You cannot connect an external HD directly to Apple TV unfortunately. For some bizarre reason Apple have chosen not to support the internationally recognized standard known as DLNA to stream video, photos, and music from external peripherals. If you have an iPad or iPhone you can use an app (such as Media Connect) to access DLNA peripherals such as an external HD, and then Airplay it to the AppleTV. This works fine but does of course require an iPad or iPhone to work. Alternatively you have to leave your Mac or PC switched on and running iTunes. This is a missed opportunity by Apple. Numerous other devices similar to Apple TV are avallable which do support DLNA (Roku, WD, etc). If Apple ever make an app store for Apple TV then maybe we will get DLNA but until then it is missing this vital feature.

The BBC iPlayer app works on iPhone or iPad. Those versions are Airplay compatible and can be viewed on Apple TV.
If you are accessing BBC iPlayer on a Mac, then you would be using Safari or another web browser. If your Mac is running OS X Mountain Lion, then you can Airplay your screen to Apple TV.- Answered by Sugith V from Toronto

Yes you can with air play mirroring and it is fun but you will have to still see the camera on the iOS device which makes it a bit complex, cos you cant look at two screens at the same time

Need to display ppt on my ipad to tv but not all offices have wireless networks set up yet so I will get the 30 pin to vga adapter but can I still display ppt presentations either this way or through apple tv when there is a wireless network set up??

No. But many programs from those networks are available by monthly subscriptions from huluplus (recent episodes) or Netflix (older episodes).

Yes. I've been doing so for months. I have a 2TB ext hdd formated in NTFS. All my HD movies are saved there and imported to iTunes. So both Mac and Pc can stream HD content to AppleTV without any problem.

How can I connect my Apple TV 3 to an analog Hifi amplifier (no digital input)?

If you have Mountain Lion, AirPlay will let you mirror your computer screen to your apple TV and thus your TV.
