Rescued from sheer boredom and the beginning of a chlosterphobic outburst..

    Written by SM from WILLIAMSBURG

Ok - very surprised that the thing does not charge the battery. But then again that makes sense as the "Charging" Stations in Airports now need their slice of the pie. Was watching Star Trek, when the steady decline of my power available became more interesting than the movie. Apple products do exactly what Apple says it does. Nothing more, Nothing less. Curiously that other company has not caught on to that yet.

    Left on plane twice, Wow

Written by PL from La Quinta

    29/11/2009

This product works just fine. However there is a flaw in design. The tip often stays in the plane socket when pulled out. I have lost two in the last six months. Yes, I should look each time but there is something to the fact that when you pull it out you think you have it. However, it takes a special investigation each time. The fact that you plug it in without incident, but when you pull it, it often separates, is a design flaw. Yes, Apple could do better. Where is the replacement part?

Toot. Like much of Apples stuff

    Written by JS from Figtree

Have yet to come across a plane I can plug it into. Waste of money.

I can't say it doesn't work, as I have not had the opportunity to try it yet.

Naturally, this was not advertised with the product.

Don't leave plastic bit behind + Guilty, should have read the description

Written by JP from Mc Donald

I was surprised the Airline Adapter doesn't charge. I guess it makes sense if the airlines can't provide the amperage. I am very happy I read the reviews as I didn't consider the possibility I'd leave the Lighter adapter behind... Now I will know to check.

Powers computer, but it's not a recharger

    Written by RS from Athens

    23/10/2009

The adapter works very well. Be aware, though, that it supplies power to the computer but does not recharge the computer's battery. If your battery is low when you start using this adapter, it will still be low when you finish.

The reason for this, apparently, is that powering the computer and charging the battery simultaneously would draw more power from the airplane's outlet than is allowed.

As other reviewers have noted, keep track of the detachable parts so you don't leave part of it behind, still in the power outlet.

    Simple, works well

    Written by DL from RENO

    22/10/2009

This adapter is light, simple and works just as it should. Unfortunately, like some others, I didn't see the 20 mm adapter was still in the socket when I unplugged, and left one on the plane by mistake. It's my fault, but I wish Apple would sell replacement adapters. They could also add a simple plastic leash to keep the removable adapter from getting lost.

Yet another plug left in the seat socket.

    Written by MR from Austin

    2/10/2009

Yes, yes. I know. It is the users' fault for leaving. I thought that before buying this and I still think so after losing *2* plugs so far.

Still, people can be rushed or just forget with travel distractions, without all these reviewers being idiots?

It's not that hard to offer the plug to be sold separately is it?

Engineered to Make You Keep Buying Replacements

Written by KL from Palm Springs

    2/10/2009

I am now on my 3rd airline adapter. Why? Because the 2-part design I swear is engineered to make the buyer lose the 20mm adapter piece that makes this product useful on most airlines. My 20 mm adapters have either fallen off, or I mistakenly unplug my adapter after a flight, and don't realize the 20 mm piece is still in the socket. I've even double-checked, think I see the 20mm part still on my adapter, and only to find out later it's still on the plane.

From an environmental perspective, I think this is a big issue. From my pocketbook's perspective, I'm tired of buying $49 adapters. From a customer satisfaction perspective, I'm suspect Apple doesn't sell replacement 20 mm adapters (just the $49 replacement), as well as I'm suspect of all my Apple earbuds whose rubber grips that hold the buds in one's ears always fall apart within a few weeks of usage.

    Works fine. Neat Adaptor.

    Written by RG from Manchester

    27/09/2009

I've used this on BA flights on 747 and 777 in premium eco; some of the following is specific to this. You don't need the 20mm adaptor, just the plain cable. It says on the packaging that if the led above the socket isn't green try plugging it in again (up to 5 times). However, you simply need to ask someone to turn on the power - it's a central control. It stays green the whole time then on all the seats, plug or no plug.

The plug on the laptop end is good and low profile rather than sticking out like the normal mains plug does. The other end is less good (~3cm protruding) and hence sticks into your leg space a bit on these seats. I'm sure it's in a different place elsewhere..
It's the first time i've had an adaptor for the plane and I'm really pleased with it.

