    A Near-Disaster

    • Written by from San Jose

I bought this external hard drive and relied on it, faithfully backing up my computer often. I had confidence that, should anything happen to my computer, at least I had the data backed up. Not so. Two days ago, I spilled a bit of liquid on my keyboard and had to replace my computer. This is bad enough, but when it came time to transfer the data from my LaCie, I was told that the data would not transfer because the LaCie had been "corrupted"! I brought my old, liquid damaged computer back to the Apple store and prayed that the hard drive was still functional. Thank God, they were able to transfer my data directly from my old hard drive to the new computer. If this had not been the case, I would have lost all my data! I will never use the Lacie product again! I will now use both a G-Drive and a Seagate Slim, backing up my computer routinely on both. Redundancy is key when protecting precious data!

Great portable hard drive with fast transfer speeds

    • Written by

This is a great portable drive. It's well built, and has a nice durable enclosure that holds the USB cord well in place, which makes it perfect to travel with. USB 3 is so much faster (compared to my old USB 2 drives), which I think is just great if you're carrying around anywhere near a terabyte of files. I've been using this drive for more than a year now and I think it's great for anyone looking for an external storage solution that is portable while still offering fast speeds.

    Solid performer

I am using this primarily to back up my MacBook and it's absolutely amazing. It works perfectly with Time Machine and transfers huge chunks of data without a hiccup. Runs like a charm, doesn't get hot, and hasn't disconnected once since I got it. The aluminium casing is lightweight and very solid. I have been carrying it in my laptop bag without a cover for several months now and it doesn't even have a scratch on it.

    Not worth purchasing

    • Written by from Woodbridge

I purchased this device hoping to use it for a long time. Unfortunately not even a year, it is already giving me issues. It no longer mounts to my MBP. I have tried everything. It recognizes on a friends MB Air which I am currently backing up my data to another external HD (not LaCie) which works perfectly fine with my MBP. I contacted LaCie customer service, which I am still under warranty. They sent me a new cable (which the first cable was really loose) and the new cable (much better) but still the same issue - not recognizing it. I've been informed that they will send me a 2nd cable (Y cable) so the device can get more power. The whole point is being able to utilize my other ports for other things if necessary. Its not worth spending your money. Find a company who has high energy of power with their cable so you won't have this issue moving fwd.

    Unreliable Technology

    • Written by from Browntown

This mobile hard drive has been problematic from the start, and now it is no longer recognized by my Mac. I have to purchase a new external hard drive and hope that nothing happens to my laptop in the meantime because I will have to back up everything on the laptop again.. Apple needs to rethink selling this product.

    Don't hesitate to buy this.

At first I read the reviews for this hard drive before buying it. I read that the device crashed immediately and it was extremely loud. Despite all the negative reviews I read I purchased it to see for myself. I'll tell you I am not disappointed at all. I've had this drive for months now and it has gotten the job done. It hasn't crashed once and it's quieter than a butterfly. I recommend buying this drive.

    lost everything

    • Written by from Newcastle

I used this for 8 months and after taking nearly 10000 photos while travelling and using the hard drive for storage the hard drive has failed on me and lost all my data. Absolutely devastated and dying to find a decent data restoring company to see if i can get it all back, however the parts are apparently really rare to find. It was plugged into my computer and working find hen suddenly disappeared. It had failed a few times before where I used the disc utility to verify and repair it but this time it just completely died. I would not use this product again as it is completely unreliable and has cost me a lot of time, money and heartache.

    Glad I purchased this!

I was contemplating the Time Capsule towers, but after reading the reviews for those, I figured I'd go for a simpler solution. I am so glad i did. The disk is easy to set up, does work with Time Capsule, and then tucks away neatly in a drawer. (The disk is much smaller than it appears.)

Failed twice in 7 months of purchasing...

    • Written by from Caernarfon

Bought this in January 2014 and was using it for a good two months constantly with all my photography and music work then the drive decided to fail on me and lost all my data. Had it refurbished quickly and thought that would be the end of my problems but 3 months on after being fixed the motor has gone so lost all my data again for the second time and Lacie won't hold responsibility to recover my data. A really good product while it lasted but very poor build. A product shouldn't go wrong twice in 7 months of owning. Definitely changing to another product.

So far, Happy but with some Buts ...

    • Written by from APOLLO BAY

So far, it works well. Was very easy to connect to Mac with just the use of the accompanied USB 3.0 cable.
Was surprised to receive product in their proper packaging but just in a satchel with no padding whatsoever. Given the rough treatment that posted items receive along the way, I am just glad everything still worked.

