Answer
The Apple Remote Control works using IR signals. As such, for a device to work with it, the device must somehow have or be connected to an IR receiver. iMacs have it (hidden under the apple logo), MacBooks have it (along the front edge) and more relevantly, the Apple Universal Dock has one on the front. This is but an adapter for said dock. It is purely passive and structural. As such, with it alone, your iPhone won’t magically work with the remote. However, if you have a universal dock and buy this, it won’t hinder your use of the remote either.
