Save your money. Great idea but bad product with bad support

    • Written by from Phoenix

I bought 29 of these after I was impressed with the starter kit. Then, I randomly lose a connection to a bulb, which is a huge hassle to resurrect. Resurrection is only sometimes successful after hours of effort. I'm a tech enthusiast and an Electrical Engineer with all the latest gizmos and gadgets, so I love experimenting with technology. Until I've decided that it is a fail. And THIS is a fail. Tech and product support with Philips is virtually nonexistent. I feel foolish for having spent so much money on this stuff - but I'm like a kid in a candy store with no spending limit.....I should have listened to my very level headed wife and not bothered with the Philips products.

They are all going into the recycle bin and I'm going to just stick with simple manual light switches from now on. I'm lucky I can affford to throw out $1500 worth of Philips Hue lights without any stress! Lesson learned! My advice: don't bother and save your money.

I have nothing but good to say

    • Written by from Lehi

I own 28 of these lights so what I am going to review comes from experience. I have them in my home to create wonderful lighting that is soft not harsh. I can choose warm for the evening and colors of red and green for Christmas. I have actually (successfully) put them in the eves of my home and outdoor home lights with no problems even at sub zero temps. I push a button and I can change the front of the home to Halloween, Christmas, St. Patricks, or Fourth of July. I have the home wake up when I come home with geo sensing and turn off when I leave. I have had zero problems but I will say that I have very high end tech stuff. I use the Apple Airport Time Capsule and that branches off to a business class 24 port high capacity router that feeds the home to each room of the home. It just works and is really fun. If you are having trouble your success is only as good as your weakest link. Have a good up to date router and place the Hue hub central to location of the lights.

    Brilliant Product!

    • Written by from Chesterfield

Philips Hue is the possibly the best lighting products I own! The bulb itself is not out of the ordinary, neither is it tacky. It is easy to set up with the ethernet cable included however the bridge cannot connect wirelessly to the router which may be a downside for some people but the signal can reach anywhere where your wi-fi signal can. The app's user interface is great and does not over complicate things, and lets you change colour, set scenes, alarms and timers even when your not home! Another issue however is the rendering of green, which seems to be more of a white, but the rest of the colours are great, and it even produces great white light, brighter than my existing bulbs. Overall it is a great product but as all things do - has downsides, and the cost is a little expensive but definitely worth it.

    Stay away from it!!

    • Written by from St. Louis

They don't work... Some lights connect some don't. They turn on and off randomly. Worst of all as the complaints start to pile up Philips seems not to care. No updates, no ideas, no fixes, just don't care. They got us to drop the cash, know they're on to the next disaster. I've got 8 bulbs to sell... Cheap!

    Flawless~!

    • Written by from Hingham

I don't know how many of these complaints are about operator error, but this thing works flawlessly. It took less than three minutes from taking it out of the box to having fun with it, and it's an awful lot of fun. I've put it in my office, where I can very quickly set different moods with these lights. I run it from my iPhone, and it all works exactly as advertised. I've already bought some extra bulbs, and I'm probably going to get another whole hub started as well. Highly recommended ~!

Great Concept, Terrible Software, Very Erratic Operation

    • Written by from Los Angeles

Great concept and beautiful - when it works - which is unfortunately quite rare. The lamps themselves are fine, but the bridge that controls them is very erratic and more often than not loses contact with the lamps. Thus you can't control the lamps or even turn them on remotely. Once the bridge is lost, the lamps become useless. Technical support is very nice but not especially effective in solving ongoing problems. They admit that the TAP control generally does not work and that they are frustrated waiting for software updates that will solve the many problems with the system. My system has stopped working entirely and tech support can't suggest anything further until a software update occurs and there is no schedule to do that. I have given up on hue and suggest that prospective purchasers wait until the system is perfected.

