Does the apple tv need to be exposed in order for the remote to work? Or when using your phone as a remote does the apple tv need to be exposed?
I would like to buy the apple tv but only if I can hide it in the cabinet out of sight and it will still work. My hope is that the iPhone remote app works through wifi so the apple tv sensor does not need to be exposed to receive the signal from the remote.

For the remote controller the Apple TV (ATV) needs to be exposed as it's using IR.
You can install the Remote App on your iPhone or iPad to control the Apple TV.
In this case you don't need the ATV to be exposed as the Remote App is using the WiFi to control the ATV.

No, it does not need to be exposed. It is a Bluetooth wireless connection, not infrared, so it does not need "line of sight" to work.
