    Exceeded My Expectations

    • Written by from Albuquerque

I purchased these ahead of a house party we were having and although expensive, I am more than pleased with them! It was definitely a conversation piece, and the lights really set the mood whether we wanted to have fun or just relax. The stock app is fun to play with, but I came across an app called Goldee that controls and changes the color schemes dynamically. They have different themes, such as 'concentrate', 'relax', 'romantic', and the lights will subtly change colors from one to the other. It really transforms the room!

It works flawlessly as well. As much as I've played with these lights, turned them off and on, changed colors, etc., I have not experienced any flaws in their operation. As long as my wifi is running, my lights can be controlled with my phone.

My wife was a little adverse to the lights at first because you control them from your phone, but I explained to her she can turn the lightswitch off and on and it will behave like any normal lightbulb. I got her the app on her phone as well, and she can control and play with them too!

    Lighting I would recommend.

    • Written by from Austin

I've owned this starter pack for over a year now and I can confidently say that I would recommend this lighting to any of my buddies. I've used it for everyday use in my bedroom and while it has its quirks I'll list, it has been the best companion.

First quirk is that if the power goes off the light come on full brightness when power is restored which is frustrating during some storms at night. Second is the companion app is much improved over when I first had it but its still not perfect with instant on but that might apse be due to my bridge being down stairs with the router.

Other than those two issues that pop up rarely I've used these for at least a year if not longer and I have used them every single day in my bedroom and I've loved having the ability to control the lighting for my mood and controlling the brightness depending on my task at hand. Philips keeps up with the app on a fairly regular basis adding new features and fixing bugs which is nice to have continued support. The only feature I don't use is the geo location because I'd rather not have my lights turn on when I arrive home during the day which its not hard to pull out my phone.

Low lights not so low. Timers Fail.

    • Written by from RENO

I've got 4 bulbs, two down lights and two blooms. I'd like to change the lighting every hour with a 9 minute fade. Too much to ask. There are always different bulbs that go out night-after-night instead of fading to the next scene. Sometimes they all go out. Sometimes this one or that one, I'll never know which will malfunction. When I tap the icon for what's supposed to be on, they all come on as expected, so it's not that the scene is not configured correctly. Checked and re-checked and all the timers are in place, all the bulbs selected for every day of the week. If it is something I'm doing wrong, someone needs to build a much better interface, but doesn't seem like an OE [operator error] at this point.

I'd like some really low light for movie night on the order of low movie theater red lights to keep the pupil engaged. Can't get them low enough and when you try **BAM** they go out. Same when they come on. You can set a 9 minute fade-in all you want, the lights will noticeably bang on. Pretty irritating when you are trying for a pleasantly subtle fade-in.

    WORTH IT

    • Written by from Quincy

At first I was very reluctant to buy these, maybe even after the first week. But after owning them for months I've grown to absolutely love them. The app is very simple, and with the Ambify app the lights go to your music quite well. I am looking to upgrade with an LED strip sometime soon, but if you are a gadget person these lights are a MUST HAVE. I can't even stand my bedroom light at night anymore, these set the perfect mood for any feeling.

Philips hue bulb/lamp and bridge are not reliable

    • Written by from Noordwijkerhout

I have the Philips Hue for more than 6 months, overall the Hue bridge works fine but sometimes some of the lamps suddely shine brighter or does not go on at all. When a timer is set, mostly the lamps go on as set. But sometimes not all lamps (from a defined scene) gets on or some lamps are not turned off.

I tried everything but this Philips Hue bridge system is not reliable.

A good idea, but really lacks whats promised

    • Written by from vanløse

I've had this kit for a couple of weeks now, and even though im loving the ease of changing colours and to damp the lights, there is a few things that really dull..

Firstoff the colours. This is no living colors, it only does like 4-5 colours really well. Green is like none existing and the hue saturation does little compared to the colour scale.

Second, the software... Its not bad, but its not particularely good either. I think that most people know that there is alot of possibilities with these lights, unfortunatly philips doesnt really take the effort to utilize this properly.

