    Works As Advertosed

    Unlike earlier versions of internet controlled switches by other manufacturers, there is no subscription fee for use of the WeMo web site to control Belkin products.

    I plugged it in and it works! Great engineering.

    Now I can turn on my commercial espresso machine (10 minute warm up time) before I get out of bed, either manually or using the software timer function. When I get downstairs, it is ready to go.

    Bought 2 outlets and 4 switches. Yes, there is a f/w update, but no problems whatsoever. One of the best things we've purchased. Plan on adding more!

    I got 7 WeMo and some with sensor at my office. I love to simple control power outlet by smart phone. But what made me disappointed is the switch always down and cannot be detected. I have to go press the switch manually for many times, that's pointless.

    Great Idea But Extremely Dissatisfied

    I'll keep this short and sweet. Before bringing a product like this to market, you would assume Belkin had thoroughly tested it. However, based on the difficulty connecting the device to a wireless network and the countless times I reset the switch, it seems they did not. This product is barely mediocre. Hopefully someone else will do it better.

    Belkin WeMo Update

    I noticed quite a few people writing about the updates and thinking that the product is bad when it starts updating and seemingly would not recover. Well I just wanted to add my 2cents, I experienced the same thing and thought that I had a bad product as well. However, I left it in it's "update" mode overnight and tried accessing it the next day and it was fine. The problem is the update takes much longer than anyone knows or is saying. So just wait it out and it will work fine afterwards.
    My problem is that I cannot access mine from outside of my home. Overall I like it for the rules that I could set on it and for my wife coming home to a well lit front door and home.

    Great concept, but needs a lot of work.

    This could be a great product - but the software is very buggy and unpolished. I bought two switches at my local Apple store and was excited to bring these home and try them out. I setup the first device with little trouble - but it takes an extremely long time "looking for devices" for the device to show up in the list. For a while I thought something was wrong, and then finally it showed up and seemed to work fine. But then it asked me to update the firmware - so I did and that's when everything got really bad.

    I waited about 30 minutes but the app still said the 'updating firmware'. So I called Belkin and got someone on the phone and after 30 minutes of resetting with the support guy he just said the device was bricked and that I should return it to the Apple store. So I brought it back to the store and swapped it out for a new one.

    When I got home I tried to set up the new device. The app crashed in the middle of the install. Ug. Then I started the app again, and the 'spinner' just kept spinning and after 5 minutes I quit the app and restarted it. Finally it got me back to the list of devices, and after a few more minutes it finally updated and both my switches were there. They seem to work ok now.

    But then I went outside and walked a few blocks away so I could still see my window. I wanted to try the remote feature over 4G. That didn't work at all. I tried to refresh the list and then both devices disappeared. I waited a few minutes and nothing. I finally gave up and walked to the store. On the way back I tried again this time the devices showed up and could be remotely switched on/off via 4G. Just very inconsistent.

    Now the app asked me to update the firmware again on the switches. Well forget that. I am on the verge of returning both of them. Right now they seem stable but overall a very poor experience - more like beta status - any more trouble and I'm bringing them right back. I'm really disappointed that apple would let such a buggy, beta product into their store.

    Firmware update issue

    Installed my new WeMo Switch. Connected to the wifi fine using the limited info in the package but then the app asked to do the firmware update... hours later still not completed. Ok, what now? Tried to unplug and plug back in. Left it trying all day just in case while I looked on the Belkin support site... couldn't find anything closely related to my issue. I found an unrelated issue support page that showed how to do a reset. Sure enough it worked for my problem... now it works well.

    To do reset: unplug, press the restore button on top and maintain while plugging back in and hold for about 15sec... wait for reboot and it's ready to use.

    Don't miss this step......

    Had a heck of a time trying to configure with my 4S. I was finally able to configure by bringing the Wemo into the room where my router is; apparently you need to have a very strong signal to configure.

    After that, no problems. Moved the Wemo to its final location in the kitchen; works like a charm.

    Do not buy this

    This product is terrible and Belkin's support is non-existent. Why Apple has allowed this into their store is confusing.

    First experience is that the item requires a software update. Except when one goes to update it the product it is 'bricked' and needs a hardware reset. After the reset the stupid thing asks for a SW update again and the cycle continues.

    Do not buy this product.

    Nice idea. Poor implementation.

    If you're lucky and your network matches certain arcane criteria, this product will set up fairly easily.

    It is so easy, however, to run into arbitrary conflicts between your wifi network and the WeMo's limitations, and end up spending hours of time debugging those issues, or simply give up and chuck the WeMo in a drawer and forget about it.

    I love the idea, hate the implementation.

    Poorly written software - No special characters

    I've spent numerous hours narrowing down some issues with connecting a WeMo to an SSID containing a comma. Belkin's eventual response is that the WeMo won't work with special characters in either the SSID or the wifi password.

    That's a fairly poor situation, made worse by not being documented.

    Basically if there's an SSID near you which contains a comma, your WeMo likely won't show ANY wireless networks.

