    Remove & Replace

    • Written by from Lubbock

I purchased my 17" MBP April 2006, in 2008 I had to replace the battery due to overheating and the "life cycle" Bulge. the second battery I will now replace this month... The reason it last me over 5 years is it spent most of its time on my desk, plugged in WITHOUT THE BATTERY, the battery would only be used in the laptop when traveling. I realize this IS a design flaw, however Id rather deal with this problem than no longer having an 17" MBP available anymore. Dear APPLE, Its been 8 years with this one, id buy a new 17" if you'd market one.

Used and maintained correctly, excellent! How to...

    • Written by from Waltham

I have been using the same (original) battery for 8 years. REALLY! No bulging, no problems.
The unplugged battery life was 3 1/2 to 4 hours for several years, and slowly decreased to about 2 hours now.

How? Very simple. I always fully charged the battery (100%), then unplugged it and ran my laptop on only the battery until I got either the "battery is low" warning or it ran completely out of juice, more often waiting until the battery died completely. Result: a battery that still works great after 8 years!

Unplug your computer unless you are charging!!!

What can I say about Mac Batteries... they're great balloons!

    • Written by from Colchester

Currently on the 4th battery since purchase of my MacBook Pro new in 2006! The batteries are good when they work but at the price Apple charge for them I'm disappointed they do not come with a length of string to hold on to them when they inflate like a balloon. Now seriously, I can accept a battery naturally depleting to at the end of its life but to expand like they do when they come to end of life is just unacceptable. Very disappointing from an expensive 'supposedly' quality product. Oh and even my Late 2011 MacBook Pro battery has got a bump on it now despite it registering good health! This bump now interferes with the track pad rendering 'click' inoperable... Come on Apple sort it out!

How can Apple not make this right?

    • Written by from Huntington Beach

Now the 3rd one to bulge. Once the trackpad button stops working, you are out of luck and have a potential explosion on your hands. I am going to do the puncture method on my newly trashed battery and post it on YouTube with the countless others just to keep the discussion alive. Apple should fix this and provide free replacement batteries that actually last longer than 2 years.

    bulging, bent battery case.

    • Written by from Pincourt

I've had to replace this battery 3 times. Every single one had the same problem. Even with proper battery care and cycling, every one has failed miserably. At around 225 cycles or about a year and a half, every battery I've had has stopped holding a charge and starts to bulge--breaking out of its own casing. A terrible battery... especially for the price.

    these do not last

    • Written by from London

They are great during the first year, but all three i have had burst the battery cases after about 24-28 months. This is an expensive battery to last only about 2 years!
Apple will gladly sell me another but no thanks.

    Fool me once...

    • Written by from Phoenix

When my first battery swelled up and stopped working, I got a replacement battery. I got an official one from Apple, thinking that this would be the best option. Well, my second official Apple battery just met the same demise. This time, I’m gonna go with a cheaper alternative. I realize that it might not last, but it'll be a whole lot easier to replace the next time, knowing that I've only spent a fraction of the money for it.

Need to purchase a 3rd battery

    • Written by from Kamloops

the last two of my batteries bulged, it actually cracked my Speck hard cover case.

With so many bad comments, I too, would think that Apple would have fixed the issue... Is it just bad batteries or is there something in the computer causing the batteries to do this??

Well guys and gals at Apple, take a look at these reviews this battery issue continues to happen. I am now on my third battery with the same issue of bulging. Hoping something "bad" does not happen due to the compromised battery issue you know about.

My 17" MacBook Pro battery started bulging one month ago. Called Apple and the service rep although very nice said there was no record of Bulging Battery issues; then I found out that there was a voluntary recall of I believe 1.8 million Batts not to mention the hundreds of comments on this site! Can't find them in any store within 100 miles of my city and online order through Apple says it would ship in 3-4 weeks! Very disenchanted with Apple right now. Buyer beware!

    Battery Issue

    • Written by from Missoula

Yea, mine just bulged out on me too, though I must say I've had the McBook for about 8 years and have had no previous problems. I've heard that leaving the machine plugged in with the setting on sleep can cause this problem, though I'm unsure.

each one bulged at the three year mark

    • Written by from Rancho Cucamonga

The first one bulged just before the three year apple care was up so they replaced if at no charge. the replacement batter bulged at three years and a month but it was out of warrantee anyway after an year.

Doesn't Apple see all the one star ratings and feel embarrassed enough to do something about it?

    3rd battery in 3 years

A really bad joke... my computer does not leave my desk and run charger most of the time. My battery don't last more than 1 year. after a while they keep discharging and the prompt of low battery doesn't come on and the computer just die... which is obviously very bad for the hardrive. And of course it's £100 every time.
    Nice on Apple!

    Supernova Battery

And here we go again! 3rd MBP 17" in 4 years. I have a few Apple products (Apple TV, iPad (1st, 3rd and 5th gen) iphone5 plus 2013 iMac 27inch 3.4GHz, so as you've guessed I'm a Mac Fan). But the battery in my MBP is awful.

After 13 months of use I returned from a weeks holiday to find the battery forcing it's way out of the casing. It's split wide open exposing the silver cells inside, plus it distorted the MBP.

Yes I know rechargeable batteries don't last for ever, but no other Apple product (which requires batteries) has shown such a dangerous design flaw, Apple you really need to sort this out, its DANGEROUS!

    Excellent Battery

    • Written by from Newcastle

I've had this MacBook for 6 years, and in that time I have had 2 batteries for it; the one it arrived with, and the replacement I bought about 3 years ago. I recently bought a new one from Apple, and yet again, I am not disappointed. I tend to get between 3 and 4 hours out of the battery when I treat it properly, and if the battery life starts to diminish, I put it through a complete charging cycle, and it works fine again. I once had an issue with a different MacBook, where the battery was only lasting about half an hour, but I took it into Apple and they replaced it, no bother.

    Another excellent product, Apple. Thanks.
