Great for the 18 months it worked
Bought this drive to store photos, not for travel. It sat on my desk.

I was able to pull the photos off before it totally failed, so that's a plus. But a portable drive that wasn't ever tossed into a laptop bag should have lasted a lot longer than 18 months. …

You would not achieve the same 10Gb/ps (1.25 GB/ps) sequential read/write speeds of Absolutely!
You would not achieve the same 10Gb/ps (1.25 GB/ps) sequential read/write speeds of Thunderbolt, but it would definitely work. Just make sure you buy the Thunderbolt to FireWire adaptor, because it will not work the other way around.
But, you can also use the built in USB 2.0/3.0 port that came built-in on your iMac. The data transfer rates will be faster, if your iMac features USB 3.0.

That makes sense. What I do is, I put both on the same drive but I have duplicates, that is I have t That makes sense. What I do is, I put both on the same drive but I have duplicates, that is I have two drives which contain almost the same information: I rotate them, one day I back up to drive A, the next day to drive B.
I also, naturally, keep the drives in separate locations.
