DO NOT buy this as a bedside alarm dock

    • Written by from Hobart

As others have pointed out, this unit turns off after 10 minutes of no use. This means that if you use your iPhone as an alarm while docked, the iPhone feeds the alarm/music in to the JBL speaker, but the unit doesn't turn on to power the speaker. So you end up with no sound.

I'm very irritated that Apple sells a product that doesn't provide obvious and basic functionality. Apple needs to add a warning message to its store web page for this unit.

Disappointed that it shuts off...useless for alarm

    • Written by from Canyon Country

I purchased this unit in hopes that it would charge my phone and I could use it to wake up to music using the iHome app that fades in the music gradually as an alarm. Well, come to find out that if it doesn't have any sound coming into it, it shuts off after a short while. First it goes into "standby" mode, and then it totally shuts off. So of course I didn't hear my alarm. Looked on the JBL website, and it says "Please note that after 10 minutes of no audio, OnBeat Micro goes into Standby (5 minutes on batteries). After 30 minutes, it goes into full OFF. While it is in Standby, it will revert to ON status when it receives an audio signal, either from a docked component, from the analog AUX input or the USB input. From full OFF, it no longer wakes up automatically, but can only be turned ON again with the round Power Button. The reason for this is EuP regulations, which require products to go into automatic standby to save energy. We are sorry about any inconvenience caused by this." Darn. I was really hoping it would work as an alarm to wake up to.

Sounds Great bar One Minor Irritation!

    • Written by from DERBY

I was lucky enough to receive one of these for Christmas 2013. It's a convenient way to charge my iPhone whilst listening to my music. Playback is crisp and clear; I often find myself having to turn the volume down such is the impressive power of this portable unit!

My only bugbear is that sometimes it'll go into standby mode randomly meaning I have to turn the speaker unit back on to continue where my playlist left off.

However, this is only a minor irritation. If you are looking for a portable speaker dock for your iPhone 5 then I can thoroughly recommend this product.

Who wants to take case off!!??

    • Written by from Albuquerque

You have to remove even a slim case to dock it every time, how annoying, then put case back on. I have a case that does not come off easy and this is huge pain in the neck. Obviously the engineers were fast asleep when designing this.
Extremely Poor design, they should send free extenders to everyone. Who cares about sound if convenience is terrible.

    Speaker Sleeps

    • Written by from San Antonio

I want to use the JBL speaker for presentations as I have with many other JBL generations. This one fits the iphone 5 BUT sometimes when I pause a song and want to go back and play a new one, often times I can't get it to play. Yes, sometimes I turn it back on and wait. It turns itself off. Is there any way to stop this thing from turning off. Then it forgets the volume so my perfectly edited sound bit is missed, and I am looking like a fool. Pushing, waiting, hoping. Too big. Plug way to big. A big disappointment. I wouldn't get this one.

    Some flaws and POOR support.

    • Written by from Ascot

First up, as a simple speaker it's great. No complaints.

However, I bought this as a dock to put by my bed so I can wake up to music/radio/alarm/whatever and it does not work in this way. If the speaker doesn't detect any audio coming from the device for ten minutes, it turns itself on and then doesn't wake up when the audio does come out.

Despite contacting JBL three times on this, suggesting they may wish to put some from of "wake up" functionality in it, or put in an override to stay on, they have failed to adequately respond on each occasion. NOT what I would have expected from a company like JBL.

And that's what really rankles - not that I bought something that doesn't do what I want it to. That's my problem really - it's sold as a speaker and it does that very well. It's that I expected a better customer service experience from what I thought was a decent brand.

remarkable sound from such a small sound dock

    • Written by from SAN DIEGO

I have run this only on battery power(4 AAA's) and am very happy with both the volume and fidelity. But the portability is the best feature for me. One thing I hadn't foreseen was the impossibility of connecting to the Lightning jack when using an iPod protective case.I had to remove the case to use the OnBeat Dock since the case partially interfered with the full connection. Getting that case off took some hand tools and a lot of patience. Some other cases may not present the same problem or be easily removed; but with the small dimensions of the connector even a case cover only 1/16th of an inch surrounding the lightning port lay be too much.

