Mac Pro Quad-Core

Thinking about your first Mac?

Answers to some of the most common
PC-to-Mac questions

  • Processor

Get amazing performance from the Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” processor, which features four processor cores on a single chip. Choose the speed you want.

    Learn more

The Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor in the Mac Pro is based on the next-generation Intel Core microarchitecture, also known as Nehalem, and includes the following features:

    • 8MB of fully shared L3 cache per processor, which boosts performance by keeping data and instructions in a fast-access cache that is available to all four processor cores.
    • An integrated memory controller, which allows faster access to data stored in memory by significantly increasing memory bandwidth and reducing memory latency by up to 40%.
    • Turbo Boost, a dynamic performance technology that automatically speeds up the cores in use when other cores aren’t needed.
    • Hyper-Threading technology allows two threads to run simultaneously on each processor core, providing eight virtual cores for increased performance.

Which processor speed is right for you? The more time you spend using processor-intensive applications — such as video processing, image editing, 3D rendering, and others — the more you’ll benefit from a higher-speed processor.

  • Memory

The quad-core Mac Pro supports up to 16GB of 1066MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM memory in four slots. Choose more memory for improved overall system performance.

    Learn more

Because accessing data from memory is much faster than accessing data from the hard drive, the more memory your system has, the faster it can manipulate your data. The result is greater application performance, especially when working with large files and memory-intensive applications such as graphics, audio, video, and scientific applications.

The Mac Pro now uses 1066MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM memory, an advanced memory technology that is not only fast, but also reliable. ECC provides this added layer of reliability by automatically correcting memory errors if they occur.

  • RAID Card

Enhance data protection and storage performance by configuring your system with the Mac Pro RAID Card and multiple hard drives.

    Learn more

The new Mac Pro RAID Card brings data protection with even faster performance to your Mac Pro system — up to 553MB/s of sequential read performance in RAID 0. Ideal for video and creative professionals with demanding storage needs, as well as for use as a workgroup server, the new hardware RAID option supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 0+1, and Enhanced JBOD. It has 512MB of cache and an integrated 72-hour battery for protecting the RAID cache. The card occupies the top PCI Express slot (slot 4) and connects to the four internal drive bays.

With the Mac Pro RAID Card installed, high-performance 15,000-rpm SAS drives may be used. SAS drives are sold separately and available with the Promise 450GB SAS Drive for Mac Pro.

To enable your Mac Pro for hardware RAID, select the Mac Pro RAID Card option and two or more hard drives in bays 1 through 4. Each RAID level has minimum requirements for the number of hard drives:

    RAID Level Drive Requirements Benefit
Enhanced JBOD One to four drives A non-RAID configuration with the ability to migrate to a RAID set at any time
RAID 0 (striping) Two to four hard drives Maximum performance and capacity for the most demanding I/O requirements
RAID 1 (mirroring) Two hard drives Maximum protection for critical data
RAID 5 Three or four hard drives Data protection, high performance, and efficient capacity utilization
RAID 0+1 Four hard drives A mirror of striped drive pairs providing performance and data protection

The Mac Pro RAID Card supports the creation of multiple RAID sets in a system and multiple volumes per RAID set. For optimal disk utilization in a RAID set, all hard drives should be the same size. Your Mac Pro system ships with each hard drive individually configured in the Enhanced JBOD level with Mac OS X installed on the drive in bay 1. Using Apple's RAID Utility software, you can migrate the drives into a RAID set without reinstalling Mac OS X or reformatting the drives, or you can customize your RAID volumes to meet your exact requirements.

Note: The Mac Pro RAID Card occupies one of the available PCI Express expansion slots and supports Mac OS X only.

  • Hard Drive - Bay 1

Your Mac Pro includes four hard drive bays, offering up to 4 terabytes of data storage with high-performance 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s drives. Configure each drive bay separately.

    Learn more

The Mac Pro features a cable-free, direct-attach drive solution that lets you install and remove hard drives with ease. Drives are attached to simple drive carriers that slide neatly into place — no cables or connectors to hassle with. And removing drives is just as easy. This solution is perfect for sharing drives among different workstations at home or in the studio.

    About Serial ATA
In addition to providing up to 4TB of internal storage for your Mac Pro, Serial ATA drives deliver fast read and write performance by spinning at a 7200-rpm rotational speed. To ensure that data is transmitted to the system as quickly as possible, each drive has a dedicated 3Gb/s channel. Perfect for film and video, music, and other drive-intensive operations, multiple Serial ATA drives can be setup in either a RAID 0 or RAID 1 configuration using the software RAID feature built into Mac OS X. For even more data protection and drive I/O performance, add the optional Mac Pro RAID Card.

Note: 1GB = 1 billion bytes; 1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual formatted capacity less.

  • Graphics

Configure your Mac Pro with high-performance PCI Express graphics cards from NVIDIA and AMD. The NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 comes standard and easily handles typical graphics-intensive workloads. Or you can select the ATI Radeon HD 4870 for even more advanced graphics work. Add more than one card to power an array of displays simultaneously for visualization projects and large display walls.
Note: The Mac Pro has four PCI Express expansion slots. If both the Mac Pro RAID Card and Fibre Channel card options are selected, up to two graphics cards can be installed.

    Learn more

All-new, high-performance graphics cards from NVIDIA and AMD deliver the fastest Mac graphics performance ever. A 16-lane, double-wide PCI Express 2.0 graphics slot supports the latest graphics cards for up to 8 GBps of data throughput. And by supplying up to 300 watts of total power to all PCI Express slots, the Mac Pro provides the headroom for high-performance, next-generation graphics cards.

    NVIDIA GeForce GT 120
Perfect for motion graphics, 3D modeling, rendering, or animation, the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 with 512MB of GDDR3 memory comes standard — and provides greater performance than previous Mac Pro standard graphics. The GeForce GT 120 includes both a Mini DisplayPort and a dual-link DVI port. With up to four GeForce GT 120 graphics cards installed, a Mac Pro can support up to eight 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Displays.*

Each graphics card offers built-in dual-display support in two modes. Extended Desktop mode allows you to work on two monitors at once for increased desktop real estate and enhanced productivity. Video mirroring mode is useful when presenting to groups — the same image that you see on your local display also appears on a projector or auxiliary display. Simply attach two monitors and the Mac OS will recognize both displays. Use the Displays system preference to configure your monitors in either extended desktop or video mirroring modes.

You can attach multiple Apple flat panels with DVI connectors to your Mac Pro graphics card, one directly to the Dual-Link DVI port the other via a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter (sold separately). A Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter is also available. If you have an Apple flat panel with an ADC connector, the optional Apple DVI to ADC Adapter is required (sold separately).

Get set up. Get trained. Get going.

For A$129.00 per year, here’s what’s included with your One to One membership:

    Personal Setup

When you buy your Mac, just drop off your old computer — Mac or PC — and we’ll transfer your files, install any new Apple software you’ve purchased, and put it all in the right places.

    Personal Training

Reserve uninterrupted hour-long sessions with a Trainer on a variety of topics. Join small group workshops with other One to One members who share your interests. Or learn at home using your personal One to One web page, which lets you access tutorials, schedule appointments, and explore projects created by other members.

    Personal Projects

If you need a larger block of time with a Trainer to work on a personal project, sign up online and then drop by an Apple Retail Store anytime during a three-hour time slot. Our Trainers will be available to answer questions and help keep your project moving forward.

Every One to One session is hosted by one of our Trainers — experts in all things Apple. They have a comprehensive knowledge of everything a Mac can do, and they’ll be there with you from day one to provide insight and inspiration.
