After you connect the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter, your iPad automatically opens the Photos app, which lets you choose which photos and videos to import, then organizes them into albums. I just bought the CME x-key to be used with my iPad Air. Using it with the USB adapter (Lightning to I just bought the CME x-key to be used with my iPad Air. Using it with the USB adapter (Lightning to USB Camera Adapter), it works flawlessly with Garage Band on both Mac Pro computer (v.10.6.8) and iPad Air.
I don't see why it wouldn't work with the iPad mini, but I'm not an Apple specialist.
