While the movies do have to be associated with an iTunes account, the movie files do not need to be on the same drive as the iTunes account. If you deselect "Copy movies to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library" located in Advanced in iTunes preferences before you add the movies to the library, the files will remain on the external drive and will not be added to the drive that runs iTunes. AppleTV will be able to play those movies through the iTunes account.

Yes, I have one Netgear router and an Airport Extreme and they can both do this. I prefer to uses the Airport Extreme as the primary with my OS X server (authenticating via Radius) as it's more secure and use the Netgear for guests. I also have the Extreme set to 5.8ghz and the Netgear covering 2.4ghz as most Apple products support 5.8ghz.

Your solution depends upon the type of network you're designing.

If you have only one router on your network and it is set to bridge mode, your network (wired or wireless, or both) will be active but will not be open to connecting to your internet access. If the single router is not set to bridge mode, your network will be able to be connected to your internet access.

When your network will contain more than one router, select bridge mode for each of the additional routers if they will be connecting to a router or other network device that is already using DHCP and NAT to provide IP addresses to computers on your network.

You can use any one of the routers to be the DHCP/NAT server as long as the others are setup in bridge mode. You will usually want to choose the router with the greatest serving capacity to be your DHCP/NAT server. An AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule's network is limited to serving up to 50 users, while an AirPort Express is limited to serving up to 10.

What bridge mode really does is to allow additional routers to connect to the network without conflicting with the DHCP/NAT server. Additional routers may extend the network's wireless range and/or enable additional wired connections for clients and devices.

Hello. On my AirPort Extreme Base Station I have a Seagate FreeAgent Desk for Mac. The HDD does turn off when not in use. I hope this helps!

Hello. In order to extend the wireless signal with a non-apple product you will need to setup a Roaming Network. It will only work with a hard wire connection between the Netgear and AirPort Extreme. Please search the apple support pages for:

Yes. Using Airport Utility you can set the Airport Express to Extend an existing wireless network from the "wireless" tab and entering the network name, security type and password.

In the Technical Specs it says "Gigabit Ethernet". This means its theoretical maximum is 1000 Mbit/s.

The Express is plugged into an electrical socket. The Extreme can be mounted on a wall or ceiling. That makes a big difference as to how your Macs can receive the signal. Where they are located makes a big difference in range.

Apple keeps improving the antenna layout on both so one would expect similar signal strength on both. But given that the Extreme has separate receivers and transmitters for B/G and N, it should always do better. The problem being, the Extreme will downshift to the lowest common denominator.. so if you have anyone connecting with a B or G card, that is what it will go to, unless you set it to only accept N. The Extreme can handle both independently. I have an older Extreme that I run only in N, and a second AP running G/B to emulate what it can do.

The newest version of Extreme has even better antenna positioning, which makes for an even better reception. It is the premier Access Point out there right now.

I'd go with an Extreme.