If I had only purchased HUE first (and not wasted $ on Lifx)

    • Written by from San Jose

I am very pleased with my Hue starter kit. My only regret is that I wasted a ton of money purchasing Lifx bulbs prior to purchasing a Hue starter pack. Hue is everything that Lifx promised to be and unfortunately, Lifx failed to deliver! I use one Hue bulb on the porch, and have an "alarm" set for the bulb to turn on around dusk and turn off at dawn. In addition, I have the other two bulbs in my living room, which we use on a variety of settings depending on the activity (e.g., Relaxation mode, dimmed for movie night, reading mode, etc). I have the bulbs set up so that if it is after dark and the bulbs are not already on, they detect my arrival within the neighborhood and turn on the lights at home. With regard to setup, I had no difficulty setting up the bulbs and so far (after several months of use) I have not had any issues. In the future, I will purchase bulbs for other parts of the house as well. Thank you Hue!

Great idea but needs work as some shortcomings and bugs.

    • Written by from London

Hue is great in principle, letting me tailor the lighting in my house in colour and brightness, plus control it from an app. The system was easy to setup and get going, plugging the bridge into my router and following the steps on the app. The bulbs are nicely built and quite bright. Two light my lounge in the evenings nicely.

    APP:
The controller app is garish in colour and needs to be improved, but overall it does the job. You get brightness and colour controls, though the latter are hard to use on an iphone's small screen, especially if you have lots of bulbs.

A big focus in the app seems to be on picking colours from photos, but this feels gimmicky. I can't think of many occasions where I want my lounge the colours of photos I've taken.

Programming presets is easy enough, though the app could be more intuitive here too. I still don't understand the difference between 'scenes' and 'light recipes' - seems a needless distinction. It's nice to have a slider to control the overall brightness of the scenes I have created though.

The timer feature is great - it's swish to be able to fade a preset scene up over say 30 minutes in the evening. Having the app know when it was getting dark would be even better and would save me needing to adjust the timer every few weeks. This is actually something I thought I could do with the geofencing feature (lights coming on when you are near home) but sadly this doesn't work in practice for 2 reasons.

Firstly because I want my lights to only come on when it's dark, and to do this you have to click the "sunset" option. But the apps determination of sunset can be quite different to the light levels outside.More importantly it doesn't take into account if I am already home or not. So I can have my lights turn on if I approach the house and it's dark, but if I am already home and then it gets dark the lights don't come on. This is because I've not crossed the geofence .

Finally it's a bit of a pain to setup different rooms. E.g. if I want to go in the bedroom, I have to either press a few clicks to get to the bedroom slider which is a pain, or make 2 scenes such as "lounge on bedroom on" and "lounge on bedroom off". With more rooms you need more permutations of scenes which gets confusing. Other 3rd party apps try and overcome this with the concept of rooms, but I've not found one I like yet.

    ISSUES:
I've had numerous issues with the system after 3-4 months use, which along with the high price and clunky app is the reasoning for the 3 stars.

One big problem is that 2 of my 3 bulbs emit an irritating high pitched whine when turned off. It's loud enough that you can hear them from across the room. I'm being sent replacements, but reading the forums it looks like people often get sent more noisy bulbs in return.

Also I have had the system lose 2 lamps. I've come home to find they've turned on by themselves to strange colours and show as not contactable in the app. I can search and add them back in, but they then show as new additional lamps, so my presets don't use them. Plus it leaves the old 'lost' bulbs in the app which is a pain as they get in the way. The only way to clear them out is to reset the whole system from the bridge, at which point you lose all your presets / alarms / settings... everything.

So overall, nice idea, but for the price needs improvement.

    Amazing! Worth every dollar!

    • Written by from Toronto

I actually held off buying Philips Hue due to the price. But after realizing that the bulbs last beyond a decade and that they actually do more than just light (it can be art, design, a conversation piece, etc - for those who take pride in having a nice home) your home. I bought the starter pack recently and a few of the light strips and other accessories... I had everything setup in under 30 minutes flawlessly, including linking to the iOS apps. I must say, I love these lights. Its effortless to use, creates amazing colours and scenes in your home; can help you relax after work or make a movie or music more exciting with connected lights. I love waking up to the sunrise scene in my bedroom, just one of many, many uses.

If you do care about having a nice home and lighting plays a big part of that, I'd completely and totally recommend Hue. You won't regret it. I can't wait to see what they bring out next as part of the Hue line.