    Installation was not so cool.
Registration could not be done (server error via included LaCie Setup Assistant app. Trying to register online later at LaCie site produced "webpage not available".) Both routes to register were attempted multiple times over a few days, but to no avail. Since it says that one has to register the product to activate the 2 Year Warranty - I suppose not being able to register it at all means there is no warranty?

While attempting to install some of the included software (during the LaCie setup process) - server errors also occurred.

I read here in the reviews that Wuala was a bonus as that meant having free online storage. I bought this product in Jul 2014. After multiple server errors, I finally got the Wuala software successfully installed. Only then to find out that they NO LONGER OFFER FREE ONLINE STORAGE - only paid services. So that was a bummer.

As for the LaCie hard drive itself - only a few days old - but so far, so good.

Fast, efficient, quiet and easy to set up

    • Written by from Buchlyvie

The unit is compact - handy if you want to use as a portable device. The set up is easy and allows customisation to suit different needs (i.e. MAC only or MAC and Windows). I set mine up as MAC only to use as a Time Machine back up. The speed of the initial back up and the apparently silent operation are quite impressive. Only a few days into using it, so too early to comment on reliability, but so far I am very happy with the device.

Excellent drive - fast and well-designed

    • Written by

I'm very happy with this drive. The setup was simple. It only took me a couple of minutes. The drive does its job like a champ. I really love the stylish Porsche design and the USB 3.0 interface. It's very fast. I am now considering buying a second one for on-the-go backups and for my media archives..

    A brilliant device

    • Written by

What attracted me to this unit was the brushed aluminum look that goes with my MacBook Pro. What sealed the sale were the rest of the unit's features: the large amount of storage space, the USB 3 interface, the seamless integration with Time Machine, the encryption software, and the energy saving feature. This drive has become an extension of my computer, and it works great.

This drive works fine. There's plenty of space for me to get the data I need to distill it all down and then upload it to the free cloud storage that comes with the unit. The USB3 speeds are great. I like the nice, clean design of the drive and the overall ease of use.

    Great Hard Drive

This is an excellent portable drive for all my photos, music and documents. It's very well built, easy to use. Has solid performance, blazing speed, more than adequate disk space, and a very nice design. I use it with my MacBook Pro and so far it has worked well.

    So far......so good

    • Written by from IRVINE

I'm always apprenehsive about writing reviews on electronic items because a lot items perform great out of the box but a few days later have issue's. I just purchased the P9223 to replace an older LaCie 500GB external hard drive I use for my Time Machine. I really didn't need 1TB but for the price I can't complain & I'll always have enough storage at least for the coming decade!

Anyway, I love how it's bus powered, just plug into a USB port & it's powered! No external power cords! LOVE THAT! And is this thing on??? It's THAT quiet at least compared to my old LaCie. Very tiny footprint compared to my older LaCie as well. Will fit right on top of my Airport Extreme!

If I had to be super picky the only things I don't like is that the power indicator light is on 100% of the time. I actually like the way the older LaCie only showed the light when it was actually backing up then its like it shut off & went dark. And the other items I didn't particularly like was how long it took to encrypt. Initial backup took about 5 hours total but encrypting took 16hrs!!!

But I had all functions available, it ran quietly behind the scenes & there was no sacrifice in speed while encrypting so no big deal.

All in all, so far........so good!

It's great to have that much storage in such a compact pocket hard drive. I really like its design, and the solid feel is very comforting. It works very well. File transfers between my MacBook and this drive are very fast, and there's rarely any noise.

    Works really well so far

    • Written by from Ongar

I have only had it a short while but so far so good. I have transferred all my iPhoto's on to there. My MacBook was full so I used time machine first to get a copy of my photos on a separate drive then used my LaCie to copy the iPhoto library onto. It automatically now goes to that drive. By hitting command and then clicking on iPhoto I can select the drive I want it to open iPhoto on. Works really well streams videos and pictures at top notch speed.
Now my MacBook has lots of space on it. I do have 53000 photos though. Would definitely recommend.

    Just what I needed

    • Written by

I don't have all that much data that's drop-dead sensitive, but there's enough of it to where I'm glad that I can both keep it secure (which I can do with the military grade encryption software that comes on the drive), and keep a backup copy in the cloud, too (on the Wuala storage system, which is encrypted as well).
