iWorks is complicated—hard to learn and hard to use
Written by JB from Chapel Hill
14/12/2009
I have long been a satisfied user of AppleWorks. It was sophisticated enough to handle my needs for word processing, spread sheets, and data bases. But Apple Works is now hard to find and no longer supported by Apple. I regretted this. Nevertheless, I was willing to try the new iWorks.
Well, I've tried IWorks. Learning it is hard. It is much more complicated than I need. Too many bells and whistles. Too many adjustments of this and that. In the past Apple has traditionally developed products that are intuitive and easy to learn. iWorks is not in this tradition. I am unsure whether a simpler revision is possible.
Perhaps Apple can develop an "iWorks for Dummies" for the rest of us. Including a simple database would help, too.3 of 5 people found this useful

worth it for keynote alone
Written by SL from TADWORTH

Been using MS office for a few months, never liked it much on a PC, liked it even less on the mac, as got so used to things just working!
Downloaded the free trial if iwork , and made a presentation on keynote, wow! Very simple to do and looks great!
Sadly the trial ended and I went back to powerpoint, and I hated it, everything looks so cheesy and unoriginal. Just couldn't bear using it so went and got the full version!
Yet to try pages and numbers properly yet, but considering the low price, seems worth it for keynote alone! Was this useful?

The best software deal on the market

I was a great AppleWorks fan, but I absolutely adore iWorks '09. There's a lot to learn in this suite, so I highly recommend getting the iWorks Apple Training Manual by Peachpit Press. Keynote makes a dynamic multi-media presentation. iWorks is quite an accomplishment, and for the price, you won't believe how powerful it is.

OK,
First it took a call to find out how to turn off the auto-formating for outlines. It drove me insane! It was so difficult to find! AAARRRGGGG This should be a right click turn off.
Second, really, no template for labels? Maybe no one else uses the US Mail...???? Maybe it's here...but like everything else hidden in a fourth tier menu ....somewhere. Mail merge would be nice. I miss databases...really. It was easy to customize 50 letters with a mail merge. Gosh that would be nice to do again... sigh... why does progress march backwards? Why make things harder? The best program for dbase and word processing was works from microsoft...the first one, from 20 years ago.
So to sum up...turn off autoformatting with right click, second make a template to make labels. Duh!!! Too Cheap to pay Avery for the use of their name? Of course you are, plus you wouldn't be so ivory tower and independent and cool.
Well, darnit, we are trying to get some work done here and you guys are blowing it.
BLOWING IT! Next time I will stick with Microsoft.27 of 56 people found this useful

Disillusioned
Written by JC from Durango

I bought iWork because the graphics looked sophisticated and convincing, but the functional options are limited, from printing a Keynote presentation handout to constructing a Numbers spreadsheet. This seems like Apple designed an eye-candy version of "Office for Mac." I'm not fond of the appearance and ease of "Office," but it has far more sophistication and flexibility than iWork. Apple, please keep working on iWork!

You should try openning the preferences pane and check the box by the "Editing" section that reads "Back up previous version when saving".

Gotta be honest...
Written by JK from Lawrence

When I first got my macbook, I installed Microsoft Word 2008, because that's what I've been using on the PC, and that's the platform I was used to. Recently, I finally took the leap, and installed iWork, after reading/listening to several reviews about why iWork was better.
Aside from the general look which works better on a mac environment than the microsoft program, I found it very easy to use, and it loads up very quickly, minimizing the time I have to wait for the program to actually load. It has yet to crash on me once (while I've experienced lots more crashes on the Microsoft Word), and I love the full screen mode, which keeps my short-attention span on the task at hand rather than have me go back and forth to various programs wasting time. iWork can open .doc & .docx files, and it can also save in .doc mode in case you needed to share it with a windows user. I do think Excel is better than Numbers, but Keynote trumps Powerpoint 100%!
It's my default program, and I simply love this program!12 of 14 people found this useful

Does anybody else notice that Apple does pretty much everything better than MS. There is no difference here. Pages is one of the most useful tools I use and makes office 2007 a joke. there is no frustrations with the stupid ribbon Microsoft uses. Overall, another great job by Apple.

iwork beats office
Written by MF from Barnet

Pages is far better for documents than word and its page layout is for my purposes is much easier to get results than top end quark or indesign.
Keynote is also superior to powerpoint, although I find excel easier to use than numbers. My main irritant is the use of separate pallete for fonts ( menu) and text alignment ( inspector). It would be much easier in the same place.8 of 8 people found this useful

Numbers has some nice features but is underdeveloped and grindingly slow when processing large amounts of data. Had to buy Office just for Excel.

Pages, great; Numbers, worst ever
Written by BH from Portland
7/11/2009
While the Pages module is fantastic and a huge improvement from Word, the spreadsheet program Numbers is just about the least useful and most frustrating piece of software I have ever had the misfortune to waste my time on. If you do any kind of higher-level spreadsheet work (than just summing columns of numbers), I advise you not to waste your time even trying to learn to use Numbers. It is plain garbage. Even simple things like trying to select a line to change its color are made impossibly frustrating.
However, kudos to Apple for making Pages! It rocks! (An equal amount to how much Numbers is lame).80 of 105 people found this useful

Pages as a word processor mediocre
Written by PF
3/11/2009
If you are contemplating moving over to pages from MS Office for the word processing application, I can't recommend it. The application is much faster and convenient, since it is built for the Mac and as you probably know, MS applications for the Mac are typically slower and on the Mac rather than a PC. My biggest problem is with Pages...the word processor. Pages does not have some abilities of what a person who needs the program to perform serious word processing. For example; to type many commonly used phrases, Pages does not have the ability to type a few key stroke such a xxx for a phrase like, "Dear Sir/Madam, we are glad to inform you"... I am told that the new version of Leopard (Snow Leopard) allows a user to assign shortcuts and solve the problem, but why a "word processor" would be designed without such basic features is beyond me. On the good side, Pages seems to be able to exchange to and from Word files without any loss of format...which is a must.

Great product!
Written by LH from West Deptford

I switched from PC to a Mac about six months ago and needed the iWork software to do some papers for school. I was originally going to buy the Microsoft Office software but decided to get iWork because it was significantly cheaper.
Now I will say that all I have used is Pages (the word processing program) but I am very impressed. Its so user friendly. Much better than Microsoft Word. The only complaint I have about Pages is that there isn't a shortcut to get to the thesaurus....which I use alot. Other than that its a great program, and visually is much more appealing than Word. It also has "full screen" mode, which allows you to type your document with a black background to minimize distractions.....beautiful option.58 of 58 people found this useful
