    Good in theory

I reallly wanted to like/love this contraption... and based on how many I purchased, my wallet thinks I love them.

    That's where the love ends.

Everything will work well with these devices until they roll out a new app update or a new firmware update. Then brace yourself for 15 minutes worth of work for every device you have. The 15 minutes per device will be used to reset all the settings so that you can once again access them when you're not at home

Mind you. Belkin has updated the software at least 4 times since I purchased them this fall. ('12)

Multiply that time 9 devices and 4 updates and you have the hours of frustration that have resulted from something that isn't cheap and was supposed to make my life easier.

Don't believe the other reviews listed here. They're cheerily suspicious. Check out the reviews written by publications for a better sense of this product.

Thus ends my scathing review. Just wish I'd waited to buy the new Hue light bulbs now at Apple. No wait, I did also buy them and surprisingly, they work!

    Not working as advertised

    • Written by from Del Mar

Remote access can not be enabled in a multiple router / range extended network environment. Belkin's servers require the switch(es) being bound to one router MAC for the remote access to work. Premature release of a poorly thought through and developed product. Works nicely when controlled from device that is operating on the same WiFi.

I love that I can turn my light on when I leave work so I dont come home to a dark house! You can also set it to turn on the electronic of your choice at a certain time on a certain day. Amazing! Plan on getting more! Buy now!

Great product concept but more stability needed

    • Written by from Lewes

I have 3 WeMo switches and have used them for around 3 months. The WeMo app is on 3x iPhones (2x 5's and 1x 4S) and 2x iPods (2 and 4).

He WeMo is a great concept, set up is easy and the app is nice and simple. Setting up rules is easy too (eg to activate at a certain time of day or day of week). Also the Internet (rather thang just local WiFi) is. Really neat easy to use feature.

However there is a major problem.

At least one of the three WeMo switches over the three month period i have had them goes wrong and needs manually re-booting every week. The reliability just isn't there for any remotely serious use.

Come on Belkin - get your act together! Great concept but very poor execution. You can, and must, do better.

    Cool

    • Written by from San Diego

Based on some of the other reviews, I am bracing myself for a somewhat hard time setting my 2 switches up and was very pleasantly surprised when it was a breeze -- it was literally plugging in the switches, download WeMo app from app store, find WeMo Wifi on Setting, open WeMo app. Voila! Would gladly fill my house with these switches if they are more affordable ; )

worked first time, easy to use

This switch gives complete remote control of electrical appliances. I bought this switch so I could remotely control the light in the front room so not to return to a dark house in the evening. Works perfectly and have now though of many more uses: electric blanket, slow cooker, room heater. This is a revolutionary idea and Belkin has done it right. It is a little bulky but no more than any other timer. Well done.

Sounds great but far from it.

I read the reviews of this item before buying it so I expected slight difficulty in setting up this product. I'm very tech savvy so I was up to the challenge. I purchased two switches and a motion switch. After about 2 hours I had all three up and running plus created rules within the WEMO app. After about a month Belkin released a firmware update for the switches and an update on the app. At that point I was no longer able to control my switches unless I was on my home router. (Which defeats the entire sales pitch you can check if you turned things off after you left.) I then 3 weeks ago installed a new router and after 3 weeks of trying, holding down the connect button to reset the switch and the app crashing non stop I finally got one of the switches connected to my new router. I was able to control it with the app and then I unplugged it, moved it 20 feet to the living room and it no longer works on the network. (One of the set up trouble shooting suggestions was to move it closer to the router to program and then move it back.) Until Belkin can fix all the bugs, and there's a lot, with this product stay away. At this point I wish I never bought this product.

    Not Now!

    • Written by from Riverside

Good idea but not there yet:
    1. You can not set it up remotely. In case your iPhone App crashed (or else), you cannot set WeMo up remotely. No web access, telnet..etc.
    2. You cannot have more than one locations and controlled by the same App on iPhone.
    3. Tech support not good. I emailed the (first) question above, they simply direct me to online support web page, which is useless.

    I am returning my WeMo.

    Port Conflict

    • Written by from HALIFAX

The WEMO works fine, if you're not running a Mac server. It requires, and will attempt to auto-map, ports used by OS X Server - 8080 and 8443

Don't bother with WEMO until they either change ports or allow access - telnet, ssh, guy, whatever, to set ports manual.

Surprised to see this in the Apple store for these reasons.

    iOS app painfully slow

    • Written by from DALLAS

The app sometimes has to "look for sensors/switches" for several minutes before finding the switch, which happens to be 2 feet from my iphone and 10 feet from my wifi router. Also, sometimes the app indicates a device is on when it's off and vice versa.

    Wish I would've spent the $ elsewhere.

Belkin - please refine the software.

Watch out if using MAC address filtering

    • Written by from Calgary

Just purchased a pair of these after seeing the good reviews of the product. Since I am using MAC address filtering, the devices need to be set-up in your router. However, as I found out (later) on the web, the labels on the devices are off by one - you need to use the MAC address +1. I found this out by temporarily turning off the MAC address filtering and looking at the clients connecting to the network.

After that, everything works great (I took more than a half hour to figure that out). I performed a firmware update on both devices and everything was back in less than 5 minutes (firmware updated on both devices at the same time).

I would recommend this for anyone who has a plug-in device that needs to be turned on (or off) at specific times of the day OR if someone wants to remotely turn on a device (such as a coffee maker). I am using one of them to control a lamp to give the appearance of being home (while away).

Cannot see device when connected to same WLAN

    • Written by from Billingshurst

Yes these are great devices and a fantastic idea, but mine just doesn't work as it should - so I will not be buying anymore. The set up is very simple and once configured I could see it on my iPad4 and my iPhone5, but after a day or so, it disappears from the App when I am connected to my home network - if I go on 3G, or connect to someone else network, they appear - this is really frustrating, and the only way to see it again is to unplug it and plug it back in.
Support is quick to reply but could not fix my issue - also the support website is poorly set out and difficult to navigate.
Next time I will go for the Lightwave RF equipment, more expensive but there is a lot more choice.

    Works as advertised

I received the unit as a Christmas gift. Downloaded the app for my phone. Had a bit of trouble with the app not seeing the unit at times. However, an app update fixed the issue and everything works flawlessly. Now am using IFTTT to link it to the task I'm using it for, which is cool in itself.

Wifi drops and switch needs to be manually reset

    • Written by from Tullamore

Easy set up and worked well initially but every time my Wifi drops the switch has to be manually reset, not much good if I am away from the house.
Now I cannot see the switch over the internet, it will only work over the Wifi.
Would not recommend or buy another one of these products. Great idea but not working as I had expected and Technical Support poor.

Works as advertised (I have four now!)

    • Written by from Emmitsburg

Love my wemo’s! I purchased two more to bring my total to four. I am unsure why some folks are having the issues that they are. I can easily control my switches when I am not on my home router with no problems and set-up is fairly easy. A few times I had to start the process again but all four our great. I love having some of the switches turn on everything at once since they share the same clock. Of course, if your wi-fi is down, your switches won’t turn on. I am getting more creative with them as I go. My daughter thinks she can magically turn on the lights!