Deceptive advertising, does not produce all colors

    • Written by from New York

The bulbs have very poor available color space. They won't do royal blue, powder blue or forest green. The best approximations they can come up with are violet and lime green. White light is good, but there are cheaper alternatives on the market for that. I did not encounter loss of connection or other technical issues like those reported by many posters, but again I returned the product immediately. As far as I am concerned if I invest 400$ in 6 RGB bulbs they should have perfect color mapping and all the software issues should have been worked out.

    Great but don't buy yet

    • Written by from SLIDELL

Don't buy Hue Bulbs just yet. You will love them, but then they may develop a problem with no solution and you will have an expensive system that ultimately functions only as a much less expensive light bulb:

Bought the Starter Pack a few weeks ago and liked it so much I bought extra bulbs at about $50 ea. A few days ago, my wife had trouble controlling the bulb on her night stand. Yesterday I had trouble controlling all lights on my iPhone and today, none of the lights were controllable from iPhones. They will switch on from the socket, but only at maximum intensity and white color.

Problem is in the Bridge not recognizing the internet. Checked all the connections, disconnected and reconnected power, got a new LAN cable, tried different working LAN slots for other devices - problem NOT solved.

Researched it on the internet and found this is an ongoing problem since February 2013 (and increasing in number as the year progressed) with little support and no solution from company to date, other than what I outlined above that did not work today. Should have read this before I bought - but it showed up when I Googled 'Phillips Hue Bridge Problems'. Luckily I bought the Starter Kit at the Apple Store less than 30 days ago and get some of my money back. However the other 2 bulbs are mine to keep. They function pretty decently as regular bulbs (but $50 ones!!!) Luckily due to the cost, I did not do the whole house but had planned to. They will remind me to research new technology better before I buy.

    Not necessary, but absolutely cool!

    • Written by from Emmen

The Philips Hue bulbs are definitely not necessary, but absolutely cool. If you don't mind spending some extra money on light bulbs, buy these. They work very well, the app works nice, and with the Hue Tap that is coming out soon it will even be better! The different scenes really bring lighting to the next level. I'm really into gadgets, and this is the best i've bought in a while. I'm looking forward to testing them in the winter and use the timer for waking up with a sunrise.

Why spend just a few bucks less to get lights you can turn off remotely... but no colors or anything. Seriously. For 150 you can get three remote controllable outlets. but for 199 you get endless possibilities. For instant mood lighting these can't be beat. Ignore any bad reviews. They are easy to set up and there are plenty of good apps out there that are better than the free Philips one. I use one called Hue+ and could not be happier. I have preset modes for reading, movie watching, normal use and 'mood'.

    Just wonderful!

    • Written by from ROSEMERE

Hue is a real winner! I have a total of 4 bulbs, 1 spotlight a 1 strip, and I can wait for the GU10 items to be on the north american market. So far, I love the results: colours are crisp, beautiful, and so easy to manage.

Having multiple bulbs might be a bit tricky to manage on the apps as they overlap and they don't have a logical order (only the order in which they were linked to the Hue bridge). But this is minor compared to the results obtained.

The only problem I see (and I hope that Philips could find a solution) is that after a power outage, all the lights come back on... Since I have a few power outages in my area once in a while, all my lamps can turn on in the middle of the night... A "power outage" detection system could be nice, e.g. after the outage, the lamps are brought back at their previous state.

I got this in Decemeber 2013, and it was hard to set up. I had a ton of issues. A few months later, this thing won't work. And, there's no support online. Avoid this product - it makes lighting way too complicated. Keep it simple!

Best 'Smart Home' Product Out There

    • Written by from Rohnert Park

We purchased the Philips Hue Starter Pack and fell in love! We connected them in our living room and found that these bulbs allow us to set the mood, dim the lights, turn off before bed, etc. all from our iPhone. A few months later I have them in almost every room of the house.

This technology has really allowed us to turn our home into a smart home! Albeit, they are a bit pricey, but you are paying for convenience and so much more. The Hue App has also come a long way and offers much more than it did upon initial release. We also love the additional apps that control our Hue bulbs, such as Goldee and IFTTT.

If you have $200, go grab a starter pack and play around. Well worth it!
