1gb is 250 songs. So 2gb would hold around 500 songs or less. It depends on the length of each song and how big the file is.

Brand new today 2GB holds 241 songs, I was told at the John Lewis apple department it would hold about 1000, on here I read 500, seems like someone is overestimating by a lot. Just above me another user of this year states 234 which is close to mine.

It depends on your encoding bit rate and what audio format you use. A typical CD at 128kbit stereo encoding using the MP3 standard will use about 50 mb. Some are a little more, some are a little less (depends on number of tracks and the length of each track). A 60 min CD will use between 50mb - 55mb. Given this, an iPod Shuffle at 2gb will be able to hold between 35 and 40 CDs. If each CD had an average of 13 songs, then the Shuffle will be able to hold between 455 and 520 songs, based on raw calculations without taking into consideration storage media dynamics (simply put, each song will take up slightly more space on the iPod than it's pure physical size) and how much space the iOS on your shuffle uses. If you encode with 160kbit stereo, your iPod will hold less music because each MP3 file will be larger. If you encode at 196kbit stereo, number you can load will be even less. And you will find that if you use a different encoding format, all of these calculations will change.
The nature of the beast is such that you will most likely be able to load between 400 and 450 songs at 128kbit stereo MP3 encoding.