What a brilliant piece of kit. Superb sound from such a compact item and so portable. Works from 4 x AAA batteries lasting about 5 hours and also from the mains. It also charges the iphone when plugged into the wall socket. Mutes music when a call or text arrives so you never miss any of those important messages. V impressed.

The best portable Lightning speaker yet!

    • Written by from Petaling Jaya

Now this is what I call a great portable speaker, and best of all, it's Lightning compatible!

JBL's OnBeat Micro is perfect for those of us using the iPhone 5, new iPod touch, or iPod nano, thanks to the Lightning cradle. Those of us who are left out need not fret as we can still connect our devices using the aux slot or USB. But the truly defining feature of these speakers is the amazing sound that can fill up an entire large room, something that I find lacking in many other portable speakers!

I personally recommend these superb speakers to anyone of us owning the latest Apple products. Two thumbs up!

Disappointed that I cannot use with alarm clock apps

    • Written by from Toronto

I purchased this unit so I could charge my iPhone5 overnight and wake up to my iTunes music library in the morning. Trouble is that the unit shuts down after a period of idle time and doesn't "wake up" when the alarm goes off on the iPhone. Not only that, the iPhone thinks the speakers are "active", sends sound to the unit but no sound comes out ... So I sleep through my alarm. The docking unit is ok for charging and for listening to music BEFORE I go to sleep but that is not what I thought I bought so then the price tag does not appear so reasonable. Guess I'll have to wait for the other suppliers to come out with their docking stations for iPhone5.

Nice but SleepMachine App won't run all night

I don't know if it's the app or the dock. App works fine just plugged into the wall but after an hour or so on the OnBeat Dock it cuts off

Awsome sound from such a small device

    • Written by from Tonawanda

This turned out to be perfect for my needs. The sound truely is awsome for it's compact size. My phone fits the Lightning Connector w/ the cover on w/ room to spare. I prefer using the usb so i can change my music w/out getting up to do so. I guess you could say a wireless connection would be nice for this, but for the money I can live w/out it.
The speaker is loud, clear and full sound!
I've read that it shuts off after some time, but i've had pandora on for more than 6 hrs w/out it shutting off.
    I couldn't be happier w/ this speaker!

    Looks good, sounds good

    • Written by from Webster

I bought this item at the Apple Store because I wanted to make sure that it would work with the case that I have on my iPhone. It did. I would say that if you have a case that is open on the bottom it will work. Cases that wrap around the bottom with holes for the cable and perforations for the speaker and mic will probably not work.

It does sound good and its nice that there is a USB port in the back so that I can also charge my work (Android) phone.

Its so compact that I may take it with me when I travel.

The sound is amazing. The price is great. It's compact and perfect for every day use and if you read the reviews that say dont buy bc iPhone cases dont let the connector work....then youre not so smart. My case works just fine with it. There are plenty of cases out there that allow you to use this great speaker dock. Im very happy with my purchase!

JBL speaker no good for iPhone 5

    • Written by from Discovery Bay

I had a JBL speaker dock for my iPhone 3/4 and was really please with it, which is why I went for this one, but the iPhone 5 version with lightning connector does not do the job it is designed for.

Clearly I am not intending to remove the case or bumper from my iPhone every time I want to listen to music or charge my phone, which is the only way you can get it to fit! I wanted to give this product no stars, but this system wouldn't let me do that, so it got a reluctant 1.

This product is not fit for purpose and needs an urgent upgrade.

My recommendation - don't buy it.

    The case issue ...

    • Written by from Fairfax

Clearly, JBL or APPLE needs to make a lightning extender available so this nice little device (and many others) can be used without having to remove the protective case. Come on, guys!

    lousy connection

    • Written by from Lyndon Station

I've tried two of these speaker docks, and both had lousy lightning connectors. The male connector on the dock had a loose fit, so the device did not work when docked. However, a lightning-USB cord, which fit into the iPod Touch 5 snugly, worked well.

No cases allowed but good sound

    • Written by from San Jose

I've been very patiently waiting for a new speaker dock to replace the one in my bedroom since I've upgraded to the iPhone 5 but I'm afraid I'm going to have to wait a bit longer. I liked the package, the sound and the overall design but one thing that I can't live with is the fact that my phone won't fit while the case is still on. I have a relatively thin case and the connector won't engage at all no matter how hard I try. Too bad as I had high hopes for this dock so it's going back to the store.