Last is a quiet hum comming from these bulps, and turning them of through the software actually only makes its worse.. The hum is not as bad as experienced from my living colors lamp so i can live with it..

The price should match a somehow better product, hopefully we will se a hue .2 doing these things better in the future

    Love them. Hate them.

    • Written by from MARIETTA

We have a love-hate relationship with our Hue system. The lights themselves (4 Hues plus a Bloom)-love them. Even my tech-averse wife likes what we can do with light "scenes." Ever the gadget freak, I enjoy the automation tricks via IFTTT. On the other hand, I loath the "bridge." It's frustratingly unreliable. Despite being located in an adjacent room, and being connected to the network via Ethernet cable, it frequently looses touch with the Hues. Once a week I find I need to reboot the Bridge. Today, being a holiday, I turned off last night the "morning alarm" that turns up 3 lights in our bedroom at 5:45 AM. One light, the one nearest my wife's side of the bed, did not get the memo. Not the first time this has happened I might add. Two weeks ago, all the lights went on strike, and did not wake us. Hopefully, Philips will work out the networking kinks. Until then, expect some annoyances.

    Awesome Product

Never thought that lights would have such an impact. Coupled with IFTTT, this product rocks, especially after the latest updates, which improved some nagging issues like bulb startup. The update process can be a bit fiddly, but it works.

FANTASTIC product that has already come a long way

    • Written by from Fleet

The Philips Hue lighting system is a great piece of kit. Yes, it is costly, but the second you have it you'll realise it was money well spent.

The system was very easy to set up. I have very unreliable wifi and this is the one wifi based system in my house that has never cut out or disconnected. It is incredible how having slightly different hues of lighting can affect your mood or energy so much.

The bulbs can go very bright, and creating setups to your preference is simple. A lot of the previous reviews here are based on the old app when it was still really in development. Since the new app update things are much more simple and intuitive. Once you start looking into things there are also great capabilities. For example:

    - Each morning I have it set so my bedroom lights come on slowly instead of my alarm, and on a setting that reflects daylight, so I wake up relaxed.

    - I had a party recently and I downloaded one of the many available third party apps, enabling my lights to change in time to the music. Searching "hue" on the App Store shows a huge variety of these apps.

    - I use the app "If This Then That" to create a series of rules, for example if it is going to rain my lights flash blue. If I leave my house the lights turn off behind me automatically. When it gets dark outside they come on automatically, using the sunset data from the weather app.

Your home will instantly feel advanced and simple with these. It is great being able to set such a variety of moods from your iPhone. A must buy!

Slick, easy-to-use, but not a true RGB bulb

    • Written by from Santa Clara

I really liked Hue's easy smartphone control and reliable wireless operation. The bulbs were a disappointment to me because they are optimized for generating white light in different color temperatures. The result is washed-out very dim greens and blues rather than the bright saturated light in any color that a true RGB bulb would generate. However, reds are strong, and the white looks good and does warm and cool color temperatures perfectly, and as I mentioned before, the dimming, iOS app and wireless operation are very nice.

Great product. App is pretty powerful, despite what "they" say.

    • Written by from San Francisco

I bought Hue about four weeks ago. I figured I would wait a month before writing a review to see if there might be any stability issues. Everything has worked pretty much as well as the day I set the system up.

Based on the reviews out there that I read before I bought my starter pack, I thought that my 2 cents worth might help those thinking of buying. I have so far been very impressed with this product. Like others here I did have some problems setting Hue up, but nothing that couldn’t be solved with a search of a forum and about half an hour. As mentioned in some other reviews, I was unable to access the alarm feature in the Philips app and got a message that the firmware on the bridge needed updating, yet the settings menu in the app showed the software was up to date. A forum post suggested disconnecting the power to the bridge and reconnecting after updating the iOS app and the bridge then updated automatically and everything worked fine after that. Initially I also had some lights showing off or out of range but that problem seems to have sorted itself out once the bulbs found each other. I understand that Hue bulbs create a mesh network so you only need one light in range of the wifi network and other bulbs will relay the signal to each other.

