Printer is amazingly easy to setup with your wifi. No need to connect it to computer via cable like with some other devices and works absolutely amazing with air print when using your iPhone or iPad. My iMac and Macbook Air recognised printer straight away. Didn't need to install any software at all, just clicked "Print" and printer was already available on a list.

Touch Screen interface is nice, easy in use and really responsive. User Interface was designed in a right way.

    Perfect product for your home.

    Don't ever buy this printer

    • Written by from Cincinnati

The printer doesn't work with wifi at college. it won't set up so i called HP and asked for their help and they told me to get a USB cord which isn't included so i would have to buy one, or that i need to get my own wifi. They blamed apple saying that it is their fault for "not advising buyers to have their own wifi". The printer is honestly the worst investment i have ever made. Seriously, buy any other brand except HP because they are terrible.

I have this as a brand new unit and also an HP Envy air printer which my wife bought . Neither are much good. When I set them up they worked fine for a few hours. But after that I have to go and switch off my BT router and then reboot to get them to connect wirelessly. This is in a household with two laptops, two iPads, two iPhones and an Internet TV which all connect via the same router without problems. I have an old HP 2600 series printer which is cable connected and so I use this as it NEVER lets me down. HP air printers are rubbish. Wouldn't buy another!

    Utter rubbish

    • Written by from Hillarys

I have never encountered such a piece of junk in all my life. Set up is confusing - it insists on going wireless which is results in an incomplete set up. And it scans but it doesn't produce an image. Its connected by cable and says it can't find my iMac. Never buying HP again.

    So easy

    • Written by from Bunbury

Ive not had a printer for several years, the last time I tried to configure one it drove me mad, an absolute nightmare which is one of the reasons I have gone so long without one,
I plugged this in and the little mobile phone type panel on the front came up with all the instructions and even little demo movies an every step - from inserting the ink cartridges to aligning the print head - SIMPLE!
In no time I had a wireless connection to my desktop and mu I-pad as well as my macbook pro.
Had I have known it was THIS easy I would have got one tears ago.
Print quality is remarkable and it will scan and photocopy as well as print on BOTH sides of the paper

    Doesn´t print black

    • Written by from Royal Leamington Spa

This is a known issue by HP on their support forum just look for it on the internet.
No recall for this rubbish printer and only advise from HP is to clean print heads to try and make it work , and when you empty your cartridges from doing it over and over to try to get it to print black, just go and buy some more expensive HP spare cartridges !!!
Just not worth it, lucky me got it for free with my new iMac.

Buy other model / make but not the 5520 !!!

    Breaks IPv4 network

    • Written by from Sheffield

This printer is good, cheap and worked quite well once I figured out how to stop it bringing down my internet connection ever few minutes.

It appears that the printer sends a malformed DNS request packet, which causes my router to crash and reboot. This was just after I switched supplier and I ended up spending weeks chasing the 'connection issues' with them only to find out it was this printer.

Eventually I found I could work around it by running the printer in IPV6 mode only. Things seemed to be working ok, but then a few months ago started to get intermittent connection issues. Printer stopped halfway, iOS devices could not AirPrint to it. Eventually my OSX devices also bang having trouble maintaining a connection.

Finally it has given up. Nothing can connect to it wirelessly (unless I turn on IPv4, which is entirely useless as it breaks the internet for me). This is a known problem, HP has a ticket on it website about the issue, but to date has not released a fix/update.

    Very disappointing.

a sweet little gadget with personality

    • Written by from Tucson

A little noisy, but it doesn't seem to be hurting itself when it grinds a bit. It likes to bounce around some also, but stays on its stand. Print quality is excellent. Use a lighter bond paper, I use 20. The cartridges that come with it do not last long, but for $12 I picked up a replacement (Black which is all I need) good for 500 sheets, medium density. I use it for text, charts & music scores. For ~$100 purchase price, it's great.

To install and set up: first search YouTube for HP5520 Installation video. Then search "HP driver" and choose the 5520 and Mac. After installation, the video walks you through it, install the drivers, the hp link; the Installation process walks you through this. Then to print turn on unit and print from the computer document. Copy & Scan at the printer unit.

