it really depends on the kid when i was like five i put down on my wish list that i wanted a cell phone. I of course didn't but it was just what all the teenagers wanted for christmas, so i put it down as well. so if you think your kid is ready for one, then go for it i know little kids that have ipads and sometimes they don't even think about them. but there are some kids that use them for things that are usefull so it's up to you
