Overview
The Apple iPod shuffle USB Cable connects your iPod shuffle (3rd generation) to your computer's USB port for syncing and battery charging and to the Apple USB Power Adapter for convenient charging from a wall outlet.
Two cables are included, both with a 3.5 mm jack on one end and a USB connector on the other. The shorter cable is the same length as the USB cable that comes with iPod shuffle. The longer cable is perfect for connecting iPod shuffle to the back of a desktop computer or to a power adapter plugged into a wall outlet.
Compatible with new iPod shuffle (3rd generation).

I think it is the second generation, if its the one thats somewhat square and has the controls built in, my answer should be correct. And for your info, the cable will NOT work with the shuffle you have. …More

Found this on the apple web site: It is not compatible.
"These cables are compatible with the iPod shuffle (3rd generation) only and are required to charge or sync the iPod shuffle (3rd generation). The iPod shuffle Dock, which came with the iPod shuffle (2nd generation), and all third-party chargers sold as compatible with the iPod shuffle (2nd generation) are incompatible with the iPod shuffle (3rd generation) and should not be used." …More- Answered by VP from Vidalia