Uninterrupted power for my MBP (5,5) from Manchester to Sydney. Great!

    lousy design

Written by WW from New York

    24/09/2009

If you are going to make it a 2-part design, which *does* make it more useful, as it works on multiple kinds of outlets, at least make it so the pieces lock together.

Working frantically on a plane, then pulling it out from under the seat, I left the 20mm adapter there and didn't notice. Come on, guys - you can make it so the parts click and lock together.

Lost the outer adaptor ...Now USELESS

    Written by NS from Wichita

    24/09/2009

I wish I had seen these reviews earlier. The product works well as an adaptor BUT SHOULD NOT COME APART!. My plug in is sitting in 10F on AA but do you think it can be found? This should not come apart so easily and since it does THE ADAPTOR should be available as a seperate piece. Am not sure I am willing to fork another $49 over to Apple for this poorly designed piece. The entire plug in system for the Mac Book Pro leaves much to be desired with the loose plug if you want to add the extension. Would think this would be permanently attached as well. Unfortunately with their "Mag Safe", while good in concept, limits 2nd party plug ins. Love the Mac Book Pro...hate their plug ins.

    Works well on empower ports

    Written by DM from Pittsburgh

    10/07/2009

I've only tried this with an EmPower port, and it worked great.

As noted in the other reviews, it does not charge the battery. (Note that this is by design--because of the limited power draw of the power ports in the seats.)

    Horrible design!

Written by TC from New York

    22/06/2009

This adaptor is in two pieces...I just left one on the airplane in the plug. My last Mac airline adaptor was a solid one-piece and lasted for years. Since you cannot buy replacement pieces, I'm out $50. I'm not happy.

Medicore Design But Works as Advertised

    Written by SM from Phoenix

    17/06/2009

The two part design is just plain silly. also i would have gladly taken on some extra bulk if they included a built in DC to AC power adapter so i could actually charge your MB.
Also it is expensive, this should be $30 not $50. That much money for something with only one function is rediculous.

Bottom Line: Works great for its stated purpose but that purpose isnt great and you can get a cheaper adapter at any electronics store that will allow anything to be charged by it

Should clip in solid or have a clip

    Written by GP from SOUTHLAKE

My primary problem with this is that the two pieces at the end come apart very easily. I have not lost mine yet, but think that I am at risk for losing it on a flight.

This is a poorly designed device!

    Written by JC from Cambridge

    22/05/2009

This device comes in two pieces which do not
lock securely together. Therefore it is very
easy to accidentally leave one piece of the connector
in the airline power plug. You cannot buy the
individual pieces, so if this happens you must
replace the entire cable. This could have been
much better designed. It could be designed as
one single cable (as for pcs) or the two pieces
    could lock together.

    Nice, but lost connector

    Written by PM from Norman

    19/05/2009

This is a tough one to review as I like the product, it works well, but the end section that goes into the power connector on a flight is too loose and is easily left in the socket. It needs a clip... or something to prevent this happening..... other than a loosing the first one and having to buy a whole new set for $50.

    Airline 2 part adapter

    Written by TG from CAMARILLO

    23/04/2009

Apple should make this item so that the 2 parts clip together, making it more difficult to leave one part in the airline socket! American Airlines has theirs down below your knees, and there's no way one could even see that it's left in there unless you are under 2' tall. I was disappointed on my return flight to realize that I no longer had the use of my laptop because my adapter had separated when I unplugged it on my outbound flight! Come on, Apple, you can do better than that!

On battery life and the Apple MagSafe Airline Adapter

    Written by MG from Williamstown

    23/03/2009

The Apple MagSafe Airline Adapter's inability to charge batteries -- as noted in the product description above -- is intentional. As indicated earlier, airline seat power ports max out at 75W, meaning an adaptor capable of running at 85W could pop a circuit breaker as it approached peak load.
Moreover, MBs and MBPros do not need anything like 85W to run. Indeed, the earlier MB Pros had 60W batteries, and the unibody models have 50W -- good for several hours. Whether the battery is charged or discharged or entirely absent, the operating current the computer needs is only a fraction of what the airline or the plug in your kitcen provides. It's closer to 15 or 20W than the 85W the charger offers.
You can burn DVDs for the duration of the flight, simultaneously charging your iPhone and your neighbors iPod while editing video, and your battery will discharge at no greater rate than it would in full sleep mode.
Removing the battery is not advisable, as its presence provides structural integrity.