    Very useful

    Have 2 and have had them for 5 months.......use the timer device flawlessly to turn lights on and off. One thing I found during setup, If you have a router EXTENDER, turn the EXTENDER OFF during setup so it connects to the main router, then the set up goes smooth. I can access these from my home network, another network, and cellular just fine

    Simply does not work

    TRied 2 devices now, it just doesn't connect to tour wifi network, and I'm using a state of the art latest Apple time capsule router. All Belkin support is saying, try again. Good luck.

    Horrible Support, poorly designed software

    Bought several WeMo switcheds set them up and worked fine.

    Upgraded my wireless access point. Reset Wemo's and set them up again. Can now only control them via external network, not on local wireless net, although no errors in the setup of the devices. No devices are found locally after setup, just hangs.

    Made numerous calls to support, and paid for Belkin Premium support. Have never reached anyone knowledgable about WeMo's. Only receive repetitive e-mails asking me to repeat the things I have already done.

    Research on the net indicated that Belkin stores info about the Wireless access point the device is associated with initially on their servers. If you change the access point name it cannot be updated on their servers by the consumer.

    You are also unable to reach anyone at Belkin to reset or correct the info. Am the not so proud owner of three semi-useless bricks call WeMo now....

    Based on the support experience I have stopped by Belkin products as a rule..

    New password restriction renders useless

    I just had to reset my device, and now find I can no longer connect it to the network it was connected to before for months because, after firmware/app updates, the WeMo app now refuses passwords with spaces in it.

    I'm not changing the password on all the untold other devices in the house because Belkin's engineers are incompetent, so I guess this gets tossed in the bin. Avoid -- even if this doesn't affect you, you can't rely on them not breaking something else at some point.

    Be aware also that its wifi reception is not great -- I've had it fail to connect in the past in areas where my cell phone is getting a medium-level 3 bar signal.

    It's like the folks at Belkin aren't even trying.

    I really don't know how this has such a high rating here. I have owned two of the Belkin WeMo switches. Connection is a nightmare. Nothing more fun than waiting and waiting and waiting to have these things either not be able to find a network or join a network. As a former Apple employee with network certification I do know how to set up a robust network in a home. I have great signal strength over at my neighbors house but with these Belkin switches it is hit or miss at best. Once you have one plugged, assuming you can it to be functional, never ever unplug it again. Never change any setting and never have a power outage. If you do you will find yourself spending hours trying to get the thing working again. Seriously don't bother buying this piece of plastic junk.
    Additionally these things are huge. They pretty much cover up a duplex outlet and make a quad gang outlet with access to one outlet and you better have a pretty tiny plug to use for that outlet. Of course this troglodyte design problem only matters if you can get the switch to connect and then become functional, which is unlikely. Or you can do what I do and just leave them unplugged in the hopes that someday Belkin will get there act together, rewrite their lousy software, and upload a firmware fix that does actually fix this piece of junk.

    Works sporadically at best!

    It could be so good, but isn't. After many attempts to get the switch working, several switch restores, several phone and router resets, I managed to get it working. It worked fine until I quit the app and started it again, then it couldn't find my switch. I set it all up again, (same issues as before), worked fine for a few minutes but same issue arose when I quit the app. I tried everything the troubleshooting guide said, Googled the issue only to find out that it is a widespread issue so returned it for a refund.

    Badly limited device due to Belkin's short sighted thinking

    WeMo could be phenomenal. It could be a switch you could trigger via hotkey on your Mac, but it isn't. It could be a switch you could teach your universal remote to trigger. But it isn't.

    Instead, WeMo is a switch you trigger using an iPhone app. It sounds like a neat idea at first, but once you've used it, you realize how annoying it is.

    If you want to use WeMo for a lamp, you're better off buying Philips Hue light bulbs. With Hue, you can use Mac apps, iOS apps, or you can write your own code. The API is open. I created hotkeys on my Mac that turn my Hue lights on in various settings (plus 'off' of course) and I use BetterTouchTool to map those keys into my Apple Remote. In other words, remote control for my lights. SWEET! Ah, but I can't do any of that for WeMo because it never occurred to Belkin that a phone might not be the best way to access a switch.

    Don't expect Mac apps for WeMo any time soon. Belkin specifically states that users and developers may not "Copy, decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble, attempt to derive the source code of, modify, decrypt, or create derivative works of the API and its parts" ...in other words, the best you're going to get with WeMo is an iOS app. Do you really want to have to go get your phone and then scroll through apps to turn on a switch?

    Even the hardware is trash. It's a big bulky 1980's looking switch that takes up so much physical space. It uses one outlet and blocks the other because it's so big and poorly designed.

    WeMo is garbage. Maybe five to ten years from now, Belkin will try again. All I can say is that the hardware is cheap, the software is insanely limited, and the functionality is needlessly poor. I'd give WeMo zero stars if that were an option.

    Beware if your WiFi Passphrase Contains Spaces and Other Characters.

    I've just received my Switch from the Apple store, however, what none of the reviews or the website states is that when configuring your switch, it doesn't currently support passwords/phrases with spaces.

    You get a helpful message from the WeMo app advising this, but I feel limitations on password strengths and support should be explicit from the outset.

    I'm configured with WPA2, and means I have to reconfigured 30 other WiFi enabled devices around the home with a new router passphrase.

    So as of yet, I'm not able to test it's effectiveness and debating whether to send the switch back to Apple.
