Wemo has tortured me for two years now

    • Written by from Minneapolis

I really really wanted this Wemo Switch to work. Sometimes it does work (for short periods) but eventually (1) will lose network connection or (2) will require a firmware update that will hose it.

After last firmware update - I reset the WEMO again. Took a few tries - but got it back up and running.

However - and this is trully bizarre...

Every time I try to turn it on/off with IOS Iphone app - this does work - but somehow it causes iphone to indicate that the "SIM IS INVALID"!!!

Huh? Then iPhone is essentially hosed until the iPhone is power-cycled,

How is this WEMO app messing with the SIM card validity? Still scratching my head on that one - makes no sense.

I am an electronics engineer - and I really want to see this work reliably - but this product has zero value if you cannot trust it to work.

    Disaster

    • Written by from Bray

Went on holidays to our home in Tenerife, leaving a WeMo switch controlling the heating back in Ireland. On installing another WeMo switch in Tenerife, WeMo deleted my remote access to the WeMo in Ireland without warning (I established later that you only have remote access to WeMo's in one location - major shortcoming). Heating left on 24/7. I am a programmer and desperately tried to get telnet, web or any kind of access to the device in order to switch it off. Technical support were totally clueless and unhelpful. Head office did not return any of my calls. If you loose your remote access settings from your mobile to a WeMo device, you are doomed. I wish I had read some of the reviews below before buying this product.

    Great Idea But Extremely Dissatisfied

    • Written by from Brooklyn

I'll keep this short and sweet. Before bringing a product like this to market, you would assume Belkin had thoroughly tested it. However, based on the difficulty connecting the device to a wireless network and the countless times I reset the switch, it seems they did not. This product is barely mediocre. Hopefully someone else will do it better.

    Nice idea. Poor implementation.

    • Written by from North Saanich

If you're lucky and your network matches certain arcane criteria, this product will set up fairly easily.

It is so easy, however, to run into arbitrary conflicts between your wifi network and the WeMo's limitations, and end up spending hours of time debugging those issues, or simply give up and chuck the WeMo in a drawer and forget about it.

I love the idea, hate the implementation.

    Terrible product

    • Written by from Bridgewater

If you check the communities you'll find that almost every user has an issue with this device connecting to their home network. People report it taking hours. This is not acceptable for simple product like this. What a shame. Belkin doesn't seem to be doing much to correct the issues.

Belkin WeMo Light Switch - horrible

    • Written by from Ocoee

I'm fairly tech savvy and the difficulty of establishing a connection with the switch is beyond belief. I will be returning this product. This is such a simple concept, I am surprised that pairing is such a challenge for Belkin. And why did they release a product with such shortcomings? I will stay away from Belkin in the future. On the bright side, it did work fine as a non-automated, non-connected light switch!

Limited scope and a bit unstable

    • Written by from Richmond

I purchased a regular and Insight version of this switch late last winter. They were both OK, but my first negative observations were: I didn't seem to be able to control them from both my iPhone and my iPad. I got some flaky error. So I just used my iPhone. Then while traveling in September the switch on my router went off by itself. I have my WeMos on a separate network, so I was able to power cycle it successfully. Today, I updated the firmware and my Insight switch is "Not Detected" about 2/3 of the time. Also, I don't see a way to have multiple homes setup on the same WeMo account. It should allow for that for multiple WiFi networks in the same building or for vacation homes.

    Power Outages, bad design

In the event of a power outage the WeMo does NOT keep the last power state. Always comes back in OFF status. That bites.

    WeMo Blow

    • Written by from Greensburg

Product didn't work from start. Because I received a couple of gift cards from Apple for buy iPads, I decided to try this product, even with the bad reviews. I should have know better. If a product has almost the same amount of 5 stars as 1 stars, you know it is junk. If you want to waste $50, then you should buy this product, but suggest going elsewhere and purchasing the same thing through a more reputable company, Belkin makes great surge protectors, but apparently know very little about wifi.

Great concept, but needs a lot of work.

    • Written by from San Francisco

This could be a great product - but the software is very buggy and unpolished. I bought two switches at my local Apple store and was excited to bring these home and try them out. I setup the first device with little trouble - but it takes an extremely long time "looking for devices" for the device to show up in the list. For a while I thought something was wrong, and then finally it showed up and seemed to work fine. But then it asked me to update the firmware - so I did and that's when everything got really bad.

