Can you charge the spare battery without the dock? Perhaps through a mini USB to usb charger?

You can charge the battery withour the doxk as the lead from the dock can disconnect and you will be able to use the lead to plug directly into the mains adapter or a USB port on a computer for charging.

YES it charges through a standard mini USB port. You can go: battery>included cable>computer to charge, or use your own USB cable. It's pretty well designed, you can even go computer>cable>battery>iPhone and charge both without the dock!
