G-Technology G-DRIVE PRO with Thunderbolt is an external hard drive designed to deliver maximum speed and performance. With sustained transfer rates now up to 480MB/s and dual Thunderbolt ports, the storage solution is designed for the most demanding applications and can easily support multi-stream workflows in all major formats.
Continuing its tradition of serving creative professionals and prosumers that demand performance, capacity and quality, G-Technology has optimised Thunderbolt technology for this product line.
Thunderbolt is a revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices via one simple port and a cable that carries both DisplayPort and PCI Express data. And it’s standard on every Mac.
PCI Express is the technology that links all the high-performance components in a Mac. And it’s built into Thunderbolt, which means you can get PCI Express speed outside the box.
Thunderbolt gives you up to 10 Gbps in both directions, allowing for super-fast data transfer between peripherals. You also have enough bandwidth to daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices without using a hub or switch.
Thunderbolt also provides double the power of USB 3.0, delivering 10 watts to peripherals for improved performance on the go.

Fast, but issues with the supplied thunderbolt cord.

A couple of days in and I bought this 4TB G Drive Pro drive after a lot of research online, to use editing my video's with FCP X. A couple of days in and I have to admit I love it, very, very fast compared to my older (non thunderbolt) LaCie drive and quieter as well, although it still has a bit of noise when it gets really working.
The device looks great and is not as big as I thought it would be, something good as it can fit into just about any workspace area.
Biggest issue I have had so far was with the supplied thunderbolt cord, which has some issue so my iMac could not find the drive (not the first time I have read about this issue either), but I swapped it with an Apple one and (touch wood) it all works great now.
Would also be good if this drive was machine bootable, maybe thats going to be in the next version?? But till then I will just be turning in on and off manually as needed.
Overall the device is a bit expensive, but for the extra bit of performance and time it saves me daily, it's worth the price. …

ZERO STARS: Drive takes 3 minutes to wake up!
Have tried two different units on 5 different Mac computers, and have same problem on all of them.
The drive will spin down t Have tried two different units on 5 different Mac computers, and have same problem on all of them.
The drive will spin down the disks after roughly 5mins of non-use. When you try to access the disk again, it will take 3 minutes to start up again (sometimes not at all and requires a power cycle) - This is incredibly frustrating to use as each time you want to open or save a file to the external disk, it locks up the Mac for 3 mins (if you're lucky)
G-Technology, the manufacturer, did try to investigate, but gave up after a couple of weeks saying they "can't reproduce" the issue. Shall be returning the drive for a refund. …
