2 yr old MacBook - can it connect to the 24" LED cinema display?

YES - you can, I've just done it. I have an early 2008 Macbook Pro (without Mini Displayport). Buy yourself the Atlona AT-DP 200 DVI to Mini Displayport adapter - works brilliantly. Am now using the 24" cinema display which is awesome, wish I'd done it ages ago.

Turn-On Button on the Display to start my Macbook that is closed?
Greetings,
I am considering purchasing a 24'' LED Cin. Display for my Macbook (unibody).
Now I am wondering if I can close the Macbook, put it in one corner of my desk and turn it on only using the 24'' Display? Is there an "On"-button on the display, or do I have to open up my Macbook and start it like I do now and then close it again to have only the new external display run?
Hope you can help me out here!
Regards,

There is an Apple KnowledgeBase article (HT3131) that tells you how to use an external display with the Apple portable's lid closed (called "closed-clamshell" or "closed-display" mode):
If you go to support.apple.com and after that type /kb/HT3131 you'll find it. (I can't put the full link here, because that's not allowed.)
You'll of course have to use an external mouse and display.- Answered by JR from Oakland

Actually you can. There's now a DVI to DisplayPort converter. It's by Atlona and it will set you back USD$179. Do a search for "Atlona AT-DP200" for more details. An easier way will be to simply buy a new video card with a DisplayPort output.

24-inch display is glossy. Does Apple make a matte or dull display?
I can't imagine trying to edit photos with reflections glaring back at me. Or am I missing something? Apparently most people are okay with this?

Yes, unfortunately glossy screen is a problem. I am a graphic designer and I work with a lot of image editing and photo retouching. If I work with light images it is more or less ok, but working with dark ones I can see my face in front even if the room is not sunny. Anti-glare screen film is not suitable for color critics. I haven't tried this film myself, but I read in the manufacturer's website that it diminishes contrast and adds blur when watching from different angle.
I thin that for non-professionals glossy screen and added anti glare film is ok, but for professionals (photographers, designers, etc.) definately not.
Apple could offer an option to choose. I will have to look for older matte iMac or Cinema Display.- Answered by AM

With the use of eyeTV, a product found at the apple store, you may be able to watch tv on your cinema display. however, It will be connecting to your computer to work not the display by itself since there isn't a coaxial cable connection on the back of it.

Answer
Yes, the Apple 24” LED Cinema Display is an HD monitor. It easily satisfies all of the industry standard specifications of a High Definition screen. Below is an example of the Apple Display’s HD qualifications in basic defining terms.
Apple 24” - res. 1920x1200
Requirement for 1080p/1080i is….1920x1080 (the display is higher)
2. The Display includes a brilliant screen with of over 8 times the minimum color/pixel standard for HD - a clean 16.7 Million Colors.
3. Supports 16:9 widescreen, 4:3, and 1:1 standard resolution configurations.
You all good now?
Trust me, I recently bought the 24” Inch display and it’s real sweet. Enjoy.- Answered by DD from Philadelphia

Yes, but if you do not have a diplay port, you need to get the apple mac pro graphics upgrade kit
The ATI Radeon HD 4870 will support these cinema displays
It has two video ports: one Mini DisplayPort and one dual-link DVI port so you can have a 24" or 30" apple display
hope this helps! :]- Answered by AH from Rancho Palos Verdes

Answer
They ad is referring to
* video (mini-display port, although there is an adapter for standard DVI),
* USB (for the built-in USB ports and camera), and
* audio (1/8th inch stereo, just like an iPod or Walkman).
The cables to connect the display to a Macbook are included. The only thing you might need is an adapter for the mini-display port to DVI if you're not using a recent Macbook or Macbook Pro.- Answered by JH from Omaha

The screen itself is an LCD display. LED refers to the backlighting source. LED being generally preferred over, now dated, cold-cathode backlights.

what cable do I need?
I have a new MacBook Pro (purchased June 2009). Does the 24-inch cinema display come with the necessary mini display port cable, or do I need to purchase one separately? And if so, what exactly do I need to buy? Thanks.

Well thats a great question to ask. The new cinema display comes with all the necessary cables need to turn your laptop into a desktop. Three cables in all one for the power supply, a usb cable for the ones in the back of the display, and the mini-displayport for the monitor which also carries your audio to the speakers as well.

Will this display work when using a MacBook Pro using Bootcamp running Windows XP? Also will the 'Closed-Display' mode work in Bootcamp?
We have a 2009 Macbook Pro and for work we are running Windows XP (Windows 7 soon) using Bootcamp. Will the Apple LED Cinema Display work when using Bootcamp, and if so will we be able to use it in "closed-display" mode? Are there any problems with making the LED Cinema Display the 'Primary' display? An other issues?
Thanks!!!!- Asked by AS from Spring

Answer
Sadly no one including Apple Sales or Tech Support could answer this question. So we ordered the monitor and hopped for the best. Now that we have it installed I guess I’ll answer my own question in the hopes that it may help someone else.
-The Apple LED Cinema Display will work just fine with a MacBook Pro running Windows XP using Bootcamp.
-All the drivers should already be included when you follow the installation directions specified in Bootcamp.
-Once the Apple LED Cinema Display is connected Windows will detect the new hardware (Display, Speakers, Camera, and Microphone) and then ask you to restart Windows.
-After you restart you will need to use the nvidia control panel to select the Apple LED Cinema Display as the sole primary display if you intend to use only the monitor when running Windows.
-Finally to enter closed-display mode you need to have a keyboard and mouse installed. In our case the mouse is Bluetooth but the keyboard is USB and is connected to the USB port behind the Apple LED Cinema Display. First you have to connect the MacBook and power up Windows. Then once Windows is up you close the MacBook and Windows will go into standby mode. Then with the MacBook still closed you type on the keyboard and it should come out of standby mode giving you Windows running on a closed MacBook Pro displaying on a beautiful Apple LED Cinema Display.
- One final note we have tried using the Bluetooth mouse to wake up the computer but this does not work. So if you have both a Bluetooth mouse and keybord this may be a problem. Also I can’t get the brightness control F1 & F2 on the keyboard to adjust the external monitor’s brightness. I may reinstall the drivers. Finally there is an silver aluminum arch stand that you can used to turn the MacBook Pro into a mini tower. All in all if you have to run Windows for work this is an amazing setup!- Answered by AS from Spring

Two sreen set-up
Can i attach another 24 inch LED Cinema Display flat panel monitor to increase my viewing area of my 24 inch iMac e.g. have two sreens instead of one? Of course that would allow to use the second monitor to use with my MacBook as well hence have much more use from the second monitor.

Answer
Yes. According to the specifications on Apple's site, the 24" iMac has a Mini DisplayPort output which is what is required to drive the 24" Cinema Display.
