  • Memory expansion for MacPro 5,1 (8 core)

    Dear all,

currently, i'm using 4x2gb memory module for my MacPro 5,1 (8 core) occupying 4 slot, can I install additional 1x 8gb in order to expand my memory to total 16gb

    Answer

    Short answer, Yes.
Long answer yes but with some possible performance loss. On your motherboard you have (8) slots separated into two groups of 4. You want to keep the bands, types and sizes the same to maximize performance. Not sure about this part, but triple channel memory I believe is the fastest at the moment so it might be best to add two more 2gb modules to have 3x2 and 3x2 for a total of 12gb. The downside is that you only have one more pair of open slots (which will disable triple channel memory) in the case you need more. The up side is 2gb models are much cheeper than 8gb models. I would think that keeping the sizes the same would be the biggest priority but I would suggest you check on benchmarks and compare possible configurations based on how much you think you will need. I also do not know the performance drop/increase between single, dual, triple, and ?quadruple? channel configurations.

    Hopefully this was somewhat helpful!
