    QuickTime Pro RIP OFF

    • Written by from Cupertino

I've been a Mac user for nearly 20 years. QuickTime Pro is an incredibly great tool for what it is. But everytime you upgrade Quicktime it deletes the Pro functions. I've purchase Pro twice and everytime I upgrade it gets deleted. Apple doesn't tell you this. Shame, shame!

Good product, shame about encoding speed

    • Written by from Frome

I have a 1.33 GHz Powerbook and can confirm that encoding speed for ipod video is very slow with Quicktime Pro. However, it does produce good results, noticeably better than, for instance Videora iPod Converter (for windows), and any kind of video encoding will always involve long waits. I would be interested to compare times with a G5 system.

If ripping DVDs for ipod is your thang, then I strongly recommend the freeware utility Handbrake, which can do this in a single step, is relatively straightforward to use, and is I think faster than QT due to using a different encoding engine. I am actually using it right now and it is averaging 14 fps which is an order of magnitude faster than quicktime!

The short and blunt: Quicktime Pro does what it says on the tin with aplomb, I could not do without it, but be prepared to leave your computer for a long time for large encodes.

To those who post negative reviews just through not being able to use it, I suggest a little perseverance might pay off and recommend other users to disregard their input.

Good but not perfect: 4 stars.

    Sour Apple taste

    • Written by from Wynnewood

As an ex-Apple employee, it pains me to dump on this product. Others have noted all the basic problems (unannounced deleting of previous versions, requiring full Pro upgrades in new versions, inability to reload previous versions, slow processing, etc.), but to find freeware (iSquint) that does an iPod video conversion faster, at half the kb of the QuickTime file, is really an insult.
QuickTime Pro is still worth $30, but the experience leaves a bad aftertaste.
Apple marketing folks (and you know who you are) should really rethink this one.

    Good product easy to use

    • Written by from Huntingdon

Someone wrote that they were not new to macs, yet couldn't work out where to put the code.

I'm brand new to mac, I've had it since xmas day, a little pressie, and had no problem pumping in my code.

It's easy. Go into system preferences>quicktime.

    HOW EASY CAN IT BE?

    Pricing issues aside, great software

    • Written by from Richmond

People are complaining about not being able to upgrade, and people are complaining to pay for some basic features. (Hey Apple, Sound Recorder comes free with Windows! Why not Mac?) But still, I don't think it's fair to rate a product one or two stars just because you're not satisfied with the pricing structure. QuickTime is simply the best media standard out there, and you truly get what you pay for in this instance. If I could afford the $30 myself I'd upgrade right away.

Happy to pay the $30 to convert iPod movies, but....

    • Written by from Monroe

.... installation needs to be more clear. I just downloaded the "key" and there are no clear instructions on where to unlock the Pro features. The instructions say to "click on buy QuickTime Pro" in the QT7 menu, which is now inaccessable. Under "Registration" I've entered the Key Code, but it's asking for a Registration Code. My "about QT7" shows no Pro features installed. What to do?

As a recent convert from the XP adware, malware, spyware maelstrom, this is small potatoes. In several months of computer bliss with my G5 and iMac, this is the first real puzzler. Overall, one half-baked cookie won't spoil the whole batch.

    Hopeless

    • Written by from Morpeth

Bought i-pod.Movies would not download so I bought QuickTime Pro which I thought would solve the issue.
It didn`t so I have wasted money on totally useless software which does not work.
Has anyone out there EVER managed to contact a human who might be of help in solving any issues with i-pod or whatever or does Apple get away with selling a product and having no support whatsoever when you cant get it to work.
Best advice is DO NOT GET CONNED>DONT BUY IT

    Don't listen!

    • Written by from State College

Most of these reviews are just just saying that there previous edition of pro got downgraded. IT is not because of the quality of this product. This upgrade works great and I think it would be perfect for any mac user!

    Buyer beware..

    • Written by from FALMOUTH

Don't by Quicktime Pro unless you really need it in the near future, because every time Apple issue a new free upgrade to Quicktime (eg from Quicktime 6 to 7) your Pro purchase will be invalidated, and you'll have to buy it again. Even if you've only had it a short time.

Don't waste your time or money

    • Written by from locke

I just purchased this program today and already have noticed how much of a waste it is. I was converting a video of mine that was on my computer, one that's only 8 minutes long, it took me well over 30 minutes to convert it. Overall the program is not worth it, I don't recommend it to others.

Good. . . but converting is SLOW

    • Written by from Sutton West

The software is excellent but the converting is slow for any file to .m4v (Ipod file). If your buying this for your ipod its a good buy considering that you can only use this program to convert files to ipod movies. I bought this program to convert home movies to my ipod and a regular movie (hour and a half) takes approx. 13 hrs to convert into a .m4v file. I would not hesitate buying this program if you have a 5th gen. ipod. But, for other uses i would not know of.

    Quick, easy and simple

    • Written by from Chesham

Quicktime Pro is easy to install, just go into the quicktime menu (inside the application) and click 'Register'. Simple!
The conversions work just as you would expect, and the full screen viewing is pretty cool as well.

    Quicktime pro Rip Off

    • Written by from Richmond

Why no warnings regarding upgrade from 6 to 7. If you upgrade from 6 as a pro user you will have to shell out again to be a pro user in 7. Come on Apple a warning would good.

Do not purchase Quicktrick Pro 7

    • Written by from Aiken

After purchasing the product, I was still unable to read the program i was wanting to read. Buying the pro version is just unneccessary as is quicktime itself.

    Terrible...

    • Written by from Mill Valley

This product was a total waste of money. I bought it to trasfer my old videos (quicktime) to iTunes format so I could play them on my new iPod video. Besides the fact that I waited about 7 or 8 hours for a movie to be converted (that didn't end up even having sound), this product really works well. When apple says that QuickTime Pro will convert your old movies so that you can play them on your iPod, they really should mean it.

Best player to use, but insulting to customers

    • Written by from Winnipeg

First off quicktime is the best player for watching movies

But the upgrade scheme is just stupid, a rip-off and is insulting to their customers

Bundle this with iLife without stupid upgrade keys.

Why should we buy QT Pro?

    • Written by from Singapore

I have a few video clips which is format as MPEG type. I copied all of them into my new G4 and then relized that all can't be played by QuickTime. I tried to look up Apple's website about this problem and I was told to buy MPEG-2 playback progam. This is funny and really unfair. Because i tried to look for alternative program that play MPEG-2 file but all are blocked buy QuickTime prgram. It's like Apple is forcing me to buy their products if I want to see my clips or something else. This really turns me down since I've just gave up using Window OS last month because of these thing like this.
