VGA Display Adapter
...if you bought a MacBook in 2006 or later, don't buy this adapter.

I've had my iBook for over 3 years. My VGA adapter came with it. Like most people, I don't have the money to go out and buy myself a brand new apple every year or so, so I'm still stuck with my sad little G4. After having it for a year, I tipped over a glass of sweet tea accidentally onto my mac and then it fell 4 feet off a dresser to the floor. After lots of upset and annoyance I realized I had done something to the connection from the computer itself to the screen, and the backlight has permanently died. What's that mean? Well... if I look REALLY hard in the right kind of light I can actually still see what's being projected onto my screen... but since there's no backlight and I don't have $800 to replace my LCD, I have been using the VGA adapter that came with my iBook for over 2 years now. That's right, my laptop is now a desktop. And it works fine. I've never had a problem with my VGA adapter, it works like a charm- and I've moved it everywhere, used it with any monitor you could imagine, LCD displays, etc.
If it didn't come with your computer, buy it.
Oh, and my teaching partner bought a MacBook last year and we tried to hook hers up to the projector but my VGA adapter actually doesn't fit into her port. Apparently in the newer versions of the laptops, Apple changed the port size. Make sure you're buying the one that is most compatible with your computer- if you bought a MacBook in 2006 or later.... don't buy this one. …More658 of 1030 people found this useful

VGA Display Adapter
Read the description folks

I am surprised that some of the people who reviewed this product managed to figure out how to breathe properly. This is especially targeted at "AD" who seems to think it's a crime for Apple to sell different adapters for different machines. READ THE DESCRIPTION! This is NOT for your shiny new Intel-based Macs, this is for those of us who have the older iMacs and eMacs with the mini-VGA port. Guess what? Macs last a LONG TIME and there are some of us out there with 2-year-old or older machines which use adapters like this.
The name of this product is "Apple VGA Display Adapter". Notice that big fat VGA in there? It's there for a reason! If you are so blindly stupid as to buy a VGA adapter for your Mac with a DVI port, you deserve the headache resulting from it.
Now please, "AD" and all the others here who have no freaking clue what DVI even stands for: STOP giving a bad review because you are too idiotic to read properly!

VGA Display Adapter
works perfectly...

...as long as you follow these simple rules:
1) shut down completely your computer _before_ connecting the adapter (sleep mode is _not_ a shutdown).
2) power up the external screen or video projector _after_ connecting the cable and _before_ booting the Mac.
3) shut everything down _before_ disconnecting the adapter.
These will avoid electric shocks on both the video card and the external screen/video projector/whatever you connect. …More601 of 947 people found this useful

I have owned 2 of these items and the end result has been the same. After minimal usage, you get all sorts of weird colours. My experience with 3 sheared Powerbook power bricks has taught me how to arrange Apple cables. I was super gentle with both these adapters, yet the failures occurred. Very bad quality. …More

You cannot use this adapter with your MacBook. If you have a plastic MacBook, you need to get the Mini-DVI adapter. If you have an aluminum MacBook, you need to get the Display Port Adapter. …More
