Sharp corners, worked for less than one year

    • Written by from Corvallis

I should have known that I shouldn't trust any company who would design a device with such sharp corners that it literally pains me to touch it.

I purchased this hard drive about a year ago for Time Machine backups and personal files storage. Last week, I did a Time Machine backup - worked fine, no issues. This week I plug in the drive and it is not reading on my Mac. The drive whirrs and lights up, buzzing away like normal but no response. I've tried different computers, no luck. I am extremely angry at this machine and now I will probably never be able to access my personal files again. Thanks a lot, La Cie.

    A Near-Disaster

    • Written by from San Jose

I bought this external hard drive and relied on it, faithfully backing up my computer often. I had confidence that, should anything happen to my computer, at least I had the data backed up. Not so. Two days ago, I spilled a bit of liquid on my keyboard and had to replace my computer. This is bad enough, but when it came time to transfer the data from my LaCie, I was told that the data would not transfer because the LaCie had been "corrupted"! I brought my old, liquid damaged computer back to the Apple store and prayed that the hard drive was still functional. Thank God, they were able to transfer my data directly from my old hard drive to the new computer. If this had not been the case, I would have lost all my data! I will never use the Lacie product again! I will now use both a G-Drive and a Seagate Slim, backing up my computer routinely on both. Redundancy is key when protecting precious data!

    Unreliable Technology

    • Written by from Browntown

This mobile hard drive has been problematic from the start, and now it is no longer recognized by my Mac. I have to purchase a new external hard drive and hope that nothing happens to my laptop in the meantime because I will have to back up everything on the laptop again.. Apple needs to rethink selling this product.

    lost everything

    • Written by from Newcastle

I used this for 8 months and after taking nearly 10000 photos while travelling and using the hard drive for storage the hard drive has failed on me and lost all my data. Absolutely devastated and dying to find a decent data restoring company to see if i can get it all back, however the parts are apparently really rare to find. It was plugged into my computer and working find hen suddenly disappeared. It had failed a few times before where I used the disc utility to verify and repair it but this time it just completely died. I would not use this product again as it is completely unreliable and has cost me a lot of time, money and heartache.

Failed twice in 7 months of purchasing...

    • Written by from Caernarfon

Bought this in January 2014 and was using it for a good two months constantly with all my photography and music work then the drive decided to fail on me and lost all my data. Had it refurbished quickly and thought that would be the end of my problems but 3 months on after being fixed the motor has gone so lost all my data again for the second time and Lacie won't hold responsibility to recover my data. A really good product while it lasted but very poor build. A product shouldn't go wrong twice in 7 months of owning. Definitely changing to another product.

    Horrible horrible horrible device

    • Written by from Knoxville

From day one this drive never worked with Time Machine. Constant messages about "improper ejection" and not "mounting." Backups failed more than not and every time I logged in I had to plug and unplug and replug. What a horrible, horrible, horrible device.

Does not live up to the standards of the brand

    • Written by from Montreal

Porsche is known for great design, while the design is pretty nifty; the unit is way too loud. This is the backup for my studio. It is the most audible item on my desk. It defeats the purpose of having a noise free computer. LaCie is studio grade quality, but this is just pathetic. I am appalled by this unit. The noise interferes with the mixing process.

This drive is fit for the pit.

    C'mon LaCie, get it together!!

    Looks great; won't last

    • Written by from San Francisco

Bought two of these drives—first one some 15 months ago; the second one a little over a year ago. They have received less than average use during this time. The first drive no longer mounts--tried it on my MBP 17 (early 2011), MBP Retina (spring 2013), and MBAir (fall 2013)--and is no longer recognized by Disk Utility (luckily I do weekly ups of all my external drives). Contacted LaCie support, and they first questioned that anything is wrong with the drive; after some back and forth they offered to replace it with a "refurbished" drive. I would have preferred a new drive, so I declined. The second drive is showing early signs of wear (based on DriveDX report and test), so I'm not holding my breath that this one will last much longer. Using G-Technology drives going forward (which in my office have proven to have better shelf-life than these LaCie drives).

    Avoid LaCie at all costs

    • Written by from seattle

I have had this drive for less than a month and it completely crashed. I bought it to store some photos on my lightroom catalog during a trip to Hawaii. After transferring the data onto the drive, the disk unmounted from my machine and can no longer be found. I've tried plugging it into different computers with no luck. It just makes a beeping noise. I went through all of the customer support steps with LaCie and they told me that I would have to PAY money to have it fixed. Customer support is terrible and the drives are cheap.

Avoid this company at all costs if you care about your data.

Been through 2 LaCie P'9223's in one month!

    • Written by from Bethesda

My first LaCie P'9223 only lasted for seconds before it failed. Within a few hours I was back at the Apple Store to return the drive for another - figuring I just got a lemon. The seond P'9223 lasted about a month before it too suffered a mechanical failure. The drive is now back at LaCie who is trying to recover the data off the drive. They do not cover this in their warranty - and it can cost upwards of $1200 for data recovery. A third LaCie is on its way to me for free from the company (per the warranty), but I will not use it for any data that I can't live without.

    Disappointed...

    • Written by from Etobicoke

Had this hard drive for 4 months before it burnt out and left me hanging. Luckily I had an older hard drive running additional backups or I'd be lost. I also dislike how the cable connection is on the side close to the front of the drive as opposed to the back as you find with most other portable hard drives. This makes it hard to store/stack with other hard drives and you've got a loose cable sticking out the side.

    Did not work

    • Written by from KATOOMBA

Brought this hard drive about a year ago. It worked the first time I plugged it in and then after that it did not work. I would plug it into the usb port and their was a humming sound coming from the hard drive but it was not showing up on my computer. Very disappointed.
