    DANGER!

    • Written by from Los Angeles

Have been a computer user for 20+ years. This release takes me back to the early nineties when you would have to stay awake all night re-building your entire system due to buggy software.
I have never spent so much money for so much misery. ($279 for 2 User Office: 2011 Home and Business Edition - Specifically purchased for Outlook.
Within one day, Outlook crippled my business communication. The Synch Services program does not include Calendar as others have noted, but worse yet, it is very buggy and throws up continual warnings, eventually corrupting the database to the point of requiring a rebuild. This is all without ever achieving a synch with my Address Book. After several rebuilds, Outlook has "lost" all my data. I thought this would not be a problem, as the prior rebuilds were still saved. Unfortunately, the program is so faulted that I spent 4 hours last night attempting recovery from the rebuilds but kept being thwarted by program suites inherent problems (primarily from the SynchServices app that would not shut down, even when unchecked for re-start in it's warning window. Up at 5AM to talk to Microsoft Support. Spent 45 minutes with tech (no script for this one, she and I finally wrestled the program into clarity and were able to retrieve one of the clean rebuilds. They are very aware of the problem and their answer is to not use Synch Services for the time being until they can fix it. I will make double entries in my Outlook and Address Book until then. Amazing that in 2011 being an early adaptor of a program with this much history should be such a nightmare. I suggest to anyone using Entourage/Outlook that they not purchase this particular suite until Microsoft fixes the issue.

    Much improved

    • Written by from Pasadena

Office 2011 is a giant improvement over Office 2008 and brings the office suite in line with Office 2010 for Windows. The biggest gains are for business users, where Outlook is more in line with Windows Outlook (though still not nearly as good), and Excel adds much-needed missing features like data tables, pivot tables, etc., to enable serious Excel users to work effectively.

People who are expecting huge productivity gains or specific Mac features will be disappointed, but those who are looking for a version of Office for Mac that does as much as the version for Windows, you'll be satisfied.

Arabic/Hebrew RTL/BiDi language support is still missing.
The admins at the Office for Mac Facebook page responded to my question regarding Arabic support. Their response was “This is the sort of passion we love to see! And please, please, please…have your friends send requests to this form so your voices are heard“.
This is the Product Suggestions form on Microsoft’s site. Choose “New Product Request” then write your comment. It can be whatever you want, I suggest “We have the right to have Arabic language support in Office for Mac 2011″. Make sure to click the check-box.
