. I have owned for over a year and still looks brand new. Overall a great product!

Took a beating for 2 years

    • Written by from Carmel

I use my macbook air 10+ hours a day to make my living, and I move around a lot while I do it. The power adapter made it through almost 2 years of abuse including lots of accidental step-on-disconnects.

You people writing negative comments are nuts!! I've had my first MacBook since '08 in college. Now my mom has it and I have to get her a new power cord because it is fraying. I am an artist and my Pro does so much for me it is incredible. Apple is a fantastic company and have helped me when I was in Denver, DC, Raleigh, London, and Paris for work. I have Ipods, an Ipad, and buy them for my family as well. Their costumer service is second to none!!!!!!

    Apple Power Cord

    • Written by from Rifle

I don't know what all the complaining is about. Yes the cords are expensive, but i have had the same power cord for the last 8 years it has never failed me and it works like a charm. I get so tired of people complaining about the cost of Mac stuff. These same people are willing to spend a third of the cost for "cheep" items, but they have to replace them 5 times more often.

    Several units, only 1 bad

    • Written by from Anchorage

I manage 30 mobile stations and have been doing so for five years. In that time, I've had one, ONE bad unit that died after a few months. I brought it to my Apple retail store and they replaced it with no questions.

    Great stuff

    • Written by from Chicago

I've owned Apple products for over 20 years. Each year new and better products keep coming out. I'm a proud owner of a MBA late 2010 and simply love it. I also own 2 power chargers, the original and the extra one for my office. Both continue to work great. Both with power surge protection. If you do not have a power surge protector with it and have a power failure, the minute the power comes back on - you will receive a power surge which is death to the charger. In my opinion, don't blame apple for your faults, sorry. I must admit that I had a Titanium PowerMac where I had issues which I sent to Apple Care. I also sent in my charger. They repaired the PowerMac and replaced my frail charger "at no cost" because part of apple care. So buy your Apple Care. It's worth its weight in gold.
    Peace to all.

Excellent - never had an issue

    • Written by from Airdrie

I'm not sure what the other reviewers are doing to their adapters, but mine has not only never caused an issue, but it has worked brilliantly for three years including multiple international travels every year, being used with converters in many countries, being wrapped up and packed up and unpacked thousands of times, and even recently getting caught in a hoover and sucked entirely in. I had to painstakingly unwrap it and pull it out, and afterwards it still worked like a charm.

    Great Product

    • Written by from London

Had my MacBook Air for over a year. No Problems at all - the charger is just as good as the day I got it! It only overheats if it is covered as it does get hot - no hotter than most windows laptops though! (and you have those on your lap!)
I also think the magsafe idea is great!

Getting a second to keep in my briefcase

    • Written by from Seattle

I've had my Air for over a year and subject this adapter heavy use. I unplug and wrap it every day to take with me on the road. After forgetting to pack it a few times, I've squeaked by on the battery, but have finally decided to get a second one. My original is in great shape (and seems much more flexible than the chargers I've seen for the MacBooks).

    Great Charger

    • Written by from Rochester

Reading the other 70+ reviews, it looks to me like someone with an agenda is trying to trash this charger. Notice that there are a disproportionate number of 1-star reviews that look like they are from the same author.
I wanted a second one for other locations in the house and, not liking Apple's price on these, I have purchased several cheap knockoffs in the $25-50 range. All have failed. I have concluded that when it comes to chargers, this is one area where it doesn't pay to scrimp. The superior design compared with Windows chargers gets it 2 stars right away. (compact, magsafe, flexible cord that lays flat, convenient cord windup, cord clip, interchangeable plugs, etc.) The fact that mine works flawlessly after 1 year of use gets it 5 stars.

    Amazing Product Compared to Alternatives

    • Written by from Kent

I use my charger every single day of my life. Most people, I must assume, do.

Every day I wind and unwind the cord several times. I plug it in at airports, I plug it in at my desk, and I plug it in at night. It gets moved, beaten, wound, unwound, dragged, and anything else you can imagine. I'm rough on tech.

The rubber coating does wear out and starts to get holes in it after you bend and wind it enough. The pins/springs wear out after you connect and disconnect it a few thousand times. It gets dirty and needs to be cleaned like any other electronic connector. (Easy to fix with some rubbing alcohol, cotton swabs, and a youtube video).

What I don't understand is why people are inclined to give it a bad review. The alternatives in other laptops do not protect your computer from someone tripping over the wire. None I have ever seen roll up as conveniently as this one does. Few connect as easily, and I haven't seen any that connect backwards and still work. If I have to sacrifice a little wear and tear for those features, I'll gladly buy a new one.

It took mine about a year to die. That's $79 divided by 365 days, or roughly $0.22 per day to have a working charger and keep my MacBook Air going. Even if you replaced it every 6 months, that's $0.44 per day to keep your laptop going. For something that is this important to my life, my job, my enjoyment, I don't think that is too unreasonable.

Plan to replace it. Use it. Break it. They're really cheap for what they provide.
