Does not work with iPod Touch 3rd Generation (version 3.1.2 software)
Written by MP from London
8/12/2009
I just bought one of these from HMV for my iPod touch (64gb) and then returned it to the store 6 hours later, disappointed.
Upon removing the cable from the box I was impressed with the quality of this cable but when connecting it to the tv only the audio worked- absolutely no video. Was only once I started looking on this site it became obvious that for some reason this cable does not work with iPod Touch / iPhone software version 3.1.2
When this glitch is fixed I'll be first in line to buy it (again). Until then, I'll use a 3.5mm to RCA cable to connect (albeit sound only) for a fraction of the price of this cable. Potentially a 5-star product, but for now I'm reluctant to even offer it 1-star as it doesn't work (yet). Was this useful?

Watch films on TV using your iphone
Written by AD from Bristol
6/12/2009
I'm sure most iphone owners don't even realise that you can use the phone to download films and TV programmes that you can then watch in quite acceptable quality on TV. Even assistants in a local Apple Store were rather negative about the quality that would be achieved using the iphone and this lead. In fact:
- PIcture quality on a 32inch TV is comparable with standard TV (not quite DVD quality)
- Sound on TV or linked hifi is excellent
- You can rent films from iTunes. Downloading can take a while but at least you don't have to rush to a store to take it back afterwards. You can also buys films and TV programmes.
- On my 3GS BBC iplayer worked fine too but streamed picture quality not as good as TV.
- As the lead does not rely on a dock you can leave most protective cases you might have for your iphone in place
- So although the price sounds quite high, in fact given the functionality it is not too bad.
- Just remember to check that your TV is compatible with the lead and the progressive scan output of the the 3GS (check iTunes Help for output and resolution from other ipod models, eg interlaced). Was this useful?

I bought this today, and found the instructions not very good. Eventully I managed to get this to work with Catch up TV, but would not work with Sky sports. Not sure if Sky have put somthing on their application to stop this working? Has anyone got this to work?

Not Very Useful
Written by AP from Poole

This AV lead doesn't support video output on version 3.1.2 of the iPhone which is the reason that I bought it. Until this bug is fixed it's only worth one star.

Good, but!
Written by IH from Leeds
19/06/2009
Works well on video, but be aware that some tv's do not support sound without a video signal, so you may not be able to play music without playing a slide show. Not the fault of the cable, but the way the tv is designed.
Not made clear in the instructions, I had to search the net to be sure.18 of 27 people found this useful

It does what it says, but I own an iPod Touch, and the quality when outputted to the TV is bad. I know ''Apple TV'' and all but I want to see HDMI and maybe even upping the quality of iTunes videos a little.

Works as expected with my 42" Panasonic Plasma and my iPhone 3G. Picture quality is not as good as DVD but is much better than expected and definitely watchable. Video, music, Youtube, photos all show OK.
Cable seems to be well made and although the price seems high, you get a charger, and full AV/USB cable for less than the cost of a separate charger and USB only cable.

Purchased the component cable today, what a brill product, connected the red, blue and green plugs to my HD TV and the red and white audio plugs to my 5.1 surround system, all works fine, the downloaded videos, music and podcasts have fab picture quality and the sound is awesome through the cinema system. Price is high but the quality is more than worth it.

I Pod Component Lead
Written by SC from BILLERICAY
24/11/2008
I have tried 2 of these cable without success. Both appear to have identical faults. Very poor quality. Don't buy one.
When connected to TV no picture is shown. This is due to there being no output on the green connector. The TV uses this to pick up on the composite synce signal. Hence no picture. When put on an oscilloscope I can see good video waveforms on the blue and red leads but only a fixed voltage of about 1-2 volts on the green.
Lead was tested on two seperate Tv's (Panasonic Plasma, and Comet branded cheepie), with 3 different Ipods. Gen 5 and touch.
I don't know if there is a build issue or just poor design. Has cost me dearly in petrol going back and forward to the stors.30 of 81 people found this useful

Good for iPhone 3G
Written by MH from GLEN WAVERLEY

I bought this as I wanted to watch my downloaded shows from my ipod onto the television in my bedroom at night.
I thought that (for me) and apple tv wasn't necessary to do this and this product works wonderfully with the iPhone 3G. Very easy to setup and use. I like the fact that it has a USB charger for the ipod/iPhone.

Clarifying a few bits of misinformation from other reviewers...
Written by RR from WOKINGHAM
11/09/2008
This is a Component video cable that carries an analogue signal to any TV that has a component video input, whether that be a SDTV, HDTV, 'analogue TV', 'digital TV', 'full HD' or 'HD Ready' is irrelevant but your TV must have a Component input (Green, Blue and Red connections) for video and RCA input (Red and White connectors) for audio. This is not the same as and should not be confused with the common Composite video input (single Yellow connector) found on just about every TV set!
If your iPod outputs a 480p/576p signal (both of which are Standard definition) then your TV will need to support Progressive scan input!
If your iPod outputs a 480i/576i signal then it will work with any TV. Generally 480i for US sets and 576i for UK. Although most modern TVs support both and automatically switch.
Hope that clears things up.131 of 136 people found this useful

Appalling design
Written by JR from Wallasey
4/08/2008
1, The smooth design of the plugs makes them very difficult to remove, long nosed pliers are needed in a tight set-up, no thought to practicality.
2, Long straggling fly leads, liable to snagging and breaking
3, Does not include a component/composite switch
4, Too short, should be 5 metres
5, I have a comparable lead for a PSP, it was a quarter of the price, 5 metres, has a component/composite switch, correct length fly leads and plugs that you can unplug without tools.
6, Apple put some gubbins in their iPods that mean they will only output video with Apple OEM leads so this overpriced bad design is your only choice. No Stars.40 of 81 people found this useful

Simply superb
Written by GS from West Perth

Hello all,
Was just about to purchase an Apple TV, then realized that my iPod touch will output both video and audio signals.
Simply plugged in the cable into the iPod and the component and audio cables into my Denon receiver. Turn on the receiver and TV and watch away.
My receiver will take the component video and upscale and output via HDMI.
Simply a pleasure to use

I love this product connected to my sound system so can play all my music stored on my phone, but when i try to connect to my hdtv component inputs, i can't get any picture through my tv. I have a pioneer pdplx508d & i am using the 1st gen iphone with v2.0 software with tv out enabled but can't get it to work.
Besides that, the cable is of good quiality but the price is a bit high.12 of 24 people found this useful

Great, but...
Written by BJ from calgary

This product has Fantastic audio and video Quality, and with its built in charger, you dont worry about your ipod running out of power mid-movie
But there is a drawback.
This cable does not hook up to the regular 3 prong slot, of 2 audio and 1 video, you can only use it on the 5 prong slot, which is with newer TV models.
So this high quality video has its price by the cable not working with every TV, as i found out sadly, only 1 in 5 TV's was compatible with it!33 of 64 people found this useful

iPods and iPhones with standard definition TVs
Written by JM from Chelmsford
16/06/2008
I was thinking of buying an Apple TV until I realised that my iPod Classic could connect to a TV. As I have a standard TV with SCART sockets I bought an adapter box from JS Technology in Scotland. Alas, the iPod Classic has 480p or 576p outputs which won't work. However, the iPod Touch and iPhone will work with their 480i or 576i outputs (as will the Apple TV), so I'll be in the queue for an iPhone on 11th July!
As usual, a beautifully designed and manufactured piece of equipment, even though it's just a cable.62 of 110 people found this useful