Nice appearance, well behaved when it's turned off. I plan to keep it.

Broke after a year or so....

    • Written by from Lower Ealrey

After only a year or so the print head stopped printing black, no way to get it repaired so off to the tip with it. Would not be so bad if I had not spent £25 on a new set on cartridges that in fact we're not needed.

Printer only ever had light usage, I would expect it to last a few years...

Had to manually connect it to all household computers by entering it's IP address which was annoying, and none of the iPhones, iPads etc will find the printer. Not sure whether it's due to lack of instructions coming in the box, or just a rubbish printer.

    Excellent Printer

It took me less than a half hour to set this excellent little engine up. I can now print wirelessly and effortlessly from my IPhone or IPad . I did not bother to connect it to my PC, it is not necessary for me! I have another HP printer that is a workhorse for my PC needs! I got this new HP printer to print photos, which it does with magnificent results

Awful Printer - Does Not Work with AirPrint

Good general printer - Horrible with cardstock

    • Written by from Bellingham

Printer works ok on regular weight paper for most ordinary printing jobs. Scanner is good. Wireless set-up no problem. But if you are trying to print a more complicated document, there are a lot of problems. The printer tends to increase the bottom margin, cutting off any text - even accounting for the lack of full-bleed and compensatory margins. If you want to use cardstock, forget it. The printer handles the paper differently no matter what settings you use. The alignment is squared up only occasionally. If you are trying to align cardstock double-sided, you are out of luck. Even if you manual feed one sheet at a time and print one-side at a time, it is very difficult to consistently get a good print. Seems the printer is designed for the person who only prints generic documents and the occasional photo, not being very concerned with quality or alignment.

    Not recommended

    • Written by from Auburn

I purchased this printer from the Apple store with my new desktop. I've had this printer for 14 months and the black ink no longer prints. HP tech offered me a reconditioned printer for $99.00 because the warranty is no longer in effect. Apple should reconsider selling products like this when the reviews indicate problems like this. Very unsatisfied with this HP product.

this is the noisiest slowest printer aI have ever known. It takes ages to think about what its going to do, then grinds out the pages before whirring and grinding its way back to sleep. Don't know what HP were thinking!

    5520 unreliable printer

    • Written by from ORACLE

Our HP 5520 printer stopped working today 15 months after it was purchased. The black cartridge stopped printing and none of the support advice on the HP site, all of which we tried repeatedly, has fixed the problem. The HP support site mentions the black printer cartridge problem over and over again on the 5520 series and on other series printers. Clearly it is an HP problem they have not addressed. The printer is cheap, but our landfills will be full of them.

Avoid if you have a sky hub router (white)

    • Written by from Downpatrick

I think this may be a great printer, if it happens to work with your router. I bought one from the apple store and tried EVERY way possible to connect the printer to my home network. Here is what I did:

    1) used the cd installation guide
    2) used the printer installation wizard
    3) used the HP website printer setup
    4) used WPS on the printer and router
    5) added the MAC address of the printer to the list of accepted MAC address on my router using the router configuration website
    6) added the printer pin using the router configuration website
    7) changed channels and the security settings on the router using the router configuration website
    8) restored the router to factory settings and did everything again
    9) restored the printer to factory settings (3 different times) and did everything again
    10) called HP technical support (4 hours of going through everything again, including giving the technician access to my computer and router settings)
    11) called Sky Technical support (1 hour of going through everything again), to rest router and confirm unequivocally that MAC address filtering was not enabled or anything else was preventing my printer from joining with the router.

The conclusion that the HP tech guy, the Sky tech guy and I came to was that this printer is simply not compatible with the Sky Hub Router (white), so please don't waste your time and money like I did, if you have a Sky Hub router (white) - which is a pretty common router in the UK!

That being said, I'm sure the printer can work brilliantly with other routers!

Connectivity with wireless devices is brilliant! Eprint function is really cool too. No problems to report so far, however it does make some really disturbing creaks and groans that make me wonder if I will have paper jam issues down the road. Hope not because I really like this printer.
