Can I use the AirPort Express Base Station as a WiFi repeater to extend coverage in my home?

Best Answer
Yes...you can go into the settings for the AirPort Express and tell it how you want it to be used. You select 'Extend' and it's all setup. I just did it this weekend and it took all of 5 minutes from the time I opened the box.

Could I use this to connect my XBOX 360 to the internet via either RJ-45 or USB?

Best Answer
Yes, but only if the airport express is extending an existing airport network. In other words, if you already have an airport extreme, time capsule, or another airport express it is possible to do this. It's just, however, not the easiest or most reliable option in my opinion.

Can I use AirPort Express Base Station to connect to my existing home wi-fi network (USR Wireless Router) and share my HP LaserJet P1005 printer?
- Asked by CR from Kandana

Best Answer
Yes, as long as you know the credentials for joining a device to your current wireless network. You would setup the Airport Express to "Join Your Wireless Network" like a computer or laptop. You can then connect your printer to the USB port on the Airport Express making it available to any computers on the same network. (NOTE: the USB port on the Airport Express is not "hot-swappable" which means you should connect the printer first and then power on the Airport Express)
The only issues that can occur include the security on your current wireless network not allowing the Airport Express to join it correctly if at all. I recommend using WPA-PSK security with a password of 8 or more characters (required). Wireless networks that are set to use a 10-character or 5 character passwords are most-likely using the older WEP security which doesn't always work well with the newer hardware in the Airport products.

At the risk of sounding stupid, how do I use the AirPort Express when I travel? Is it as simple as plugging it in to the wall and surfing? Help?

The socalled "Best Answer" misses your point entirely. When you travel, you do need to plug-in your Express Station (for power), BUT you do also need to have internet access through an Ethernet cable (available at many hotels for a time-based fee for the access).

You have to pay per month for High Speed Internet from your local provider. But you only pay Apple once. This piece of hardware is used to turn your wired connection from you cable/phone company into a wireless network.

I want to place speakers in multiple rooms in my house and run them all off of my computer. Do I need an Airport Express for each pair of speakers?
If I extend the WiFi network with these multiple Airport Expres units, will all of the speakers play simultaneously?
- Asked by SH from Keswick
- 20/10/2009

Best Answer
You don't always need an airport express at every amp of set of speakers. I have 4 of them in my home. Three go to individual amplifiers/speaker setups. One goes to a large amp that runs multiple pairs of speakers in the house. Look at a device that lets you run multiple speakers off one pair of speaker outputs (Niles, Adcom make these) and then you can feed multiple speakers

wondering which base station is right for me.. extreme or express. what's the difference? can i plug in my external harddrive to wirelessly sync?
- Asked by TP from Fargo

Best Answer
Airport express does NOT support sharing hard drives, which is one of the key differences between the two routers. It only supports printer sharing via the USB port. The airport express also supports a maximum of 10 wireless clients, while the airport extreme supports a maximum of 50 wireless AND wired clients. The airport express does not support wired clients if configured as a base station.

Yes - you can connect your iPod touch to an Airport Express via 802.11g wireless (the Airport Express also supports 802.11n). But, if you already have wifi for your computer you may be able to use that instead.

Why would I want the Airport Extreme over the Express?
- Asked by SR from Barrington
- 23/10/2009
- Flag as inappropriate
Best Answer
The decision is just a matter of preference.
If you need a work horse wireless base station that can support a larger number of users, you will want to look at the Airport Extreme.
If you want something easily portable, and the ability to easily extend your music listening to another part of your house, then the Airport Express will be a better choice.
The other capabilities of these two are pretty much identical, with the one standout being that the Airport Extreme can support hard drives and printers on its usb port, while the Airport Express only supports printers on its usb port.
Technical differences between the two devices can be found on Apples web site.- Answered by JD from Rohnert Park

No you can't. Airtunes is a function of iTunes, so there would be no way of using it on the iPod Touch.

Have they fixed the problem of stutters in the music and the latest versions of itunes?
- Asked by JM from CROWS NEST
- 30/09/2009
- Flag as inappropriate
Best Answer
The stutters or drop in signal can be caused by multiple things.
Some factors to consider are:
- Wireless interference
- iTunes music folder location
- Number of Airport devices on the network
- Distance between main router (or computer) and Airport Express
- Software and firmware
- Streaming Buffer Size found in iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced

is this instead of using a wirless modem? or do i need both?
I dont have wireless broadband at the moment with my pc. but have just bought an imac and want to use the imac, the dell, the nintendo wii and the hp printer all wirlessly. do i need to purchase an airport express in order to do these things or something else???

Your modem is what provides your home with an internet connection. The AirPort Express creates a wireless network that allows multiple devices to share the same connection wirelessly. So, in short, you will need a high-speed connection, a modem, and wireless router (Presumably an AirPort Express).

I want to stream music from my laptop to my Bose lifestyle system. Does this airport express do that for me? How do I hook it up?
- Asked by LL from Bellingham
- 29/10/2009
- Flag as inappropriate
Best Answer
To hook it up - You will need a phono to 3.5mm jack lead. Using a free input (e.g. Aux or if, like mine, you still have one -use the tape input) connect the red & white phono plugs to your selected lifestyle system input and the 3.5mm jack to the Airport Express. When you stream the music from your laptop, on your Lifestyle remote, select the input you've plugged into and hey presto, you should hear your music loud and very clear! If you have an iphone or ipod touch, you can use the Remote app to control the music too.

I have a HP photosmart printer which is not wireless. Will connecting it to airport express allow wireless printing?
- Asked by BV from Bracknell
- 19/10/2009
- Flag as inappropriate
Best Answer
Yes, any computer properly configured will be able to print to the HP that is connected to the Airport Express. It uses the Bonjour discovery protocol to do this.
If you are using a Mac, Bonjour is already installed on the OS. If you are using a PC, simply go to apple.com and enter 'Bonjour for Windows' in the search bar. This will allow you to download and install the discovery software.
Of course, all computers that wish to use the printer will need the correct printer drivers as well.- Answered by ST from Sacramento

Does the USB port support External Hard Drives?
- Asked by FM from Pleasant Hill
- 22/10/2009
- Flag as inappropriate
Best Answer
No Only The AirPort Extreme Base Station. & Time Capsule
The AirPort Express CAN NOT
Share your hard drive.
You can share an external USB hard drive over your wireless and wired networks by simply connecting it to the USB port on your AirPort Extreme Base Station. Called AirPort Disk, this feature is perfect for sharing files and more. If you’re a MobileMe member using a Mac with Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard, you can even access the files on the drive over the Internet.4- Answered by TZ from Winter Park
