Loss of picture quality from DV to iMovie 09, will this software work better?

When I hook up my DV camcorder to my tv I get a good picture.

When I use iMovie 09 to import from my camcorder and then iDVD 09 to burn the dvd and then play the DVD the picture quality loss is significant.

Pls don't tell me this has to do with the camcorder (as so many posts replies do).

Again, hooked up to my TV the DV camcorder (non high def) puts out a good picture.

Its iMovie (or iDVD) that is doing a poor (very lossy) job.

As a user new to the MAC world (coming from windows) this is an unpleasant surprise.

What options do I have to get much better video results and preserve the picture quality that my camcorder has captured???
