can you close the macbook pro and have the screen still work?

Yes, as long as you have a external keyboard, mouse and your pro is connected to a power source. First connect the monitor to the pro, next close the lid. The screen will go blank, then just wake your pro up with the mouse or pressing a button on a keyboard and the monitor should work.

Yes, you can for a MacBook aluminum unibody, so I bet you can for a MacBook Pro. I keep my MacBook closed nearly all the time it's hooked up to the display. The MacBook's display is off in this configuration. I hook up a keyboard with mouse to one of the display's USB ports, and it's just like having a desktop computer! Very nice.
