Sloppy manufacturing means this product does not assemble as shown

    • Written by from Manchester

Prepare for disappointment — the reality of this product is a long way from that advertised on the website.

Ignoring the needlessly fiddly assembly required, it turns out that the two metal 'bars' that raise the Lightning connector and support the back of the iPhone are not parallel when the product is assembled — unlike the product image shown here.

It appears that this is due to shoddy manufacturing by TwelveSouth (cost cutting, perhaps?), which has resulted in the chamfer angle on the two pieces not being the same!! Basic geometry tells us that the resulting two pieces can never be parallel! On the particular product I received, rather than being parallel as shown on the box (and on this and TwelveSouth's website), the two pieces converge — like the angled sides of a capital letter 'A'. I guess some poor customers may have received versions of this product in which the two pieces diverge — like a letter 'V'!!

There is NO EXCUSE for this, which sadly evidences an unacceptable inattention to manufacturing quality at TwelveSouth.
I will not be purchasing anything further from this third-rate company.

    Waste of money

    • Written by from Cooper City

Recently ordered this product and was disappointed. Set-up required some dexterity - construction was not very sturdy and the worst part was it doesn't work well with the 2 meter lightning cord (doesn't fit well in the bottom groove). I'd like to send it back. It feels like a kid's toy.

    Going Back!

    • Written by from Edmond

First of all, this has to be assembled. It isn't hard to do but it isn't easy either! I have had this for about 2 weeks and this morning the end of the charger snapped off and stayed in my phone. I don't like the way the product is engineered. Thankfully I was able to get the end of the cable out of my iPhone 6 plus but beware. If you get this, you need to pull your phone straight out of the dock and not wiggle it. Like I said, just not engineered well in my opinion. I am on the lookout for an alternative.

I have an iphone 6 and an ipad mini2. Neither of which seem very stable while plugged. It is wobbly at best and the ipad wont charge 90% of the time. This is going back to the store.

Better buy some tools first or buy a different dock

    • Written by from Cave Creek

The two vertical columns should be erected parallel. But unfortunately they are not because their downsides are differently angled - severe mistake in manufacturing.

This means not only you do not have proper support but it looks ugly. I used a metal file to rasp some aluminum off the bottom. Now it looks even uglier but at least it gives support.

They claim that their product works with "...practically any case on the market...especially cases with recessed connections that no other dock can fit..."

Well it does not fit my Apple-Store bought case.

The reason? You must use different plastic clips for different phones/cases and the manufacturer is too cheap to include several of them. They include size 0, 2 and 5 and I would need 3 or 4.

So I used an electric drill to adjust the clip to my requirements. Without the drilling the iPhone would not even connect electrically and the stand would be completely senseless.

    Buy something else!

The angles of the 2 bars were unequal.
    Jagged rough cut on end.
Nice design but poor quality manufacture.
I have many Twelve South products.
    All are high quality.
Very surprised Twelve South let this get by.

    Nice idea, bad quality control

    • Written by from Garner

Liked the stand overall and it's configuration options. However, one of the screws was so badly deformed that it could not be used, and the angle of the back piece did not match the angle of the front piece making it very difficult to try and adjust. I contacted customer support at Twelve South (with photos) and they wanted me to send the defective stand in (at my cost) and they would send me a replacement within a couple weeks. At no time did they offer to send me some replacement screws or parts. I decided to return the stand and find another option.

This dock is shipped to you in several pieces. You must assemble the dock with screws and wrenches before you can use it. Furthermore, the dock is completely useless if you don't have your own cable which is not obvious from the description. Not just that, without the cable you can't use the dock because the end of the cable pushes through the dock to support the device. The concept is ok and the design is ok but the execution is completely flawed. For the combined price of the dock and cable, I think I'll get a mophie dock. Finally, there is a plastic panel that snaps onto the bottom to hide the cables and allow the dock to sit flat. This panel often snaps off.

    Not for the ipad mini

    • Written by from GAINSBOROUGH

Bought this for my mini iPad. It is not substantial enough for this piece of equipment, the iPhone maybe? The main (almost sole) connection to the stand is from the Lightning cable connector. Other than that there is around 2 inch x 1/2 inch stand behind it to support. It wobbles when touched and I think is putting much stress on the connectors? Other than that, one of the four screws to assemble it does not tighten. Do not recommend for the mini iPad.

