The Apple Digital AV Adapter routes digital audio to screens that support it. Connect the Apple Digital AV Adapter to your iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, or iPod touch (4th generation) via the 30-pin dock connector and to your HDMI-compatible display using an HDMI cable (sold separately). A second 30-pin connector built into the AV adapter lets you charge and sync your device while it’s connected to your HDMI-compatible display.

Hi Jane,
If you have good wireless internet at home (WIFI connection) your best bet is looking at t he Apple TV.
A little more expensive but will play all your iTunes movies and tv shows wirelessly from the iPad, that way you can have the iPad in your lap, no balancing act required :) …- Answered by Kimberley B from Lisarow

I just bought the adapter today for my iPhone 4S with iOS 6.1.3. Apparently, the AFL and Telstra ha ve blocked the live stream to TVs, rendering the cable useless to the app. All I get when I hook it up is sound without picture. So no, you cannot stream the video to your TV any more. …

It is not designed for the ipad mini. This is the original 30 pin connector that fits the ipad 2, ip hone 4, ipod touch 4th generation, etc. The ipad mni, iphone 5, ipod touch 5th gen and the ipad 3rd gen all have the new 'Lightening Connector'. There is a Digital AV adapter available for the 'Lightening Connector' eleswhere on this site. And, yes, that one does work with the ipad mini.
NOTE: this adapter and the Lightening Connector version allow power to be connected to the apple device while the HDMI is connected. Not all the cheaper 3rd party ones do. …- Answered by Andrew L
