esata connection with adapter to firewire 800, is there any speed advantage?
- Asked by AS from Makkah
- 30/11/2009
Answer
Typically there is. I have a g-raid mini that has both firewire 800 and 1 esata connector. I only get 60-70 megabites a second over firewire 800, but over 120 megabites a second over esata. I assume since it is a raid 5 (4drives), (mysetup is a raid 0- 2 drives) this would be even faster! …More

What is the difference between the Promise SmartStor DS4600 4x1TB RAID System and Drobo (or DroboPro)?
- Asked by JG from Pittsburgh
- 21/10/2009
Best Answer
The SmartStor advertises standard RAID technology which while works well, does not have the advantage of DROBOs proprietary raid system. With standard RAID technology it is recommended to have matching drives (size and model). While you can technically mismatch sizes in a standard RAID they will all drop to the size of the smallest drive. For example if you have 2 500 GB drives and 2 1TB drives the RAID will see them as only 4 500 GB drives.
DROBO advertises any size or type of SATA drive and it will shuffle the space. You can also expand storage by replacing one drive at a time with no manual reconfiguration required. This means if you have 4 500 GB drives you can replace 1 of them with a 1TB drive and the unit itself will reconfigure the RAID for you. From experience, this does indeed take a while (many Hours) and you have to do them one drive at a time if you are changing multiple.
