Another surprisingly decent product from Lacie

    • Written by from Lynnwood

I'm a chimp for design, and LaCie is always convincing me to give them my money pretty much because of their designs. Going back a decade or more Lacie just keeps attracting me with their designs, and then charming me by being so reliable and consistently good. I've got a larger USB 2 LaCie drive that I've had since 2007 or so and is still running strong. It's a silly gold thing, but it's been a champ, which leads me to this "Porsche" designed little brick. When I say brick I mean brick, this is a rock solid little 1TB drive and it's been traveling with my Laptop for the last year or more without hitch. It's great looking, and thus far stone reliable.

Couple of irritations, The flat design will have it sliding all over whatever work-space you're at and it's not exactly nice to hold. The edges that give it that crisp look are not nice to touch. No the end of the world, but a thing.

So yeah over all just another solid product from Lacie working as advertised from the drop.

So far, Happy but with some Buts ...

So far, it works well. Was very easy to connect to Mac with just the use of the accompanied USB 3.0 cable.
Was surprised to receive product in their proper packaging but just in a satchel with no padding whatsoever. Given the rough treatment that posted items receive along the way, I am just glad everything still worked.

    Installation was not so cool.
Registration could not be done (server error via included LaCie Setup Assistant app. Trying to register online later at LaCie site produced "webpage not available".) Both routes to register were attempted multiple times over a few days, but to no avail. Since it says that one has to register the product to activate the 2 Year Warranty - I suppose not being able to register it at all means there is no warranty?

While attempting to install some of the included software (during the LaCie setup process) - server errors also occurred.

I read here in the reviews that Wuala was a bonus as that meant having free online storage. I bought this product in Jul 2014. After multiple server errors, I finally got the Wuala software successfully installed. Only then to find out that they NO LONGER OFFER FREE ONLINE STORAGE - only paid services. So that was a bummer.

As for the LaCie hard drive itself - only a few days old - but so far, so good.

    Awesome device, But....

Ok, the look and operation of the drive is spot on with my mac book pro look. It's whisper quiet, sleek and low profile. A big must own for portable users from me... Now the con. The device has a Micro B input, and there are no Lightning to Micro USB cables out there. So for us non-USB 3.0 people (Mac Book Pro Lat 2011 for me) I have to either suffer with 2.0 speeds or come up with a lightning to USB adapter that will work for this.

Easy setup, not sure about the design

    • Written by from CAERPHILLY

I bought this as I had had a frustrating experience trying to format a Maxtor One-Touch to operate on my Mac. it was certainly easy to set up and operate. However, this Porsche design may be elegant, but the case is simply an aluminium oblong with sharp corners that are uncomfortable in the hand. Fortunately, i only need it as a desktop external drive, as I dislike the feel of it and wouldn't want to handle it for portable use. I would have preferred to do without the porsche design and save £20 or so. But it does work well and that's its saving grace.

    Great form and function

Picked up this from Apple store today and formatted using LaCie utility software built on hard drive, no sweat. Then set up as Time Machine back up. Did the back up in no time at all. So far so good. No problem. Got funny little rubber feet you have to stick on yourself - that's quite weird. Apart from that all is gooood.
