Thunderbolt is a revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices via one simple port and a cable that carries both DisplayPort and PCI Express data. And it’s standard on every Mac.
PCI Express is the technology that links all the high-performance components in a Mac. And it’s built into Thunderbolt, which means you can get PCI Express speed outside the box.
Thunderbolt gives you up to 10 Gbps in both directions, allowing for super-fast data transfer between peripherals. You also have enough bandwidth to daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices without using a hub or switch.
Thunderbolt also provides double the power of USB 3.0, delivering 10 watts to peripherals for improved performance on the go.

The Thunderbolt Dock shows how cool Thunderbolt can be
I love my new Thunderbolt Dock, I'm finally using Thunderbolt's advantages. I used to have to fiddle about with my Macbook Air, pl I love my new Thunderbolt Dock, I'm finally using Thunderbolt's advantages. I used to have to fiddle about with my Macbook Air, plugging and unplugging monitor, headphones, backup drive and DVD drive. It meant I probably took my Air with me less often. But now I leave all that stuff plugged into my Thunderbolt Dock, and connect it all to my Air with one little cable.
One thing to remember though, is you must be running 10.9.2 for it to work properly. It comes with a utility that enables it to do things like charge an iPad, and recognise the Superdrive, and that requires 10.9.2. Other than that though, it works like a dream.
I think it looks pretty cool too. It certainly cleans up my desktop, with wires now all neat and tidy. …

When I purchased this dock, there was only one review that gave it five stars. I saw that other products had problems with power When I purchased this dock, there was only one review that gave it five stars. I saw that other products had problems with power to USBs, and this unit had high power ports. Also, other products complained about having to eject before shutdown, and the reviews on this product mentioned none of that. I went ahead and purchased the product and it solves all the problems that were mentioned about other products. You have powered USBs (can charge iPad, wireless headphones, etc. from port), you can hook up your wired ethernet no problem (despite a review to the contrary - I am getting a very strong signal through the wire). I am also able to use my headphones through the jack on the front. The solution to one of the reviews is that you to into system preferences and change the sound settings to use the dock for output/sound effects. Works perfectly. I am listening to headphones as I write.
In summary, everything works as it is supposed to. The only complaint that I have is that it should have a firewire 800 input on the back. I still have firewire drives, as that was the best thing going before Thunderbolt and USB 3. I am not getting rid of my drives. The solution is that I have to plug two thunderbolt ports into my computer instead of one. That is also because I am using an older monitor that uses the mini port that's the same size as the Thunderbolt input. Overall, I am very happy, and I give this product 5 stars!!! Hopefully, those other users with problems will read this review and take the time to reconsider their ratings. …

Worked perfectly with the ioSafe drive Fired up both my Apple Cinema Display and my QNIX displays I use at work with no problems. Worked perfectly with the ioSafe drive I have attached for TimeMachine backups as well. No issues! Probably going to buy one for the home too. The finish matches my Mac perfectly. Didn't try the HDMI port yet. …

One of the thunderbolts is needed for connecting to main computer??
I bought this dock because MacBook air only has one thunderbolt. A £180 investment for getting only one extra thunderbolt port (ac I bought this dock because MacBook air only has one thunderbolt. A £180 investment for getting only one extra thunderbolt port (actually, I think this is a complete failure in design of Apple). But the surprise is that one of the thunderbolt ports is needed to connect to the computer. At the end I am again with only one thunderbolt port. Very good joke Apple+elgato. …

This one caught my eye because of its small size. It was very easy to set up, with no real instructions required (plug & play). Day to day use is hassle free. Just plug the Thunderbolt cable into your Mac and all of your screens/USB docks work immediately. The only thing that caught me out was the ethernet cable showing in 'system preferences - network' as not being connected. It was in fact connected but it's included in the 'Thunderbolt Dock' section. I would have no hesitation recommending this dock. …

Quick and Easy Setup
I popped it out of the box and all my USB 3 drives (previously running slow since I have a mac mini with thunderbolt, but without I popped it out of the box and all my USB 3 drives (previously running slow since I have a mac mini with thunderbolt, but without USB 3.0) were immediately recognized and mounted and running 10x faster. Now lightroom works fast like it should.
