Does the AirPort Time Capsule function as an AirPort base station, in addition to wireless storage? Does Airport Extreme have additional features?

I need an AirPort base station, but I am leaning toward the Time Capsules instead of the Extreme. Is the Time Capsule missing any features that are offered with the Extreme.

In reference to the comment, "Users who have tried to use an external hard drive to an airport extreme for the same functionality as the time capsule have been let down and Apple doesn't support having an external hard drive on an airport as a time machine." That is incorrect. Apple removed that restriction. I have been using an external hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme for my Time Machine backup for a couple years.

  • The simple answer is: Time Capsule can do everything a Airport Extreme can do.

But there're two more things that worth noticing:

    1. AirPort Express can stream iTunes music to external speakers via AirPlay, but neither AirPort Extreme nor AirPort Time Capsule can do this.

    2. Both AirPort Time Capsule and Airport Extreme support connecting to a USB hard drive, which means if you connect a hard drive to an Airport Extreme then it will work similar to AirPort Time Capsule.

  • 1 complete AirPort Extreme + 1 onboard shareable hard drive = Time Capsule

The Time Capsule does EVERYTHING the Airport Extreme does, but also offers networked storage.

The Airport Extreme has NO functionality that the Time Capsule is missing.

    The End.

  • I also use two WD external hard drives as backups to my Time Machine. Works flawlessly. Apple Extreme 5th Gen Time Capsule, 2TB. They alternate saves.

  • This question has been misunderstood. The answer is no; the AirPort Extreme offers no exclusive functionality - the AirPort Express does (AirPlay). If you find storage and/or backup capabilities interesting, go with Time Capsule.

  • Yes it does, it offers the same performance as the extreme but with the added benefit of a wireless time machine backup. Users who have tried to use an external hard drive to an airport extreme for the same functionality as the time capsule have been let down and Apple doesn't support having an external hard drive on an airport as a time machine.

  • I believe it does. Here is the statement for the Product info above.

"It’s also a full-featured Wi-Fi base station with the latest 802.11ac technology and simultaneous dual-band support."
