Since there are two earphones, could two people listen to a movie at the same time (like on an airplane?

Movies are in stereo, like music, you will hear different parts from either earphone.
If you only have one side on, you only hear that side of the scene.
Try it sometime, listen to a song or movie and you will notice in some parts or for some whole songs, vocals and instruments are separated to one more or less.
If you close your eyes, and listen with both on, you can often "see" where each instrument is being played, each instrument's sound has a place relative to another
The previous answer is the correct solution, this explains why. A simple audio splitter is an adapter that plugs into your headphone jack and it has two input jacks for two headsets, that way you both get the movie's full stereo effect.
