Overview

The 85 Watt MagSafe Power Adapter features a magnetic DC connector that ensures your power cable will disconnect if it experiences undue strain and helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection.

When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector will light; an amber light lets you know that your portable is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC cord is provided with the adapter for maximum cord length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives users an even easier and more compact way to travel.

Designed to be the perfect traveling companion, the adapter has a clever design which allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.

This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on, or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.

Compatible with 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro.

Better, but still not good engineering

    • Written by from Bowie

I thought the magnetic connection would solve the problem with my previous Powerbook cord fraying. It didn't. 18 months, and I'm having to wiggle the cord around to get power. Of course, Apple will sell me another one for $79, when my problem is that $1 worth of wire broke.

Here's an idea: why not make the portion of the cable that attaches to the transformer detachable? Then when the connector frays, as it inevitably will, you could buy a $10 cord instead of paying $79 for the whole power adapter. But I guess that would eliminate a big source of profit for Apple.

Yes for Unibody, No for older MBP's

    • Written by from Whitby

Own Early 2008 MBP and Late 2009 MBP.
Works on the unibody, does not on my early 2008.
The port on the new MacBooks are smaller and more shallow, this charger reflects this change and will not make contact with older ports found on non-unibody.
Buyer beware, save yourself the hassle and find an 'I" MagSafe charger if you have a non-unibody.

    Finally a great charger!

    • Written by from WASHINGTON

I had the old macbook pro (2009) that came with the old charger. I've never had problems with the charger at all other then if I were to use it on my lap then the charger would be disconnected from the computer. With this charger that is no longer the case.

I now have the new macbook pro and it came with the new charger and there isn't anything bad i can say about it so far. If you're looking for a charger that will work with the macbook and macbook pro this is the best choice. Somehow the charger can regulate down the amount of charge it's putting through to the computer so it's able to be used for both models. The overall look of this charger is pretty amazing. Before having a cheap looking white plug going into a all aluminum macbook looked stupid. With the new aluminum magsafe plug it looks a lot better when plugged in.

Overall i think this is a great upgrade for anyone looking for a new charger and for anyone who has had problems with the old model.

    Worst Apple Product Ever.

    • Written by from Pacifica

I love Apple... I love my Pro, but this is one area where functionality has greatly suffered in favor of aesthetic design.

The power cord (as well as the iphone cord) is so flimsy. This is a laptop. It isn't meant to be stationary. It's meant to move. But when you're a frequent traveler, or tote your laptop around with you often, the cord inevitably pulls in random directions when you plug, unplug, untangle, etc., particularly just below the part that you plug in to the computer. So, it doesn't take a lot to wear down the wire jacket. And, of course, the more it wears down, the easier it is for the wires to snap. It isn't worth $79. It isn't even worth $20. It's like those products that you buy and then realize that 70% of the cost was solely for the packaging. I've had my laptop for about 2.5 years and I'm going on my FOURTH power cord. I'm on my eighth iphone cord.

I really wish they'd spend some time on making something functional. I'll happily take a little ugly if it meant I didn't have to keep buying the same parts over and over...

    Very Poor Craftsmanship

    • Written by from STEAMBOAT SPRINGS

I used the power cord that came with my MBP for 2.5 years before the cord stopped working. I bought a new one last summer and it's dead after less than a year. The protective covering around the thinner cord cracked and peeled away around the base. I never wound the cord tightly or abused it in any way - most of the time it stayed plugged in on the floor. For $80 I expect a lot more. Very crummy worksmanship. I guess apple doesn't really care since they don't have much competition and everyone who owns a mac needs a power cord. More

    STOPS WORKING

    • Written by from Aurora

I have had my MacBook Pro 15 inch for almost exactly 2 years now and I have already have TWO of these chargers stop working for no apparent reason. It's not my computer, because other chargers have worked, so it must be this product. They are NOT designed to last. I'm about to buy my THIRD $80 computer charger and am not happy about it. More

Yes you can. It works, fine for mine. Since I have both Mac books. I am only using the 85w. You can use a higher watt to charge a lower watt item. Just you cannot use a lower watt for a higher item. Go read a few and they all agreed. More

The white box is a built in power converter so you should be fine with plugging it in as long as you have the adapter that changes plug types. You can check to see if other things are converters if it has something like Input: 100-240V~1.5A 50-60Hz. This shows that an electric current of 100-240 Volts can power the converter without problem, which Spain's electricity falls in. If you cannot find this on a product (though most electronics made in about the last 5-10 years automatically convert) or if you feel you would rather side with caution you can but a converter, but only leave it plugged it when you need the power because converters burn out quickly from overheating if you leave them plugged in too long. The power (Wattage) requirement of the Macbook Pro is higher (the adapter is rated 85W, while the one for the 13"is rated 60W), so you must use the 85W adapter. These regulated power supplies are able to maintain the voltage (V) constant, while the current (I) is adjusted according to the needs of the equipment being powered. Since P=V x I, if V is kept regulated at 10 Volts, the maximum current supported by the 60W adaptor will be 6 Amps, while the 85W adapter will supply up to 8.5 Amps. So, using the 85W with the 13" does not constitute a problem (on the contrary, the power adapter will run cooler), but if you use the 60W with the Macbook Pro, the current drained from the adaptor will exceed its specs, the adapter will overheat and its life spam will be shortened considerably.
