Depends on your Mac's processor.
If it is a PowerPC processor, you CAN NOT install Snow Leopard.
If it is an Intel processor, you CAN install Snow Leopard.
To determine the type of processor, go to "About this Mac" in the "Apple" menu. If the word "Intel" appears anywhere next to "Processor", you can install Snow Leopard. You need at least 1GB of memory, 2GB or more is better.
TIP: Consider installing Snow Leopard on a separate partition (especially since Snow Leopard may need to do some reformatting of the partition it is being installed to). With an OS installed on two partitions, you can then start up from either the Tiger partition or the Snow Leopard partition by pressing the Option Key during startup (or using the Start Up Disk preference in System Preferences). This lets you keep you OS 10.4.11 installation in case you want to jump back.
BTW: If installing to a new partition, Snow Leopard installer will search your Mac for other OS installations and ask you if you want to import OS settings, apps, and/or files from an older installation. Say yes to all for a smoother transition to Snow Leopard. All settings, compatible apps/drivers and files will be copied to the new partition.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

Answer
You can install Snow Leopard (OS 10.6) on your Mac and then do Software Updates (under the Apple Menu) to bring it up to OS 10.6.8.
Lion (OS 10.7) is also supported by your Mac, but Mountain Lion (OS 10.8) is not supported.
If you plan to upgrade to Lion, you used to go to the App Store to download and install (or buy a flash drive with the Lion installer on it). To access the App Store you had to have at least OS 10.6.6 already installed. However, Lion is no longer at the App Store and one needs to call Apple Customer Service to get it.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

Snow Leopard before Mountain Lion?
I have a Mac from 2009 with a 2.66 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, version 10.5.8. Do I need to buy Snow Leopard or can I just by Mountain Lion?

Answer
Personally, don't bother with 10.8- Snow Leopard has been tagged as a very and reliable stable operating system for many into photography, music and high processor-demanding applications.
Your system is plenty for Snow Leopard but might take a hit on Mountain Lion. I/m running an early 2010 MBP and experienced issues immediately with ML, but none with SL

Is there a way to upgrade multiple Macs to Snow Leopard without having to use boxed copies? Currently looking to upgrade around 40 Macs in a school.
Actually looking to upgrade these Macs to Mountain Lion via a volume license, but the Macs are all on versions prior to Snow Leopard. Want to avoid buying 40 individual boxed copies and installing Snow Leopard on each one!

Answer
Snow Leopard (OS 10.6) requires an Intel processor and at least 1GB of memory. (Note: the installer will not work on PowerPC Macs, or on most recent Macs introduced after Lion (OS 10.7) was released.).
The MacBookPro has an Intel processor so if you have at least 1GB of memory (2GB or more is better) you are good to go.
Purchase the Snow Leopard Disk. Then proceed with installation.
You could upgrade directly over OS 10.4, but I would recommend doing the following.
1) Using Disk Utility from the Snow Leopard disk, create a new partition formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journalled). (Alternatively, use an external drive and use Disk Utility to RESTORE your OS 10.4 partition to the external drive. This is a clone. Make sure you can start up from the external drive after the restore. Then format your internal partition to Mac OS Extended (Journalled).) [Note: to get to Disk Utility on the Snow Leopard disk, open the installer (if not already open), click on Utilities and Restart. Disk Utilities is under the Utilities menu after restart.]
2) Install Snow Leopard on the blank formatted partition. During install, the installer will search your Mac for any partitions with an OS on it, and then ask if you want to import OS settings, apps and/or files. Do the import to move your OS settings, apps and files to the Snow Leopard partition. If you decide to not import, you will have a "clean install" of Snow Leopard instead.
3) After installation and startup in Snow Leopard, go to Apple menu and do Software Update. This will bring you up to OS 10.6.8.
You will now have a dual boot Mac and can start up from either OS 10.4 or OS 10.6. When I upgraded from OS 10.4.11 to OS 10.6, some of my printer and scanner drivers did not work in OS 10.6 until I could find suitable drivers. In the meantime, I could still start up from OS 10.4 to print or scan.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

I have Mac OS X Version 10.5.8. Today I purchased the new iphone 5 and it's telling me that I need iTunes Version 10.7. Do I have to have OS X 10.6?

I have the same problem. You do have to have the OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). If you have a Macbook 2008 edition and later and 1 gig of memory on your macbook, you can purchase Snow Leopard for $20. I just had to do the same thing to allow itunes 10.7 to download, so i can sync my iphone 5. After you update to Snow Leopard, if you have 2 gig of memory, you can purchase Lion for another $20 and it will work better with your iphone 5. Unfortunatly, I did not have 2 gig of memory, but snow leopard works just fine!

Is Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 the same as Snow Leopard 10.6

Best Answer
Yes. All OS versions starting with "10.6." are Snow Leopard.
When you install Snow Leopard, you will probably be installing an older version such as 10.6.3. Then need to perform Software Updates (under the Apple menu) to update Snow Leopard to the latest version (currently 10.6.8).- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

I am running 10.5.8, on a 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Am I able to upgrade to Snow Leopard and then to Mountain Lion?
- Asked by Craig E from Beaverton

Best Answer
This will depend on your Mac.
I assume that if you have a 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, that your Mac is from 2006/2007.
Unfortunately, Mountain Lion only supports Macs made after mid-2007. At the Apple website, search for support article HT5444, "System requirements for OS X Mountain Lion".
However, your Mac will run Snow Leopard (and Lion, if that is still available).
-----------------
To find out definitively if your Mac is supported by Mountain Lion, take note of your Mac's Model ID. (Under the Apple Menu, click on "About this Mac", then click on "More Info", then "Hardware"*, and there will be your Mac's model ID. (* For some "About this Mac" dialog boxes, click on "System Report" between "More Info" and "Hardware".)
Then go to the Apple website and search for "How to identify XXXX models". For XXXX enter the type of Mac you have: iMac, MacBook, MacBookPro, MacBookAir, MacMini, etc. You should end up with an article that lists all the models and, for the later models, the date they were released. (If no date is listed beside your model, then do an internet search for "WIKI Intel XXXX". Again substitute XXXX with the type of mac you have. WIKI has charts with approximate dates of release for each model.)
Use the release date, and compare to the "System Requirements for OS X Mountain Lion" at Apple website.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

Answer
Snow Leopard has never been sold as a download.
It is only available on disc. Shipping is free if ordered from the Apple Store online.
If your make does not have an optical drive, there are three methods to install:
1) Connect your Mac to a network with a computer that has an optical drive. The computer can be a PC running Windows XP or Vista, or a Mac running OS 10.4.10 or later (OS 10.5 or OS 10.6 preferred). The Mac needs to be older than mid-2010. There is software on the Snow Leopard disc to allow Remote Install of the Mac OS from computers with optical drives.
2) Use an external optical drive. (This "should" work.)
3) Get a USB flash stick that is at least 8GB in size. Use Disk Utility to reformat it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". On a Mac with optical drive, use Disk Utility to RESTORE the Snow Leopard disc to the flash drive. Connect flash drive to your Mac and restart while holding the Option key. Start up from the flash drive and install Snow Leopard.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve
