    Poor Quality/Short Life

    • Written by from Benicia

As others have noted, the adapter worked fine for about 3 uses on both the imac and the MacBook. Then it started to fail, preventing the installed computer software from loading (or at least I could not see it on the desktop). This seemed to be progressive failure over a couple of months. I am led to believe that this unit is very sensitive to handling and perhaps electronic challenges largely based on what others have written. I had noted that the resolution is lousy so when I get the replacement unit I will follow the suggestions of others to adjust the computer resolution to get a better picture (once I figure out how to do it). Getting a replacement unit of the same design seems to be the only way to achieve the computer to TV connection. At $19 it is not a bad way to go, only if I could get the unit to be more reliable and to last a little longer.

Apple dropped the bomb really badly on this one.

    • Written by from Houma

The new Apple Macbook pro does not have a way of connecting with a third party monitor unless you purchase this connection. For a $2000 dollar machine, they should add this. I'm really tempted to return this one, and go ahead with using the old one just because of that.

I ordered this connector online, but I failed to realize that the mini-Dvi to DVI connector isn't the same. That is my fault. I'll order it again. Now I have to wait another week for this connector to arrive. This is just one huge headache.

I own a MacBook and a MacBook Pro and two 20 Apple Cinema Displays. The Mini DisplayPort DVI adapter works perfectly with both computers and their displays.

    Not for larger monitors

    • Written by from Morristown

Fine product, works well. But note: this adapter will only support monitors up to 1900x1200. For larger monitors (e.g. 27 inch) with higher resolutions, you'll need to purchase the Dual-link DVI to Mini DisplayPort adapter.

    Unreliable

    • Written by from London

I've bought one of these and I'm pretty disappointed. I use it to connect a 2010 15" MacBookPro (8.2) to an ASUS PB278Q. Very often when I turn on the computer, the image in the monitor is completely grained (full of noise) and I can see the desktop below the noise. I need to unplug the USB part of the adapter (the power I suppose) and then re-plug it. Sometimes I need to do this twice. It may also work turn off and on the monitor. One thing is for sure: When I turn on the computer, or awake it from sleep, it's completely impossible to know whether the noise/grain will appear. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. I regret a LOT having bought this, specially because later I learned that I could simlpy have bought a cheap Mini Displayport to Displayport cable........

If you can, use a DisplayPort cable instead...

    • Written by from Elmhurst

I used this adaptor for quite a while.... Picture quality going from my MBP to my 22" Dell monitor was poor. Shadowing under text, blurry colors, etc. Completely unusable for the Photoshop work I needed to do. The Dell monitor when connected to my Windows PC via DVI was crystal clear.

As a test, I bought a $10 DisplayPort-to-MiniDisplayPort cable and brought my MBP into the office and connected it to several 22" Dell and HP monitors we had with DisplayPorts on them... Wow! What a difference!!!! As perfect as you would want an external display to be!

BTW - All of the monitors I tested against were priced under $200 - as was my monitor at home. They are noting but "average" monitors you would mass deploy in a typical office setting - they were not $1000 displays. So I do consider this an (forgive the pun) apples-to-apples comparison. The only differences between the units was the presence of a DisplayPort port or not.

The only resolution I tested at was 1680x1050 - as this is the native resolution of all the monitors I have access to.

No doubt to me - if you have the option of connecting via DisplayPort, then do so. While this adapter does "work", it does not work nearly as well as native DisplayPort.

    Poor Quality

I bought one of these, but have to say I am very disappointed by its poor reliability. Having paid the Apple Tax for this product, I was very disappointed to find that one has to wiggle the DVI cable to make it work sometimes. Having invested in quite an expensive cable, that works reliably elsewhere, I have to say that it comes down to this adaptor.

You asked for it so stop complaining about it!

I'm not sticking up for Apple here -I agree that shipping with one adaptor is the right thing to do. However, please don't beat up on solutions to something we all ask for in the first place. That's a stronger, faster, lighter, better product. Every element to the new MBP gets scrutinized and made better, much like F1 cars. Furthermore, the MDP is a NEW INDUSTRY STANDARD! Check out the Video Electronics Standards Association and the flexibility of the MDP to connect to HDMI, DVI, and VGA (although the latter is low-res and outdated). If you don't want to pay a premium for genuine Apple accessories, then buy aftermarket brands (sound like the exact business model of the auto industry to you?) This is the way the world works and it ain't gonna change -at least not until we all stop being such demanding consumers and are happy with bland and beige for forever!

I've been using one of these for a couple years to connect a Dell U2412 monitor to my Mid 2011 Mac Mini. I have a second monitor (same model) connected via an HDMI to Mini DIsplayPort adapter. Both monitors are running at their native 1920x1200 resolutions, and I have had no problems whatsoever.

A friend recently bought a cheaper Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter online for his MacBook Air, and he had problems with noisy video (i.e. lots of sparkly pixels). I tried his adapter with my setup, and I saw the same thing on my monitor. He then bought another type of adapter from Best Buy, and it had exactly the same problem. He's headed to the Apple Store now.

    No Good - Dell 2405P

    • Written by from Mornington

Does not output a clear resolution when connected from Macbook Pro Retina to Dell 2405P (1920x1200). It "works" in the sense that you can see the screen, but the display is super blurry, and not usable.

I have a MacBook Pro w/Retina and wanted to connect my SAMSUNG SyncMaster 22". My SyncMaster has VGA and DVI, obviously, I wan't to hook it up to the DVI port of my monitor. This cable works like a charm. I'm also using my old Logitech wireless Wave keyboard with no issues at all.

I also recommend using the BookArc to hold your MacBook Pro, very sweet.

According to "Apples" FaQ Page on this adapter it is "Active" not "Passive" it isn't close to being Active because it does not work with a tripple monitor setup one has to be disabled for it to work. Great work Apple not... One unimpressed customer

Mini Display to DVI TOO SHORT!

    • Written by from Billerica

I Went to the Apple store in burlington mall and bought a brand new macBook. I already had an HP screen from my old PC. I found this adapter and thought of connecting my computer to the screen or my High Def TV. I opened the the box and the things like 3" long. I Think it is a Good investment if you have annother 70 bucks to blow on a DVI extention cord.