I waited about 30 minutes but the app still said the 'updating firmware'. So I called Belkin and got someone on the phone and after 30 minutes of resetting with the support guy he just said the device was bricked and that I should return it to the Apple store. So I brought it back to the store and swapped it out for a new one.

When I got home I tried to set up the new device. The app crashed in the middle of the install. Ug. Then I started the app again, and the 'spinner' just kept spinning and after 5 minutes I quit the app and restarted it. Finally it got me back to the list of devices, and after a few more minutes it finally updated and both my switches were there. They seem to work ok now.

But then I went outside and walked a few blocks away so I could still see my window. I wanted to try the remote feature over 4G. That didn't work at all. I tried to refresh the list and then both devices disappeared. I waited a few minutes and nothing. I finally gave up and walked to the store. On the way back I tried again this time the devices showed up and could be remotely switched on/off via 4G. Just very inconsistent.

Now the app asked me to update the firmware again on the switches. Well forget that. I am on the verge of returning both of them. Right now they seem stable but overall a very poor experience - more like beta status - any more trouble and I'm bringing them right back. I'm really disappointed that apple would let such a buggy, beta product into their store.

Watch out if using MAC address filtering

    • Written by from Calgary

Just purchased a pair of these after seeing the good reviews of the product. Since I am using MAC address filtering, the devices need to be set-up in your router. However, as I found out (later) on the web, the labels on the devices are off by one - you need to use the MAC address +1. I found this out by temporarily turning off the MAC address filtering and looking at the clients connecting to the network.

After that, everything works great (I took more than a half hour to figure that out). I performed a firmware update on both devices and everything was back in less than 5 minutes (firmware updated on both devices at the same time).

I would recommend this for anyone who has a plug-in device that needs to be turned on (or off) at specific times of the day OR if someone wants to remotely turn on a device (such as a coffee maker). I am using one of them to control a lamp to give the appearance of being home (while away).

    Reliability Issues

    • Written by from Makawao

I liked it when I first got it a year or so ago, but the other day it just went dead...no lights, no AC power no anything, just dead. Since it uses tamper proof screws, and my collection of triangle shaped screwdriver blades is non-existent, I was forced to buy another to replace it. I like it, I'm just not sure it's worh 50 bucks a year.

    New password restriction renders useless

    • Written by from London

I just had to reset my device, and now find I can no longer connect it to the network it was connected to before for months because, after firmware/app updates, the WeMo app now refuses passwords with spaces in it.

I'm not changing the password on all the untold other devices in the house because Belkin's engineers are incompetent, so I guess this gets tossed in the bin. Avoid -- even if this doesn't affect you, you can't rely on them not breaking something else at some point.

Be aware also that its wifi reception is not great -- I've had it fail to connect in the past in areas where my cell phone is getting a medium-level 3 bar signal.

    BAD...Do Not Waste $

    • Written by from Middlesex

Ordered 2 of these from Amazon,..BIG MISTAKE.... We have 2nd house 40 miles away with a Christmas Tree, so thought
if we visit and forget to turn the lights out, we can turn off with the WEMO.
We forgot to turn off 3 hours ago, and now the WEMO does not work. Getting message....Unable to set up your remote right now, try
again latter. After dozens of attempts, we have to WASTE Gas and time to drive down and unplug the Christmas lights.......... Bumber !!

I received the unit as a Christmas gift. Downloaded the app for my phone. Had a bit of trouble with the app not seeing the unit at times. However, an app update fixed the issue and everything works flawlessly. Now am using IFTTT to link it to the task I'm using it for, which is cool in itself.

    Stay Away

    • Written by from Atlanta

Initial set up was a little bumpy but was able to get 2 switches up and running in about an hour. Worked fairly well for a short time - long enough for me to buy a 3rd switch. Took about an hour to get that one up and running. Then consistently over the next year one (or all three) would be offline or something would mess up and all three would have to be set up again. Huge time sink. I get nauseous thinking about how many hours I've sunk into keeping these home "automation" devices running. VERY poor product.