There has been a lot of criticism of the Philips app which is in some ways justified, but I think is a little overwrought. Yes the user interface and user experience leave a lot to be desired, but think of what you are asking from the app. Most apps do one or two things and that’s it. Like catapulting an angry bird at a target, or telling you which way is north and if your desk is level, or does a bunch of things in a linear fashion. But think for a minute what you are asking the hue app to do. It can control up to 50 lights in any permutation or combination, in brightness settings of 1 to 100, in any one of 16 million colors (OK, realistically about oh, 10 distinguishable colors). I don’t really remember my high school statistics, but that is a lot of possible combinations - billions and billions? Added to which, you can set timers, alarms, use the app remotely if you set up an account on the Hue website, and control the lights via ifttt.com. All of which I have done with relative ease.

OK, the app is not perfect, but take a few hours to determine its logic, patterns and functions and you will realize how powerful this set up is. I didn't give Hue five stars simply because individual bulbs are currently too expensive for me to consider buying enough bulbs to create a comprehensive lighting system in my home.

    Amazing Product!

    • Written by from San Jose

This is one of my favorite tech items. Setting up the lights just took a few minutes. The possibilities for this are endless. It is an expensive item, but the electrical savings will pay for itself down the road. You can have a lot of fun while reducing your carbon footprint. :-)

There are plenty of third-party apps that work great with the Hue lights. My favorite right now is "Hue Lights." If you are a techie, you can also use the Hue API to create limitless schedules, events, and light shows from your own server.

A lot of people posted YouTube videos, so you can see these in action. The Hue Lightstrips are a great addition to the Starter Pack. They can really transform a room!

    Excellent Design!!!

I purchased the Disney Storytime Light and the Light Strip plus the Bulbs all together. Everything works as expected.

For some reason I mistakenly thought that the Bridge itself can use Wifi.. and it does have a wifi symbol on the unit, but there seems to be no configuration tool to attach it to Wifi... so I'm still using ethernet cable. I would rather have it use Wifi though.

Took me 10mins to setup all units. Excellent if you guys purchase the $3 app called Hue Disco if you want the Philips bulbs to help with coloring your home party.

    Good hardware, Beta level software

    • Written by from Kingston Upon Thames

Good light intensity, nice colours. No blues as another reviewer mentioned. The closer to blue you can get with the standard bulbs is a blueish violet. Better blue comes from the Bloom light.

The software is high on fluffy and low on actual basic functions. I bought the Hue system expecting a Sonos type experience, but you will have to wait for future update (I hope) for a proper experience.

Issues I have with the software:
    - no grouping by rooms. You can setup profiles that would be only valid for one room, but the process could be so much easier with grouping options. Frankly I can't understand why this has not been included in the 1.0 version.
    - The extra lamp added (a Bloom for me) did not belong at the same level as the other lamps. All profiles needed to be manually visited on each control devices (iPhones, iPad) to add the new lamp.
    - the lamps may have 16 millions colours, but the fidelity of the colour reproduction is not great.
    - Not easy to simply turn one one lamp at the intensity and colour you want.
    - Remove a lamp. Why should this be a complicated process that remove all your settings?

So, great concept but the usability is poor due to poor software. 4 stars for the hardware, and 1 star for the software. Total 2 stars because it is too expensive for an unfinished product.

Good but price could be a little bit less

    • Written by from OULU

I'm quite happy of this starter set. Works as expecting and actually not so big price in my situation. I bought these mainly for dimming capability and daylight spectrum. I have no dimmer so other alternative would have been change dimmers and buy dimmable led daylight spectrum lights.
Few thing I like to see in next version.
    - If I shut down lights from switch it does not remember my previous settings. Should at keast able to chose one setting that comes directly after switching light again.
    - Maximum brightness could be a little bit better but these are already very usable to be primary lights.
    - I'd like to be able to adjust based on color temperature
Great product, will buy more when price will drop.
