Answer
Monitors can have 3 different types of connectors on them. VGA is the oldest, DVI is newer, and HDMI is the newest. HDMI is also found on TV sets and DVD players. It is a connector that can transmit video and audio using 1 cable.

i have a 60" plasma with a 5.1 audio surround sound in my room. will i get the full 5.1 affect with this cable if i connect it to my reciver?
CAN I GET TRUE HD SOUND (5.1 audio). ALONG WITH PICTURE QUALITY WITH THIS PRODUCT?

Best Answer
As long as your 5.1 receiver supports HDMI, or your TV can output 5.1 to your receiver, then yes.
If you use the audio-out on your TV, it will work.
If you pass everything through a A/V receiver, it should work, as long as there is a HDMI port somewhere on it.- Answered by Zeke S from Lafayette

Answer
With a lot of exhausting research on many sites and support communities......oh and four visits to the Apple Store and speaking to Apple Support. You cannot connect your ATT Uverse cable box to your 2011 iMac to watch TV........that's such a bummer. Then monitor is perfect for it. Still if anyone knows if something is coming out to rectify this, I'm all ears!!!!

I own a 15" MacBook Pro late 2009, is there anything I can do to watch audio and video from a Mac to a 1080p HDTV?
I want to watch internet tv from my late 2009 15" MacBook Pro to a 1080p HDTV with HDMI hookup or any other way. I looked under "About This Mac", selected "more info", and under "hardware" selected "Audio(Built In)". There is no HDMI installed on this laptop. If I need to buy adaptors, that will be ok. I just need to know if it possible to do this with this laptop. Is this possible? Thanks for any help!

I connect my old MacBook to my HDTV often with a "Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI Adapter" (I use Dynex). I connect an HDMI cable to my tv. Connect the other end of the HDMI cable to the Dynex adapter. The other side of the Dynex adapter plugs right into the MacBook's mini Display Port. The picture quality is gorgeous.
For audio: I connect my laptop to small external speakers or to my stereo, the same way I do when I listen to music.
I hope that helps.- Answered by Terry W from South Orange

No, only MacBook Pros April 2010 and later support audio, but if you want to check to know for sure, click the apple logo in the top left corner. Click "About This Mac" and then "More Info...," under Hardware, click "Audio (Built-In)". If you see "HDMI/ DisplayPort Output" your MacBook Pro does support HDMI audio out. If not, your SOL.

What Mini DP to HDMI adapter with audio support can I buy for the previous macbook Model Number A1181?
- Asked by Randy G from Fresh Meadows
- 13/08/2010

Best Answer
You don't. The A1181 (the older Macbook) only had Mini DVI, not Mini Displayport, and as such, does not support audio through the display connector. You can use a standard 3.5mm to stereo RCA cable or an optical TOSLink to minijack cable if optical is an option.

Best Answer
No.
You would need the Lightning Digital AV Adapter that can be bought from Apple for $49 if your tv supports HDMI and you have an HDMI cable.
If your tv doesn't support HDMI, you would want the Lightning VGA Adapter that also costs $49.
If you are willing to spend $100, you can buy Apple TV from Apple which has much more options than just mirroring a display to a tv. My Apple TV is awesome and I have never had any problems with it. It's all wireless to btw. You need to have a Wi-Fi connection, an HDMI cable and supported tv in order to use it.- Answered by Wilmer C from Palm Bay

Can an Intel IMAC 27" (bought in January 2011) send both video & music to a HDTV via this HDMI converter without any other software or HW?
I'm not sure whether this converter, plugged into the mini DP is able to send 'sound' signals through the HDMI connector?
Is it just a question of plugging it into DP port and connect an HDMI cable from this adapter to the HDTV to have both video & sound?- Asked by Pedro N
