    Beware of the heat issue

    Written by AD from Mississauga

The hub looks nice and the two top ports are very convenient for connecting a camera or a flash drive. All connections seem to be working reliably.

However, the hub runs pretty hot when the computer is on. I was forced to put it on an insulation pad to avoid possible damage to the desk. The heat also transfers to the cables and to the directly connected devices such as iPod Shuffle or flash drives. I don't think this does them much good.

The heat issue ruins an otherwise great product. Basically, I try to use it as little as possible.

Hot, but in more ways than one!

I love having the two top ports - I use one all the time for my jump drive so I don't have to mess with putting it in one of the rear ports. A great feature, plus the hub looks great. However, it runs quite hot! Once I moved it away from my Mini, the fan on the Mini didn't have to run so often to cool itself down. Otherwise, this hub is a very good product that runs perfectly. Great when it works, BUT...

they don't last long. I'm getting ready to order what will be my third one in less than two years. I wouldn't bother except that the ergonomics of the design perfectly meet my requirements, especially the two slots on the top. I haven't found anything else like it. At this point I pretty much view it as a disposable item - like a couple of AA alkaline batteries. Good design, lousy reliability. Would be 5 stars if it lasted longer than six months.

I've had similar problems with other Belkin models, but everyone else's designs are crummy - you usually can only access the ports from the rear of the unit, not good if you use a lot of portable USB accessories (like a USB flash drive, Logic Pro dongle, etc.)

Belkin hub helps end desktop clutter

Contrary to other reviews, I have found my Belkin 7 hub to run very cool, and to function perfectly. The design places most leads to the rear, while providing top access for USB kit you only connect infrequently. 5 stars, in my experience. More

    Don't bother with this hub...

This worked intermittently at best on brand new MacBook Pro. I eventually got sick of it dropping out when transferring files to /from my external hard drives. Don't get me wrong - I am a Belkin fan - but I can't believe they put their name on such a substandard product.

Save your money and buy the cheaper Targus 7 port powered USB hub. It might not match the new MacBook Pro in terms of appearance, but it just WORKS.

I give it one star because it looks pretty cool - that's about it!