    An accident waiting to happen

    • Written by from Carlisle

    Good points
    1 It looks ok
    Bad points
1 Setup is a nightmare. Took ages to position the back support correctly. Screws are fiddly.
2 You lose the use of your lightning connector as it effectively becomes part of the stand.
3 It's only held in place by the width of the lightning connector. So if you knock it by mistake you may well damage your phone as it'll probably pop off and may well break the connector or worse.
4 As the connection between phone and stand is so flimsy, I wouldn't advise using the phone on the stand.
5 It only works in the upright position, which means it's useless for watching films; one of the main uses of such a stand.

Overall, a good idea very poorly executed.

    Unusable, impractical, junk

    • Written by from Wheatley

Bought this for my bedside stand instead of the standard holder, and I regret it. My phone (iPhone 5s) perches awkwardly, you have to take the stand apart to modify the stand element if you want to put your iPad mini on it instead, and when the stand moves the plastic bottom that holds the wire neatly in pops off and the stand becomes more unstable (and untidy) still. Finally, it is so light-weight that when you pick your iPhone off the stand, the whole stand comes with your phone - so you need two hands and a wrenching action to detach your phone to take it away. In short, style, but zero ergonomics.

Not a fan. Inhibits incoming calls

    • Written by from Leesburg

Of course I love the form factor on this product, but the number one reason I can't use it: its aluminum construction seems to block incoming calls. I will randomly get voicemail alerts within 30-60 seconds of pulling my iPhone off the stand.

iPhone on the stand: 1 reception bar and no incoming calls. iPhone off the stand (and just laying on my desk): 3-4 reception bars and incoming calls come through just fine.

Can it be used with the iphone case on.

    • Written by from MOSMAN PARK

I have purchased many docking stations before, to find I needed to remove the case off to charge. I currently have a clear thin case, yet I do not want to remove it very time I want to dock my phone. Cn you advise if this is the case.

Be careful -- doesn't work with 6' APPLE cable

    • Written by from Vancouver

I laid out $35 for Apple's own 6' foot cable because they said this works "exclusively with the Apple Lightning cable". What they don't tell you is that it only works with the 3' cable!! The 3' cable is a little skinnier and the tolerances on this stand are incredibly tight.

By using a bigger hammer I got it put together -- but assembly is not for the fainthearted.

And, like several of the other reviewers have noted, it really is a little tippy for my iPad Mini.

I guess i had much higher expectations for this product than what it was meant to deliver. Disregarding that however I think it still has a number of problems:

    1) You have to construct the product yourself with an allen key - this is pretty fiddly
    2) You have to use an official Apple lightning cable so effectively this costs another $20 to $40 dollars.
    3) The cable also gets chewed up when you try to shove it into the toothed groove...where it never actually properly fits. There is an incredibly flimsy piece of plastic that is supposed to cover this - not that that matters since in my model the cable has never fit properly in the groove and thus the cable sticks randomly out the side. (I just read another review that says the model only works with the 1.2m Apple cable - I used the 2m Apple one)
    4) I had imagined that you could easily adjust the height of the stand to fit other products - not really. You have to pull out your allen key again to make any changes and maybe even swap out one of the three different lightning cable adapters provided. My mistake I guess.

All in all - a big disappointment. Putting aside the effective lack of adjustability the end result is a flimsy, rickety product thats close to useless. Maybe i just got a bad model since others seem perfectly happy with theirs but there you go.

    Assmebly Required!

    • Written by from Eugene

This item was very disappointing. If you read the fine print and make certain assumptions from what is in the package you can divine that it needs assembly but frankly assembly would not be necessary except that they cheat you of a cord for charging. Seriously! Cables that come with Apple iphone are way to short for the advertised use. In addition, I would not have been capable of putting these small parts together because of a neurological disease. I had to take it to a friend to have it put together. Really for $35 this was seriously not worth the headache and it doesn't look THAT good and lacks flexibility because of the requirement to use short charging cords.

Most disappointing! - Do not buy!

    • Written by from Ely

The worst product I've ever bought at an Apple Store since 1999. The flimsy cheap plastic lid in the bottom needed to be taped shut by me in order to keep it in place. After three days using it on my desk at work the (not supplied) original Apple charging cable has been damaged by a sharp edge at the rear of the stand. What now?... Buy a new charing cable twice a month? This HiRise is a 'HiCost' stand with several flaws. Do not buy... Zero Stars...
